my car has a mechanical pump at the moment in my volvo 340, and want to convert to electrical, what is the best way don't have a diagram but at the moment its fuel tank, fuel pump, carb, with a return line going to the tank which of the below is the best

Go with diagram 1, the return line is important as it will help prevent from carb flooding. As for an ideal pump, anything thats low pressure should do the job but cant think of anything specific.

I'm using a ZX9R fuel pump on my Micra, it's plumbed like diagram 2 but without the FPR. The ZX9R pump runs low enough pressure to not blow fuel past the float valves (admittedly mine did at first but that was due to the carbs having not been used for god knows how long and the float chambers full of fuel 'varnish' ) High flow/low pressure FTW. Simple 2 wire connection, mine runs off a relay just to be on the safe side. I just blocked the return on mine as the tank is vented anyway. Thats the same pump as my fzr 1000 has think its made by mitsubishi had one in a 1275 mini without a FPR worked fine.
