Since the start of last year more and more pictures (and I mean lots!) of this sort of thing have been 'wizzing' round the net. What exactly is this 'scene' of car modifiying/customising out there? At first I thought they must be the equivalent of their 'Barryboys' or perhaps a Mickey take of said loonies, but then I realised all the cars they use are 20+ years old (and also some quite rare and powerful old vehicles at that!) and as we know your average barryboy is not capable of or interested in looking after a 'classic' car. So ideas anybody, just curious (and NO I haven't decided what to make of them yet ;D).

... Meanwhile, the NPA said in a separate report to the commission that the number of bosozuku, or members of Japanese biker gangs known as "speed tribes,"

It's all about just having a laugh... Quite self-depricating and very much a 'I don't care what you think of my slammed-into-the-weeds-j-tin-with-15-degrees-of-negative-camber-and-6-foot-tall-exhaust-stacks motor' thing.

It's just that they've done it to so many 'Classics' (Not that I mind modified classics ). Didn't realise there was so many old cars to go round for them to mess with ;D

From what I can gather, it's kind of DELIBERATELY provocative. Proper Bosozuku bike gangs are quite feared I think, and the cars flout the law in so many ways to try and get attention. Not sure. Like most aspects of Japanese culture, I'll NEVER fully understand

Bosozuku means delinquents or bad boys. It's like the Hells Angels, although it comes across as pretty camp in pictures. You can't imagine cruising through town inspiring fear and loathing in the hearts of the locals if you're behind the wheel of a pink Datsun that looks like someone's glued cardboard panels to it and stuck a bent mop handle into its exhaust. Pictures below. And take note of this link - the complete world of Japanese car customising through a single link. You lucky people! tanetane92.web.infoseek.co.jp/gallery.html

These Boso J customs are ace, those tamer customs above caught my eye especially the datsun. Edit: the yellow one, not sure what the others are, red one a bluebird! My fave has gotta be those exhaust sculptures though!

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

I had this explained to me by a Japanese guy,.. they've been doing these cars since the early 80's, so in fact people making them now are doing them in a retro style! .. They started out as road going copies of the touring cars they run in Japan, a bit like running a rally replica or whatever on the roads over here. However there is something to ammend to that,.. now days they are doing GURACHAN cars. The aim is to have the most conspicuous car, some that really really stands out, it has become a competition between the people that make the cars, it is particularly aimed for New Years day events, to be the most Gurachan car of new year is special. Hopefully below you will see my friends car for this year :

Some do some don't... like modified cars over here... That having been said I've never seen an engine in Japan that isn't running twin or triple webers!

it has a lot to do with yakuza, unlike traditional gangs like the mafia and stuff, being all inconspicuous and trying to blend in, the yakuza dress loud, act loud, and indeed drive loud.

First time I saw them they reminded me of late 70's Japanese plastic kits which always seemed to have a version running crazy camber, big arches and spoilers etc. Looking at a C110 Skyline on my shelf right now like that, quite tame compared to some.
I just assumed it was thirty-somethings putting their childhood playthings into real life?
