Definitely potential for future classic IMO. This is prompted by the G/F wanting one for when she starts needing to get to placements and also leaving her chauffeur to browse RR while she drives herself to night shifts! Sorry its a bit new, but I really like these thing s never driven one but on styling great, they are RWD i think too the 700cc engine is enough to buzz about town, and all though i'm a bit of a petrol head i'm also a part time environmentalist, sort of LOL and this i recon is all you need if your driving through towns etc and don't have loads of kids, a dog, an over inflated ego or a serious need for speed. oh there also safe too as demonstrated by 5th gear. So are they ok, the gearbox worries me as it semi auto, and is it too new=£ at garage? Also she was looking at new but second hand they are quite reasonable, what would be the prob of a used one... general comments good or bad...

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

oh there also safe too as demonstrated by 5th gear. And understeer like a bastid. (As demonstrated by Top Gear ) I fail to be impressed by Smart Cars. Anything that cannot accomodate 4 people isn't all that smart in my opinion..... but then if you don't NEED to carry 4 people / kids / dogs / pushchairs / MDF from homebase etc etc.......

I think ScrapingScrap's can tell you the BHP required to tip one on it's back Don't know much about the ForTwos... but I do know they have some funky wheels available I guess here I can pick up the thread on me getting a Smart ForFour It's basically a Mitsubishi Colt in a nice frock, but it's cheaper and has the Mercedes Diesel engine from the A-class.

Maybe that's what I dislike. The 'dinki' element.... owned by people who should be doing their bit to further the species... but who are more inclined to fart- about with soft furnishings & stripped-oak floors. Also, their prevalance as vehicles that bring hot food to my house does little to endear. ;D

What I do admire about the Smart is the encouragement to customise them.

reanimation in da house: So are they ok, the gearbox worries me as it semi autoThe Smart is a great car!!! I owned the first Brabus Smart in Sweden, I had it tweaked some more by TuningChip.se and man did it fly, the only problem I had with the car after tweaking it was a ripped drive shaft, it twisted straight off when doing some impromptu street racing, we replaced both with driveshafts from the diesel and after that I had no problem what so ever with the car.... I used to be "El Presidente" of the Swedish Smart Club www.smartfan.nu so I got to drive all the latest news, had the CrossBlade for a week and loved it, was one of the first to drive the Roadster in Sweden, have driven the Four Four and don't really think it's a Smart. My GF who is a huge design-freak would like us to get one but living in the country I don't see the use of such a City Car.... Some cool Smart Pix The new Smart CrossTown, that one's proper Retro...

Love the roadsters a lot but bit expensive for an NHS student/graduate! so a Smarts just the ticket then, she's got the sierra and roof rack for trips to b&q and picking up the folks while i attempt to wheelie the smart what to look for on a used one?

This is far too close to a Fiat Multipla in my eyes Its even the same shade of psychedelic curse word Would only ever use one in town, far too dangerous and slow for the open road

Would only ever use one in town, far too dangerous and slow for the open road Why are they dangerous on the open road? Their crash safety is phenominal! ... Also they can really fly along speed wise, they don't really weigh very much! They often zoom past my wife on the outside lane of the M4...

reamnimation in da house: what to look for on a used one?
Not really anything that's a major problem on the Smart, stay away from the early 99 & 00 cars with the transverse carbon fibre leafspring (same as the Corvette) front suspension, get the one with McPearson struts up front, the leafspring cars are real choppy and can not be lowered like the later. Make sure it's been serviced by Smart Center, then all updates of the software has been done, some bugs in the fly by wire shift & trottle on early software otherwise it's like wit all old cars, check brakes, suspension, motor and turbo and don't be to hung up on colour since all the plastic can be changed in 2 hours and its a simple DIY, plastic is not that expensive. Go ut and get one!!!!

Would have to say you are quite wrong there, I drove mine for some 200km each way to a consultat job every week, it cruised nicely at 130kph and I had it up to 170kph (the 140kph speedlimiter removed) and with 155-55-15 tires on 5.5X15" & 7X15" Brabus rims it felt quite good. The Smart is by NO means a City Car only and it's not dangerous on the open road.....

I stand corrected.
They struck me as being made from spit, tissue and a few bits of glass.
Did they solve that problem whereby the glass-roof panel would shatter on motorways because it wasnt temptered of something like, and couldnt take the vibrations ?

Another Smart "urban legend", hapened to 2 or 3 cars in Holland and I know that certain serialnumbers got the glass changed just in case....
The ultimate thing with the Smart was when living in the city you could always find parking when coming home, remeber one day when I switched cars with a friend at work just go get the chance to drive the R32 Golf, it was a blast untill coming home in the evening, driving around for ½ an hour and ending up parking 5 blocks away, the Smart could be parked diagonally in almost anny space.....
