would you include your 76 manta then? the manta design is only 4 years older than the polo desi ;)gn, which first hit the streets in 74, albeit badged as an audi 50. maybe you hav ;)e a point about some of the people found on forums though, as some do tend to mince about, rather than get anything done. Lucky for me I can spend all my free time working on my cars and all my work time spamming up the internet I don't have a '76 Manta... the Manta is a '72 and is far more distinctive in it's design than any hatchback could ever be.

I have a Clio 182 as my 'sensible' car and I absolutely love it. They are FANTASTIC to drive!! I assure you, if you drive one, you will love 'em. Evo placed the Trophy (a 182 with trick dampers) in their Top 10 Drivers cars ever - they are that good. I'm not going to say it has been trouble free because that would be tempting fate, but.......... Not retro yet but a great car - save the Chavved up versions which muddy their rep. I have a mate with a V6 and if that doesn't become a sought after retro in time I will eat my plasticky dashboard. Time will tell......

My GF has had 2 of 'em whilst I've been with her the first was an 8 valver and a bit of a yawn but when she traded it in I convinced her she'd be better off with the 16v .... and to be honest was fun to drive. You are probably right about the V6 version... if any of them will be classic in the future.... that will surely be the one. Being the one to do all the fixin' and servicing on both of 'em..... my only whinge would be the rear brakes. Both cars were new and both needed constant attention to them over the time she had them. (7 years) Will please Kris to know that she traded her last Clio in for a '57 Polo

if being a retro is all about graft, then the clio is a great retro! ive got to rewire the engine on my sisters clio and thats only 4 or 5 years old, its obviously far more retro than my 20 year old polo thats done 156k and required very little work to keep it tidy. wish i could say same bout mine!

A good start: Turbo style alloys (like the classic Ronal Turbo's) Some nice comp splitties would work on a Clio Pardon the pedant...... the top and middle ARE Ronal Turbo's. These are known as Phase two as the writing is cast into the face whereas the much revered Phase one's weren't. The bottom pic is Schmidt TH lines. There used to be a clio at Santa Pod, not overly attractive in the conventional sense but the lightening and VW 1.8t in it certainly gave me the hots - and the sound of some the dubbers moaning about it gave me much amusement. ;D

Bringing this back from the dead because I'm interested in a Mk1, namely the 1.4RT. What do I need to know about them? What goes wrong? What bits are likely to give the biggest headaches? Also....pics of 5dr Mk1's if anyone has them

Sorry it's not mk1, but I was surprised this never showed up earlier: Sbarro's cleaned & (glazed) roof-chopped example. Done in '99 & I couldn't forget it. So many small cars NEED that treatment with the trend to tall-boys since the 80's.

Always liked the idea of one of the early pre-face lift Clio Williams. Low and stiff sat over 4X15x8.5 GTA Alpine Turbines with very sticky tires. Would be a total weapon. Have to stop crushing on so many cars

I like the mad Maxi ones and the 16V/ williams don't need much more than a little drop. And thirty racers would be madness! And how about this modification?

I had 16v'er once, fab little car apart from it always undressed itself on the motorway but crazily reliable...people just need to remember that the clio hate comes from boy racers with massive bodykits big exhausts and sun beds underneath...I think thats where most of the bad reputation comes from nice thread though btw

I don't think Mk1 Clios have a chav rep. The later Mk2 facelift ones seem to be the most chavved, nearly as bad as Corsa C's.
The 1.4RT's aren't bad. TBH if it's lasted this long it'll probably be alright just check for rust really.
I'm really tempted to get the Clio done for the gathering to take it up the hill.

In my opinion, no other shell suits the Tamiya FF01 chassis better.
