whats happened to the dyanne? thought that was the daily untill project escort was finished? It was. She ate her own gearbox last week, though. >_< Priorities are now: - get something to get me to work for the long term. - attempt to rebuild the " relatively simple" 2cv gearbox - keep the Dyane for driving in the snow around the countryside - get started on the Escort again ..one step forward, 2 steps back as usual I'd already come to the conclusion I was gonna go for a modern diesel as a daily just a couple days before the gearbox autophagia incident, as I started commuting 22 miles each way to work every day since I got the Dyane, and it seemed a little on fair on the old girl.

Arsebiscuits! I'll see what Mr. Clewer's got lying about, Dyane boxes are externally identical to 2CV ones, but the final drive ratio's slightly higher (numerically lower, higher road speed for given revs). Was it a sudden loss of drive, or did it get you home??

Was it a sudden loss of drive, or did it get you home?? It was a nasty ass noise, followed by refusal to stay in gear without hanging on with one hand. Had to get recovered in the end, sadly. Still moved, but didn't wanna drive the 80 miles I had left while hanging off the gear lever and potentially making it worse. I checked the gearbox mounts, which were fine but then had to call out the recovery folk The guy who recovered me luckily was an ex 2cv importer/specialist. Said he thinks it's the main shaft bearing, but isn't sure. I looked online for a reconditioned 'box but looking at around the £400 mark, which isn't what I need just before Christmas. Sorry mate, thought you knew - had a cry about it on feckbook. Lol.

Once again we have a thread which highlights we have a handful of members here who just don't get the RR spirit. When will these people take the hint? Well I thought I got it,but it seems to be more recently about modern reliable easy to own cars being modified in an 'RR' way (wheels/slam) rather than as quoted in your sig, modified old/classic cars which take some effort to own/keep on the road/find parts for/modify ones to fit that you can't get etc etc. I have nothing against Clio's or any car for that matter, but my comment on this thread relates to seeing pictures of the latest model Clios or whatever with nothing more than slam and rims and now being told you're not getting it for not wanting to see them on a forum about modified old/classic cars. So be nice folks, coz I just don't 'get it' any more. the mk1 clio has been out since the early 90s, so they are getting on for 20 years old, how is it not retro? Just because they arent full of rot, like cars a lot of cars built before 1990, doesnt mean they aren't retro or cool. Modern small hatchbacks, don't look anything like the mk1 clio, which still has a car shape rather than the micro mpv shape, most small hatches have adopted. I agree with you to some extent on not wanting to see the later models though, as they are in no way shape or form retro, but i guess if you don't like it, don't look at them, its not like there isnt pleanty of other interesting stuff on here to look at! I so want a mk1 clio now fitted with the maxi rally bodykit!

Of the 50 threads on the first 2 pages there is this is this thread and...... In fact I can get to page 4 and not find another thread about a modern car... your perception and the reality may be a bit different. I did find this though : retrorides.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=72238 .. which has no replies... one wonders why people would rather reply to a thread complain about the content than trying to bump and promote interesting content they find.

That's cos the guy's with all the real retro's are out there fixing them up with little time spare for postin' ....... whilst the pseudo retro guys have loads more time cos there cars are 'plug 'n' play' by comparison. ;D I did check out Panda's thread at the time.... but it's more a 'go look see' thread than a question/discussion thread IIRC.

Sorry if this offends anyone, but this is what I'd like to do to every Clio in the land. I have exhausted my Clio contributions (but I have posted quite a few) otherwise I'd be finishing this comment with even more Clio pics..... Lets just keep this positive...no room for hate. ;D ;D curse word, forgot about the Clio Maxi! Also sorry for that ^^ pic. Just that my mum owned a Clio and it was nothing but trouble. Anyway, some Google-fu has landed me and this thread with: [img src=" i107.photobucket.com/albums/m292/sabrinahigham23/clio4.jpg"] Penance for the earlier post? ;D

If the whole purpose of driving a retro is having something that you have to work hard to own, and needs constant attention, then i think any clio, regardless of age, should be welcome.
Come to think of it, any renault. Has anyone out there actually owned or heard of anyone who had a reliable one that was built after 1992? I sure haven't!!!
The older ones are more likely to work due to the fact that they didn't have all-singing, all-dancing, self closing, keyless entry, computer-monitored, run-on-flat stereos and all that other gubbins that the french just can't seem to manage!
Bring back the 1.4 carb-fed pushrod with a turbo. in a black renault 9 anyone?

It's not so much 'constant attention'..... it's just that with a 40 year old car there is usually a lot of metal worm, mechanical & electrical issues to resolve before you can even start to consider the less time intensive jobs such as stance... choosing wheels etc. Usually.... these are the jobs most of us look forward to but with the older cars you almost always have to put the graft in first.

Some great examples in here, quite like the squishy lowered Mk2 Van and always had a oft spot for the Mk1 This was in FC mag, I really liked it, just needs a bigger engine now.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

on the wholes, clios are for girls. But if i wasn't so retro minded i could see a 172 being a viable track car.

I wish the above was true lol so far its needed new inner and outer sills, rear valance, rear arches, rear axle mounts and front subframe mounts. Its also needed a engine rebuild, new rear brake calipers, new brake lines, new fuel lines and i've not got on to the electrics, but so far i've got non working electric windows, central locking, cooling fan etc etc. Seriously (to everybody) don't buy a sporty Mk1 Clio if you're not good with cars. I went through 5 gearboxes in 6 months on my old hybrid. Matt

if being a retro is all about graft, then the clio is a great retro! ive got to rewire the engine on my sisters clio and thats only 4 or 5 years old, its obviously far more retro than my 20 year old polo thats done 156k and required very little work to keep it tidy.

Who said "being a retro is all about graft"? ..... The remark that contained the word 'graft' I made earlier was.... as to why the owners of the 'real retro's' don't get time to post so much on here. Was nothing to do with defining what is and what isn't a 'retro'. If you were to get me going on that one we'd need a whole new thread! Having said that.... as you've probably already gathered.... if I were to do a thread regarding what is and what isn't retro..... neither Clio's or Polo's would be included.

Lucky for me i can spend all my free time working on my cars and all my work time spamming up the internet back to the clios
