hallo iedereen, I'm Anjo and I live in the netherlands, though this is a project wich is in progress since januari 2009 I wanted to share it here with you.
this is my second 3 series, I don't like anything about volvo in common but the characteristics of a 300 series and driving fun if you maintain a 300 well makes it totally my car.
i'll make a shortened version on this forum, I read along on a few forums but mostly stick to the 300series english (v3m) and dutch (v3c) websites.
well, this is my project car. started of as a 1986 DL special with automatic (cvt) transmission, 1.4 8v engine and 61000km wich I bought on 24-01-2009.
belonged to a granny wich died, car has allways been standing indoors wich is noticable looking at the cars body and chassis; allmost no rust. after a proper full service I converted it from cvt to manual 5 speed and swapped another original engine in all in a day; looking at the plans with the car.
drove it around a little time and enjoyed it, even blew the headgasket of that engine wich was replaced in an afternoons work.
i've bought a refurbished c1j engine wich has been converted for use in a volvo 340 incl some other nice bits (racing clutch/oil cooler etc.) and used internal parts for the original engine of my car and the tubular exhaust manifold/turbo setup
the original engine was torn apart and got the internals of the C1J renault 5GT Turbo engine.
the practically new cylinderbushes, pistons+rings, rods, crank etc were fitted with incl new bearings, the 5GT cylinder head of the c1j was placed wich allready had new valves, swapped the oil pump etc. practically everything that is needed to make it perform as the 5GTT engine but in the stock housing. the original engine makes 70bhp and 110nm wich makes the 300 a smooth ride wich performs pretty good if maintained well, above 140kmh it becomes a different story though.
I started sorting more parts for the car and found these 15"rims, one of a kind and used by a company named Duvedec to pimp a 360 in the eighties. I got them powdercoated in traffic white.
it is somewhere in june/july 2009 at this moment and as a big fan of powdercoating, the new alternator got the same finish:
well, not just the alternator; all engine parts (excluding manifolds) are powdercoated too, the engine block itself is painted though, along with the original volvo parts (brackets, waterpump etc) this was the result of a few weeks work in the evenings:
the car got placed in a shed and was fully stripped and cleaned to see if I could find more rust. on a full stripped car I found 3 places of surface rust; hard as hell this car!!
after stripping it down I transported the engine to the shed with my other 3 series
first I took care of the front suspension, placing red koni's and intraxx 4cm loweringsprings. along with a complete kit of polybushed. put on new brake pads (discs were fine) and new brake hoses
i've sourced a brandnew gearbox for this car and welded the diff with handling the new power and the drift purpose in mind
then came the rear suspension, double leafspring, yellow koni's new drumbrake parts and 6cm lowering blocks
after that it went on the new wheels;
it was time to place the engine in the car and measure up things like the loom and IC pipework, I don't want to spam this thread with too many pictures but here's a short impression of that process;
lots of custom work with only minor mods to the car body, in total I only had to drill 4 holes!!
tig welded throttle cable bracket:
and 3 of these; radiator brackets
with engine practically finished interior went back in;
I allready sourced a mint original leather interior and cleaned/threated it
and I started with dressing the car;
then came first startup, went well apart from a small oil leak wich turned out to be a hole in my weld on the sump, sealed it with liquid gasket and made a new sump wich I replaced a month later.
first testdrive resulted in the first drift in second gear after just driving it barely 50 meters and half throttle; fun! during that drive somehow the return fuel line shifted and blocked resulting in this;
layed it different and the problem was solved
car went back home, ready for finishing touches after the build
one of those mods was a stainless steel exhaust after the downpipe, including a proper damper. I hade a fully open sidepipe wich was loud as hell, neighbourhood and police didn't like that ;D
angle on endtip was tig welded on wrong due to a misjudgement of me resulting in this after a few speedbumps
I placed a vw1 gti lip under the original glt lip giving it a more badass look
refurbed a other carb due to adjusting issues and swapped them over at my work;
then I modified headlights + grille with glossy black accents, and
took off the striping, bump strips, stickers and logo's.
right now i'm writing november 2009 and the dutch Volvo Classic Car Fair was coming up where it was presented at the Dutch Volvo300Club stand;
at the fair the car got loadsss of attention and I was overwelmed with compliments, a proffesional photographer took loads of pics off it:
(that's me with the plastic coffeecup in my hands)
and then we're at the start of january 2010, yesterday i've fitted a pair of sparco 6point harnesses and sparco chrono road seats:
current speclist car:
engine;
refurbished B14.4E GT Turbo converted
1397cc 8v
Garret T2 Turbocharger
tubular manifold with 2,5" steel downpipe
2,5" stainless exhaust + damper
setrab oilcooler
mocal sandwichplate
bailey dumpvalve
pipercross airfilter
featherlite throttle cable
omex rpm limiter + launch control
original 5gtt solex dis repere 931 carb
Renix 209 ignition module (original 5gtt)
custom engine mounts on the front made out of Delrin (rigid mounting) rear original rubber
produces a minimal of 150bhp/180nm atm at 0,8 bar loading pressure, last week I dragged against a audi a6 avant 3.0 tdi quattro, from standstill we went on together up to 150km, that was when he gave up. I saw that that car does 0-100km in 6,2 seconds so that's similar speed to what the 340T does atm.
driveline:
sach paddle clutch
M47R 5spd tranny with welded diff (3,82:1)
suspension front:
powerflex polybush kit
intraxx 4cm lowering springs
koni red shocks
brakes; original volvo 300 in excellent condition (enough stopping power too)
suspension rear:
dual leafspring (custom)
koni yellow shocks
6cm lowering blocks
brakes; original volvo 300 in excellent condition (enough stopping power too)
exterior:
painted bumpers
painted mirrors
15" 7J 10spoke duvedec rims
tires front: bridgestone turanza er300 195/50/15
tires rear: anything that smokes
rid of badges, striping etc.
glt frontspoiler with gti lip
interior
glt clockset
glt roofliner with 2 extra handles
87> interior parts (one of volvo's modification years with the 3 series)
hard plastic floor black buckets
sparco steering wheel
sparco chrono road seats
sparco 6point harnesses
equus boost, oil temp and oil pressure gauges
some of the future plans:
big brake kit conversion for the front incl coilover suspension,
rear back to 1 leafspring, coilover suspension and discbrake conversion
hydraulic handbrake
custom front suspension for more camber and steering lock
custom strut brace
bigger front anti roll bar, adding a anti roll bar to the rear
uprated propshaft
more reliable set of gauges and a rebuild of dash
glt rear spoiler + louvre
electric + heated mirrors
electric windows
complete body restauration + paintjob and hopefully a volvo factory body kit
full kicker audio installation (4x12"woofer, 2x 10" woofer, 4 amps, 20+ speakers) allready have that lying around.
and offcourse more power!
grp a conversion for the carb
hybrid turbocharger
new manifolds/downpipe
uprated cylinderhead
sharper cam + new valves/valve springs
etc.
i'd like to see dyno results of around 200bhp and 250nm with this 1.4 8v engine.
this car is multi purpous, i´m trying to combine my passions in this car such as drifting, audio, show use and speed. a proper allrounder in my eyes but offcourse not ideal for one of those specific genre´s.
more specific info off the build can be found here:

will update this topic too from now! though due to restauration of my new 1980 volvo 343 this topic won't be updated too much for the next few months.
