Haven't seen a trailer for this myself, but it's a new TV programme on BBC or ITV coming up in the New Year. Detective series where the lead character slips back to 1973 and drives a Cortina or something. Sounds worthwhile Be interesting to see what else they come up with. Makers seem to get a bit lazy when it comes to TV and films set after the 60's. Watched 24hr Party People the other day, lots of modern cars in the background of late 70's scenes.

the one that sticks in my mind is withnail and i. set in 1969, when they set out for the country in their beat up mk2 jag they pass loads of mk2 fiestas and mk3 escorts.saying that though they made it on a budget of 67p and a pickled egg. brilliant film.

Funny you say that Nightmare, I remember watching Heart beat, and in one scene they had a car transporter which had a Rubber bumper MGB on it. Humm don't think they did their home work there

You've hit on a pet gripe of mine... When you're out and about, what do you see? Cars of up to, say, 15 years old... in all sorts of conditions and states of cleanliness... so why, if a drama's set in the 1950's, are all the cars imaculate 50's models? Where are all the 'bangers', pre war Morris 8s and Austin 7s held together with string? And why do the characters drive cars miles outside their social status? (which was much more ridgid in the 50s). I caught part of a programme the other day where a 'new' P4 Rover was being used as a taxi... totally wrong, to my eyes... like a new top of the range BMW being used as a minicab now... I feel better now...
|
|
... the only injury I sustained was a bumped head when I let the seatbelt of without realizing the car was upside down and that's not really the car's fault.

I agree with that, I've always thought that was a bit odd too. That cop drama that was on ITV recently, 'Jericho', I think, that was set in the 50s, was quite bad for it, I can understand a high up copper having a pretty new Riley Pathfinder (I think it was a Pathfinder, I can't remember now!), but all the other motors you saw were newish, very tidy motors. My dad always gets steamed up about stuff like this, he'll be watching Heartbeat or some other show set decades back, and an Atki Borderer or Guy Warrior lorry that'd be brand new then comes on, all perfectly restored and totally immaculate, and he'll be shouting that lorries were never as clean as that when he was young, that nobody but the big fleets could afford a motor like that brand new, all the rest of it! ;D ;D The old cars are the same way, and as you say, social stratification was so much clearer back then, before the days of Yes Car Credit making sure everyone can have a Mondeo, even if it's a base spec one that they'll be paying for until after the day they die, back then, if you were a minor tradesman or famrer in a little villiage back then, you weren't driving around in a new Rover or Humber or the like, I mean in the 60s my Grandad was driving around in Austin Heavy 12s that he got at the auctions in Glasgow for a fiver, that were all patched up and would last less than a year before he replaced them for something else at that price, he reckons he didn't get his hands on a Cresta or a Consul until they were years old and had failed an MOT, they certainly didn't bear much relation to the ones you see on Heartbeat.

In fairness to the TV makers, perhaps it's only the owners of shiny classic cars who sign up to the agencies? Perhaps those of us with tatty, standard-ish cars should put them forwards? My Laurel would be perfect for the down-at-heel loser of an old guy - anyone remember something called (I think) The Gaffer - IIRC it was the guy who played Greengrass in Heartbeat, drove a tatty old P6 Rover full of cr*p.

It'd be great if TV shows were more accurate in this way. I guess that people with untidy classics tend to rip them apart and restore them though.

I'd have thought not.... surely there are not many 50's classics just being used for getting from a to B now, they've all been restored, at least to some extent.

The Gaffer was great, white Rover P6 and in the opening sequence he'd get a parking ticket, screw it up and throw it into the back, where the camera would reveal loads of other tickets too
