Does anyone know how I would go about making some subtle steel wheel-arch extensions for this: I've got some ideas, but don't want to polute your minds so please come up with original ideas. The original arches are very thin. As they reach the edge they become two pieces spot-welded together. At the top of the arch they are already wide enough. Just as you come down the sides the original arches don't cover the tyres and need to come out about 1 or 2 inches further. I don't want stupid massive plastic arches. Just a subtle steel extension. Another reason why I'd like to know how to do these is to repair the rusty wheel arches on this car and another one that I have in my workshop. Because the edges are spot-welded together the water sits in the gaps between the spot-welds and rusts it all out. Doing this today and over the Christmas break.

From here. Or a set of bolt ons from one of the guys in the parts for sale board. Des wrote a nice peice on extending the arches of a Japanese estate he had, but I've no idea how to find it. There's also Slater's not so subtle guide in the how tos.

Those are probably made by cutting up and flairing out the original arch, does not look good at all in person. I think they're made by cutting out the part that goes in, and hammering and using a pipe between the tire and arch to get them round. Quite common on budget race cars here.
Just using a pipe between the arch and wheel, and a heatgun so the paint doesn't crack gives a much better looking job done.
Edit: sorry, didn't read your post too carefully, and tought that pic was how you wanted them to look. Nice purposeful looking saab tough ;D

In my opinion the problem has not been properly solved when that work was done on the Lexus. Look at this shot. You can see the rear wheels sticking out a long way from the rear bumper. I think it looks awful. My car does not have bumpers. But because it's quite old the steel bodyshell continues right down to all the corners and there is no plastic moulded bumper like you have with modern cars. The little bit of flaring done on that Lexus wouldn't be good enough and not really what I'm trying to achieve. Here's a look at the back: The rear has been lowered about an inch since this photo was taken. I want to build the arches out as they drop down around the wheels. I want the arches to turn into steel mud guards as they get towards the bottom.

I'd be tempted to make what you want in card.. complete around wheel arch etc in right profile to give you the extension you need etc.. cut out whats not needed and weld a steel version in.. either that or cut above and around the current lip pull it out and fill the gap with steel.. kind of like the lexus but instead of cutting and stretching the wing do similar around the arch?

there are a couple of people on here selling good quality universal arches ,jdm and flares , could they be a good starting point ? i had some flares on my saab 99 i'll dig a pic out later, [always LOVED your car by the way]

I'm doing some arch flares for my cf at the mo, its easy to play with the cardboard until you get the right shape, just make sure you make your cuts/edges/curves nice and smooth.

Just decided to have a go at it. It seems to be going well. Welder ran out of gas yesterday so got some new gas and will be getting on-with shortly.
The wheels are Citroen wheels. I didn't think they were aluminum. They rust where the paint has scraped off the rims in one or two places. I invented this modification for Saab 900's and 99's. As far as I know, I was first to do it. The wheels are from a Citroen C5 MKII and were £25.00 each brand new from the Citroen dealer. 16" are bigger than standard as well. The Saab's usually have 15" wheels.
In the event that I just happen to have a pile of cash sitting around for some reason or another, I will buy 8 compomotive-type racing alloy wheels for it. These will be white of course. But cash is in short supply right now and wheels aren't anywhere near top of the list.
