Just had someone tell me to scrap my Fords because I now own a VW and anything else is sh!t. Why are some people like this?
I have friends with other cars and I would say 50% of them are so anal about everything else being curse word I think it can be very annoying and sad. If its got 4 wheels and I think its cool I don't care what badge it has and where or when it was made. Anyone have any idea's or opinions?

Well, you won't find much of that on RR. Blinkers are to be left at the door! ;D
Blind brand loyalty means you miss out on so much.

My first thought is insecurity.
It's similar to people with small genetalia constantly going on about how big theirs is, and small their friends must be in comparison, when they have no personal experience to prove their point, as they're scared of proving themselves wrong.
Sadly that's the best analogy I could think of.

Yes that makes sense. Mine is fooooking massive ;D Its not like i don't understand maybe people liking VW's and owning just those, what gets my goat is when they tell you to your face that your other cars are rubbish (in my case i know this is not true no matter what i am told). If thats their opinion why cant they either keep it to themselves or maybe try something new instead of slagging off something they have never owned? P.s said person said fords are pants but when i asked what ones he had owned in order to pass judgement he said he had a mk6 escort. So now he thinks he is Jeremy Clarkson and tries to tell me my mk1 escort which i love to bits and have owned 10 years is curse word and should have another ford on its roof ie i should scrap it. Dick. Rant over.

Hate to say this Kris, but it's usually the more hardcore VW owners who spout curse word like that.
I've certainly got preferences, and there's definitely things I don't understand about the car world (such as why anyone would want to use a Pinto engine in anything other than lobbing it in a skip), but I tend to keep such negativity to myself.

Can't stand brandism and try to steer clear of people with that attitude. People like that almost always have no real integrity and switch their elitist views depending whatever they own at the time.

He has 3 VW's Says it all sadly. The VW people I've encountered fall into two camps. The first set love cars and happen to have got into them either through VWs, or have a preference towards them because of family or friends. They love their air and water cooled cars but are equally happy to have something else roll into the car park of a meet they're having. Hence why I went to 3 VW meets in Warrington in the Amazon. They weren't bothered. The second cabal sounds like the one your friend belongs to. They are diehard VW fetishists and won't look at or consider anything else, because it's inferior, obviously. They are marque diehards and will argue with you to the point of distraction that VW are the best maker in the world bar none. The fact that in its 60 odd years of existence VW have never really innovated or set the world on fire with any of their cars or products is lost on them. I find the majority of the dub scene strange and somewhat alienating, like a school clique you were never in on in the first place. There's so much out there to see beyond a row of slammed Golfs or matt black Caddys. That you can see this Kris and have cars that have fierce followings together in your garage shows that you're open minded and that your friend's a bit blinkered. He probably thinks of himself as some outspoken vehicular iconoclast. For the record, there's been a 1967 1200 Beetle in my family since it was three years old. It's maintained and run like an everyday car, and has had two full body restorations. To us it's a survivor but is never fawned or argued over. So there's my two pence.

I've always loved old fords (had my mk1 escort well over 10 years) and have recently got into the VW scene. It does seem that theres alot of animosity towards other makes particularly from within the ford and vw lot, and particularly aimed at each other!! Don't understand it myself as i've been to loads of vw/ford shows and owned plenty of each make, I just like what I like and don't care what badge its got on the boot from a Bentley to a Moskvich, thats what attracts me to the RR forum, diversity! Sod the badge haters I say, its there loss the small minded car racists. Still, thank god i've not got a Vauxhall

Its pretty much the same in the old school ford camp, half the guys wont hear about fords faults and will say anything else is cack, personally i don't car what anyone says about what i'm driving, i chop and change all the time and can find some good in most things i've driven, there are cars and even brands i don't particulally like, either down to the way the cars are designed and built of or my perceived image of the types of owners, i never understood VW's reputation for reliability as you regulally see busted aircooled ones on the side of the motorways on bank holidays and the VW guys will tell you the Fords fall apart but as i spent many years tooling about in crappy old fords from experience i'll say they are pretty reliable and don't really breakdown in a terminal way unless you really ignore them for years.

There's a guy I know with a late model Merc; according to him, everything that isn't a late model Merc is clearly a heap of sh*t and a complete deathtrap of an accident waiting to happen that he'd rather not travel in for fear of breaking down or having a fatal accident. He's clearly deluded, as a late model Merc is hardly the epitome of reliabilty, is it, and he's spent more money maintaining/fixing said late model Merc in the last two years than I have buying and running my TR7 & my Maverick in that time...

I love Mk 1 Escorts. I just don't like Pinto engines. They're very heavy, they have a curse word cylinder head and you have to spend an arm and a leg on them to get decent power. Why anyone bothers with them is a bit beyond me, there's engines in Ford's own stable that are way better. I think it's more the 'I like what I know and I know what I like' mentality that puts me off Pintos. I know of far too many rare and interesting (non Ford) cars that have been butchered by people dropping Pintos into them when 10 minutes of Internet research would have got them the parts they needed . A recent Datsun springs to mind. Plus if you're going to do an engine swap, you want the best possible engine you can, not a boat anchor. Fords have a similarly loyal following to VWs, but from what I've seen, it's more an obsession with making a car run fast and properly that being an extension of your lifestyle. All subjective.

Yeah people unfortunatly think they are the authority on cars just because they watch topgear. Nothing annoys me more than a Clarkson quote when someone tries to justify their opinion. I get a lot of grief from people due to my Metro fetish .. oh and IBTWB

I don't think it's anything exclusive to a particular scenes, I've seen it in every marque/model based community I've joined.
It's one of the main factors I joined here, 99% of users are totally open minded about marques but sadly some have issues with modern cars.
Worst I've every seen though is the Chevy vs Ford vs Dodge 4x4 scene in the states, it's pathetic.

Funny that!..... cos I only wrote yesterday on the 'modern tracked' thread that brand loyalty sucks! As Benzboy said ....... "well you won't find much of that on RR" ....which I believe is probably the most refreshing thing about this site over the others that I've been on so far.

Personally, I am VW through and through. All I've ever owned and probably all I will ever own. However that doesnt stop me appreciating a decent ford, J or Yank motor. Admitedly I do hate most French curse word but decent engineering is always going to impress me, whoever its made by.

I never understood VW's reputation for reliability as you regulally see busted aircooled ones on the side of the motorways on bank holidays Probably because all their owners are tight bastards who never follow the (rather too frequent) servicing schedule VW recommended. Fitting wibblepoo quality pattern parts and parts not even better than standard parts in an attempt for 'performance' pushed by all the major VW parts retailers doesn't help either... I have only owned aircooled VWs, but it doesn't stop me liking other cars just as much. I want my next car to be a Rover P6. But I'll admire almost any classic/retro, whether or not I want to own one It's amusing on the VW forum I frequent most regularly, quite often someone will put a post up saying 'I've just bought this BMW/Ford/etc', followed by several appreciative posts, before someone comes in and says "Oh, but it isn't a VW..."
