You are making me blush........ I found some dirt cheap bump stops! I was browsing the aircooled VW section at the local parts barn and stumbled across these bad boys. Just $8 US so that is what?.....4UKP or something. They are 2 inches shorter than the Fiat pieces that crumbled when I removed them and after slightly enlarging the hole in the mounting tab fit like they were made for the car. I still need a higher spring rate in the rear of this car. I can bottom out the suspension on hard launches and metal on metal means the wheel rate goes to infinity in an instant and that leads to squirrely handling. New springs in the rear are on the agenda. It is kind of difficult to find 2.5"X6" spings in 600 in/lb rates.

That adjustable cam sprocket has come out really well. Couldn't you find a 2.5" x 12" spring with a rate of about 500/525?

What a great little car, I'm wonder if this has answered a question I've been after for ages? Is the same kind of car thats parked behind the one-fifty at the drag strip meet in the film Two Lane Blacktop? It's a small orange with circle back lights and looks far too small compared to the big V8 beasts about.

All this engine building is making me fidget, I don't know whether to run to the garage or read more threads. I forget whose build thread I read it in, but they got permission to use the oven, was that you, or do you use a spare oven, or do you just.... time it, properly? For your adjustable timing gear, you can get these seats that spread the load from the screw over a wider surface area. This one is for a Fiat 131 (big brother!) and it also has six screws. You've got the webs cast for it, why not let the ugly doubt creep in over a few days and then double up? edit:sp

The orange car in TLB is an NSU Many thanks! I've always wondered what it was and what it was doing there. It stands out amongst the beasts!

The doubt about 3 screws has been there since the beginning. I am sure I will machine more slots before it gets torqued down. The best I can do at glamour shots

Fabbed up a new coolant expansion tank out of some scrap stainless sheet That funny contour follows the side of the firewall. Please excuse the filthy, leaky engine bay. Finally I can fill the cooling system without a funnel, 3 feet of flexible hose and complicated yoga positions. Now I just open the engine cover and pop off the cap.

Very pretty. I do love the way you say 'Fabbed up a new coolant expansion tank out of some scrap stainless sheet' as if it was easy

Nothing exciting for this weekends update. I managed to index the cam gear. It is ready to be installed I also finally made myself a few dimple dies. I have been meaning to do this for years. Now that I have them I can not think of a single thing to do with them. I am sure something will present itself that needs the combination of lightening and stiffening. I have to bust ass this week to get the cylinder head done. I took the week after next off to install the new motor and I need it to be ready. I also need to make a new valve spring compressor between now and then.

Hi,
sensational thread.
Question about the tokico calipers, what is the smallest rim which will fit over them, 13", 14", or 15"?
Cheers, John

I know you were working on others but the amount of work you have put in, I would imagine this one is a 'keeper'!!

I sold off the 76 golf and stuck the renault 10 in storage as I am indeed having too much fun with this car. I can't imagine ever parting with it.

According to my memory card I have not taken enough pictures. Just these two show up The valve job is done. The seats have their 3 angles cut and I did a 30 degree back cut on the valves The combustion chambers have been finished and ceramic coated. I sorted through the valve spring retainers and seats and found a set of seats that was a fair bit thicker than the rest I also placed a 1mm shim under each one for even more preload. Pulling the motor in the morning. These is also a radiator leak I have to find and fix before I can focus on breaking the motor in before Cars and coffee on the 25th.

What a week! I doubt one thing went as planned. I took my time and refit the oil sump 7 or 8 times while the motor was still on the stand to ensure I got a good seal and the thing still leaked when I ran it! I bolted the head down with the ARP hardware and torqued it to 70ft/lbs. I had an idea about preloading the pressure plate to provide a bit more clamping so I machined 1mm off the flywheel where the pressure plate mounts All ready to go in That is a light weight longblock. only 112lbs! Went down and had the oil filter lines made up And at this point my camera decided to store images to its internal memory and I don't have a cable for that so no more pics. Anyway......long story short. I got it started up, heat cycled it and noticed a few oil leaks. Fixed them with some leak lock on the external oil line threads All seemed well and good so I took it for a spin and it ran like poo. There was a huge hole where it made no power from 2000rpm to 4500rpm. It also didn't sound right. To be honest it sounded like a modified Subaru STI. That staccato brat brat brat sound that sounds kind of like like a miss, it was also running very hot. It felt like timing and I have had issues in the past where it did something almost exactly similar and I had messed up the EDIS so I assumed it was related. I had relocated the 36-1 crank wheel so I thought that had to be it. Double checked that and it was right. Did the Cam gear slip? Nope still on its mark......perhaps I didn't orient the two pieces correctly when I made it so I swapped it out for a stock one. Still running like curse word. Installed the old timing cover and put the trigger wheel back onto the front of the crank pulley and it was still very wrong. Lesson one.......always check the simple things first, even if you just know what is wrong. After two days of tearing the front of the motor off and putting it back on again over and over I wondered why I hadn't doublechecked the rocker adjustment. Sure enough there were a few that were way off.....like 5mm off. The locking nuts hadn't been tightened enough and they let go. After that it now sounds normal. It will idle for hours and the coolant stays 180 degrees. I am not sure I will reinstall the adjustable cam gear just yet as it is pretty much totally inaccessable in the car. To adjust it would take about an hour. I need to modify the intake to hold another Yamaha injector and get it wired up. Hopefully it will hit the dyno by thursday. Once I can get enough fuel in we will turn up the boost to 16-18psi. Fingers crossed!
