I'm shortly going to need to buy a daily, doing about 40miles a day, and obviously want something retro. Id like a Merc but apparently they're quite thirsty (http://retrorides.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=69033)
SO
Anyone recommend a good retro luxo barge? Needs to be...
30mpg-ish on motorways Automatic Large (i like 'em big lol) 80's COOL Easy to make cooler (rims & slam) Reliable as hell

Yeh, that's why 30 is the aim... as my Cedric does about 18 German or Japanese is preferred really... I have got a lead on a Toyota CROWN but I think that'll still be bad on gas

30mpg may be a little optimistic from a proper barge. But some people consider anythng the size of a Mondeo a barge these days. So.. if you can live with less than 30 mpg on the run, and take a few liberties with what you might define as "retro" I'd point out the LS400 as a fine option for you. Google Celcior VIP and see if I'm wrong....

Get an audi 100 1.8CE 1984 model simple and cheap to maintain, they share a lot of parts with early passat's and golf's the autobox will make it more thirsty and sluggish so I'd consider a manual..

If you're wanting 30mpg then it either needs to be a 4 pot or a diesel. There's not many 4 cylinder barges (other the 123) unless you want to the head to oh so slow world of the BMW 518i .
I think a Merc 124 300D is probably a good shout. I think impala64 (from the 5th gear) is selling his 124 300D that's setup to run on chip fat for around £1000.

I have thought about Lexus... didn't think they'd be anything apart from MEGA thirsty though.. what can you get from them? I have got a lead on a Toyota CROWN but I think that'll still be bad on gas care to share if you are not following it up? The only thing ill say is it's gold with a brown vinyl roof... I might still buy it as a project car

Ford Focus RS Mk1 - hello low MPGs and "wanna race me" at every set of lights... 1973 BMW 2002 - Twin 40's, 284 Cam, Revolutions, E21 Recaros + more Porsche Cayman 987 3.4S - here and due to cost me more money than I have

The Scorp is obviously a 90's car but the engine and box will drop into a mk1 or 2 granny so easy it has to be worth thinking about, just cos its a Ford and they are cheap people ignore them, but they are one of the best mile munchers ever, from anyone, me mate used to take his one on his weekly business trips to scotland despite owning a new range rover and a new 5 series as well at the time, his was the first one i went in.

126... Bought from a very nice chap on here for not a lot. I love it to bits. It says in the book they can do 30mpg on a run but I think that's pure fiction. It's costing me a fortune in petrol compared to my nasty little Polo, but I'm thinking of getting it LPG'd 'cos I'd much rather drive it all the time. If mpg's that important, perhaps a '90s BMW 7-series would be more the ticket? I think they can go further on less.

my '99 Lexus averages 22 mpg with my commute, longer runs (like when I go to Birmingham in it) I get 26 MPG.
But its a proper luxobarge and you can pick them up "from" £699 in the Autotrader

W126 Merc and convert it to LPG, I get 16-18mpg on short runs in my 420SEL (4.2V8 and costs the same as a 32-36mpg car). Had 22mpg on a run on gas once too...

Pro's... 30+mpg RWD Big Bad Cheap as Chips One of the comfiest cars you will ever drive Plenty of auto's out there (4 speed with sports & winter modes) 6-pot 24v lump = 200+bhp Easy for parts and maintenance Crammed full of gadgets and buttons Ultimate sleeper potential Vauxhall badge Cons Vauxhall badge Everyone thinks you're in a Cavalier Rust Supermarket spaces aren't long enough for one Why look elsewhere. There are good ones out there for a grand or less.

You get loads of car for your money with E34s and a 525i should average 30mpg in mixed mode driving. Even nice ones are silly cheap. There was a mag featured Touring for sale on here a month or so back that took a while to sell at £750 and it looked fantastic. I mean, look . . .
