Retro + moto FTW, if the old faithful is being stubborn jump on the bike and you'll not be late. Cheap win combo ;D.
I think this had been mentioned but what puts me off modern cars is what I could roll for the same ££££££.

I've got a relatively modern (1999) daily and then the qwertina (been off the road 7 months and counting). Had a major mojo fail with the daily the other day when something stupidly tiny went wrong! Its the pressure of it having to be able to get you to work etc. Thats why i'll always love the cortina. It doesn't matter that it doesn't work because its a car i've just got because I like it, not because I need it. Anyone who has a Mk5 cortina windscreen let me know.

know what ya mean dude, I'm in that situation now! If my fiesta don't play ball once the new starter has arived it's gone! Gone infavour of a modern, the saff will be the only oldie then. I think having my modern civic for daily use has helped a hell of a lot, I'm also of the thought now, old cars are pretty much good and fine, it's when i start to modify them things go wrong

Even if I wanted to I couldn't afford to. I'm running 3 classics and one semi-retro (Vectra) all for less monthly cost than a single new car, and that's without counting massive depreciation on the new car.

It's tricky really, having a reliable daily is good from a hassle perspective but a boring car will slowly rob your soul regardless of age or practicality.
For me the ideal blend would a nicely modified low mileage mid/late-nineties daily and then some old and silly for weekends/summer.
It's been said before on here that there seems to be a sweet spot for most manufacturers in the nineties, where they are still modern feeling but built to last and not too techy to maintain.

I do think the golf problem was a one off hassle and the car is the perfect retro daily, easily repaired and cheap to fix. It broke at the worst possible time which is why I threw a girly.
If a new car breaks its messy and expensive. I work on cars all day so I realy should know better.
I sold the E30 due to mojo fail, and I'm so glad i did, everyone told me i would regret it but it was so refreshing to sell it- like i had just had a sh1t infact. So much more time free and spare money,

i miss my Scirocco Epically . . . i drive a 1999 2.5 Subaru Legacy estate now and tho it is the nicest car ive ever owned it just doesnt 'feel' the same. when i was in the Rocco fellow Dubbers would wave, nod and flash, ppl who used to own them would randomly talk to me in carparks and other people who have no ideas about cars would ask what it was.
keep hold of your retro!

Bizarrely, I normally go the other way. When it starts going wrong I start to yearn for something older I'm in the 20's at the moment so we'll see how that one pans out... ok, it's 40's running gear

Yep, I'm a bit like MagnusMcMagusson or what ever he's called. "I've started so I'll finished"! The fleet I'm talking about, what a to do, stuck with welding non skills and general logistics, oh and finance slightly too. However I'm keeping on keeping on. As for a daily, they can be testing, depends what it is and how/how much ya need it. My daily is a bicycle, modified off the peg thing, and the daily is the same, and all though I love the retro/semi modern borderline Mk1 Xantia, the non turbo is tiring me a little. just like the Fiesta never had enough power, winding into redline, yess! So In short I've never had a 'new' car, and every time I came close (rental, replacement) I got bored fast. So recipe seems to work like this, nice decent semi new daily with cool features, mostly just maintained and improved, and one or two toys for fun. Maintaining and fixing em all is a massive never ending task though.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Sometimes I think that too. But then I fix my daily heap with 2 feet of wire and a tieclip,or pull and refit the engine in a weekend and I have to grin. Moderns just aren't that much fun!!

Every time i get tired, is because of my "modern", since it costs me so damn much more both to run and insure Taking money away from my old cars!

To be honest, when it's been 3 years since I ran a retro as my only car and even then I had access to other cars when mine was off the road. If I lost my company car, I think I'd buy another modern. They aren't all "tree loving sacks of sh1t", there is far more to modern cars than Kias and Hyundais. I know exactly what I'd buy, the most awesomest car I've ever owned... Don't get me wrong, I still love my retros but I couldn't put the Merc through the daily hack and I need something that can tow the Mini and get me to the other side of the country in a couple of hours in comfort. I must be getting old

I have tried all the options in one way or another and there is one big thing we all miss, just realised it reading these.
COST.
Yes your retro breaks down so does your daily etc etc.
How much are we willing to spend though. A fairly inspiring moddern car is 3k plus? In my eyes anyway. My latest too cars corrado and lada both around 1989 and corrado doing daily duties with a serios stick hit, the two together taxed and tested cost a grand less than my polo gti which ate 3 gearboxes in 9 months.
What i am saying is. Look at the quality of retro you would buy with the budget you would spend on a modern, more than likely we are into buying some show standard metal? Oh and it will more than likely go up in value as the modern heads towards the 500 quid shed section ;D

I must be getting old The e39's in Sport trim are so very nice. I still prefer it over the E60 as the interiors just so much nicer. An E39 530d Sport is all the car you'll ever need.

Ive been down the expensive moderns route with a porker 968 (when they were newer) M3 evo, Alfas (oh dear), skyline GTR ect.. but have never found anything which ticks all the boxes. You always need a few cars imo.

That's exactly what I bought! 2 1/2 years ago I got a late 2003 e39 530d Sport with most of the toys. Stunningly accomplished car. I'd have another tomorrow, well worth the money.
