good idea.
Some info on period stuff would be good too. There is hardly any info on-line about decent car headunits from the 80's and early 90's.

There did seem to be quite a few spindle mount FM radio cassettes from companies like Pioneer, Clarion & Sharp, which would mount into the stereo aperture of a retro / classic car without the need to cut the dashboard. Especially useful info would be number of channels, and also tech info on how to get a two channel to run 4 speakers properly (I guess this would have to be via an amp?) Brand new, there is also this: which is a proper 4 channel radio unit with all the relevant inputs (including mini jack & USB) / outputs etc. However it's not cheap, so info on other options on how to use / convert an original unit would be fantastic! Great idea, I will be needing such advice this winter so would be mega useful! Thanks, & hope it turns into something useful

Wasn't there a thread recently on a budget spindle mount stereo with usb, and mp3 player input. It was only £30-£40 IIRC

^^^Good choice, 77MP has Burr Brown internals, they sound loverly! I've so far persuaded 3 mates to have one of them in their cars. Really good quality offering from Pioneer

Hey guys, I did a really cool retro ICE install into my '89 GTE the standard system is notoriously bad, the whole car was a bareshell resto' so started designing it, luckily when I bought the car it came with the standard stereo so I took it to my auto-electrician friend got the heads, bulbs, belts etc overhauled refited it with a hiden amp, speakers, wiring, FM transmiter, Ipod and Mp3. it sounds awesome but the system is very light and nothing is on show all you can see is the standard vauxhall stereo. never seen or heard of an install like it in the UK. I'm just about to design the "period" install into my new project a '69 Opel Rekord C Coupe should be fun!

I've always been intrested in making a 'retro' Ice setup surely older ICE sounds better than the new as it isn't digital. don't believe the hype, sound IS very subjective, but in a lot of tests (The Gadget Show springs to mind as the most recent one i've seen) MP3 played through decent pro quaility gear has sounded better than CD or vinyl when the testing is done blind. Also i'd say old ICE is not likely to sound as good as current stuff of the same relative value as technology continues to get cheaper, yes a ten year old £1000 head unit may sound better than a current 100 quid one, but thats not comparing like for like. I have a 150 quid no name unit at the moment (Sonichi) which sounds really good for the money, plus it has a built in DVD player with outputs for extra screens, plays just about every format of music and movies i've tried with it, and it has an SD card slot and a USB socket as well as an MPs player input. For the money you pay you get a LOT of sound these days copmared to yesteryear and not much point putting the best quailty megabucks gear in a noisy old retro unless you run something quiet like my Jag.

I have a working original radio cassette head unit in my car. I wanted to be able to play CD's. I then discovered head unit that accept SD cards, which is neater than plugging a USB stick into the front of your unit. I then saw how some people wire / solder their ipods into the circuit boards of their retro head unit. I can solder but I'm not neat and could easily solder more than I wanted together under a blob of solder rendering my original headunit useless. I then happened upon FM transmitters for your ipod. So am now trying to decide upon the best course of action. Pro and Cons I have come up with are;
PRO's SD head unit means better radio signal reception, RDS so no need to retun as you travel around the country. Allows Traffic Announcements to be listened to easily
iPOD is cheaper
SD Head unit better sound quality / control
CONS's SD head unit more expensive
SD head unit means I lose the use of my glove box
iPOD wires / cables everywhere (could neaten this up behind the dash etc) need to supply some pictures of my dash.
ideally I want to keep my original radio working for shows, and have access to a large "jukebox" of all my music without CD;s rattling around the car interior.

i tried a radio transmitter for a while in my old merc, the sound quality was terrible, but i don't know exactly what was to blame, an FM radio station sounded better on the same stereo.
