1. what could i do to my golf to make it faster without putting up my insurance too much? and i don't really want to rip out the rear seats to reduce weight either.
2. if i were to buy a higer insurance group car, what would be a good way to go about insuring it? I'm considering limited milage or certain months of the year
3. what exactly do you have to declare to the insurance companies? so far iv had a new stereo, new wheels and a bageless grille and none have been declared (the car had alloys when i insured it and they never asked what alloys so i guess these still count)

Weber Carb is classed as a direct replacement part....... With no insurance loading ;D Just happens to give quite a bit more power and better economy than the 2E2 Peirburg as well. GTI cam if its a 1.8 carb motor, very difficult to spot ;D You should tell them all mods, just think about how you word it first ;D HTH Dom

a mate of mine recommended that if i get a new exhaust, to ring up and say the old one got knackered so i replaced it with a mates old after market one. are insurance companies that gullible and would it actually make a differenct to how much they up my insurance? surely thats like saying "my golf broke down so my mate gave me his enzo, don't charge me as much as you normally would please"

Insurance companies will try and get out of paying whatever... so if they see summit on your car that you haven't declared, they write you insurance off as null and void.... so the fun start when you make sure you've declared everything without them realizing, as CR500 says, its all in the wording

yeah but even if i got it serviced back to showroom condition it would still be too slow. i may consider putting a new engine in it but I'm not sure if it would bump my insurance up too much. plus this motors pretty reliable and i don't really want to lose that

mrsigma: ok that meant nothing to me but i do have a 1.6 engine and a neighbor who might be able to fit it. how much and what difference would it make to the car? its mainly acceleration that I'm concerned about.
edit: 500th post! today i am a GOD! score!

run it on rocket fuel, sure that would pick the pace up a bit, plus, by the time the insures get to look at it, it'll have all burnt away...win win! ;D

i would suggest a decent suspension and brake upgrade and weght reduction before you mod the engine if insurace is a problem as these will bump it up less than a tuned motor. I don't know golf engines but do the 1600 and 1800 look the same - if so insure it as a 1600. or build another engine and have the 1600 rebored (1275 mini engine can be 1380 or bigger ect) but this all gets a bit expensive and involved.

take the boat off the roof, I'm sure the sail wil be causing a lot of unecessary drag. ;D fit a weber and have it proffesionally tuned, costs around £30. best bit of advice i can give regarding insurance is listen to dom, hes bang on the money, careful how you word stuff.

iv already got -40mm springs waiting to be fitted. would call them a decent suspension upgrade but iv already spent the money and id rather not upgrade again before they're even fitted.
the brakes have already had an upgrade of sorts. before the last mot they were really spongey and it turns out only 2 brakes worked and one of them was dodgy. so now i have 4 working brakes which seems like an upgrade to me since i was used to 2 brakes
edit: but the sail helps me when the wind is behind me.

yeah, easiest way is a dtml carb and make it 'wiv cam', see how much it costs extra on the insurance to run k-jetronic injetion off the gti, i know of at least 1 person who has fitted this toa 1.6 and was overjoyed with the mpg and extra performance from it

its mainly acceleration that I'm concerned about. Then get rid of the 15" wheels and put it on 13" ;D That will improve your acceleration without costing you anything and be insurance freindly don't quite understand this ? But springs are not so much of an upgrade, you would be much better off fitting new Dampers, GSF or ECP will do you Sachs or Bilstein for about £20 a corner ;D Springs just keep it off the floor dampers are the important bits ;D ;D And they cant be seen ;D The important thing to remember with mods is: Take it as read that you WILL crash it...... we all have, more than once The insurance assessor will come and look at it, its his job to not pay you anything.... he works to reduce the insurers payout..... He or she is not your freind ANYTHING that stands out will give him a big stick to beat you with. If you are lucky it will only cost you what you had in the car. Next step up (or down) into the Deep Sh*t scenario is that you have hit someone else and it is your fault Now not only do they not pay out on your car they don't pay out on the car you hit either, so they will sue you (Or more likely your parents) for damages Next...... God forbid you have hurt someone in the accident...... Now their sueing you for a massive personal injury claim as well Are you getting the picture yet ;D ;D Next you have the piece de resistance Because you have not declared all mods, you were not insured, now the police are involved and are prosecuting you for driving without insurance as well, so you get points, fine, maybe a ban or a stretch .... Because you caused an accident with personal injury while driving without insurance Do you know how much S*it you are in already Thats before you try and insure anything next year !!! Think this is a little far fetched...... You would only need to hit someone lightly from behind.... roundabout, you watch person move off and look to your right watching for the gap..... See gap and go......... BANG straight into the back of the stationary car in front that went and then changed his mind Crunched car, whiplash, no insurance, personal injury claim with all their legal and medical costs as well for the next 5 or 10 years...... bye bye house or mortgaged up to the hilt for the rest of your life ......... To pay for a Mk2 golf with lowering springs wheels stereo and save £50 on the insurance...... Not so much of a saving now is it Not a personal thing, but been there and very nearly did it...., freind of mine is still paying for the same thing 20 years later Not worth it dood Your call Cheers Dom

i guess ill declare the grille when i declare the springs (which i was planning on declaring anyway). as for the wheels the car is already declared as having alloys. the way i see it nothings changed since thats as specific as they asked.
i meant to say WOULDNT call it a good upgrade. sorry. i may consider new dampers soon

they look at stuff to see whether its more appealing to thieves too, that's where alloys and aesthetic things come into play

so could people name what mods their cars have and how much it put their insurance up please? plus your age may help me get an idea of how much it will cost me. cheers
plus do you have to declare paint jobs? for example if i sprayed my golf a standard colour ie red then it would surely be no more appealing to criminals. but then if i had it custom sprayed with either bright sparkly colours or graffiti style paint job it would be. where do you/they draw the line? and then could they bump it up if it was still an original colour paintjob? could you call someone out to assess it to make sure it was properly declaired?
