What is it with this country at the moment (And I am a Patriot ! It seems if anybody trys to have a little bit of fun then some 'Boffin' from the Ministry of 'pointless affairs' comes up with a 'Ban' ! WHY? P.S. And if they think they will have trouble pushing the rule/regulation through they just say it's because of "Terrorist Threat"

!! one of my mates at work got stopped for having German plates on his Mk2 golf a few months back and told to take them off, I'd just ordered some the day before so I cancelled the order luckly. Personaly I really dislike italic lettering and personal plates that spell names etc so it doesn't bother me to much but the german style is still readerable so whats the problem?

Germany, France, Italy etc. all have their own style of number plates.
We are dictated to that we must have 'european standard' ones.
Germany, France & Italy etc. all share a centralised european currency.
We do not. GO FIGURE!?

Sure, humans can read them, but the Big-Brother cameras don't like them...... I reckon it's all to do with this and this.

What they are saying is that the number plates cannot be read by the Congestion Charge style cameras,.. therefore they have to be changed to standard UK plates otherwise people will just avoid congestion charging by swapping thier plates over.
Why they need to put this in the language of terror I don't know, it seems like a fairly sensible idea on its own.

THing that annoys me really is that they are ALREADY technically illegal for road use, but this will make them illegal to have on your car at a show or whatever, too. Stupid. And what annoys me most is the use of the word "terrorist", because as we all know from history, the IRA would've been stopped in their tracks if they'd had to have their number plates taken off them. I'm trying to find the actual bill, because I suspect that the legislation has deeper and mroe serious implications, as they usually do...

Why they need to put this in the language of terror I don't know Because a nation under the threat of 'terror' is a servile nation who will keep re-electing their 'protectors'. See also 'America'. Do terrorists bowl up in foreign or shonkily registered cars? Or do they just pop down to the local 'Avis' office to pick up a non-descript euro-box??

To be honest this can’t come as a big surprise to anyone, If the german plates are not readable by ANPR cameras etc, surely you must agree they should not be used on the road, regardless of your point of view on speed cameras/congestion charging.
They are bought and sold as ‘show plates’ therefore you can’t really grumble when the coppers do you for using them on the road.
However, using the term ‘anti-terrorism’ in the justification for cracking down on them is rather patronising and offensive, its clearly just for keeping motorists under tighter financial control.

I sometimes drive around with 'show/fun' plates and in my local area (where people all seem to know each other) a couple of coppers have noticed but I am polite and they've not bothered me . If they did ask me then I would do as I am told and remove them; it's no point in arguing, they are only following their orders and at the end of the day I know I'm wrong . However I think what winds up everyone is the 'Terrorist Excuse'

Useless, selfish, bastards.
One thing after another in this country. First its cameras every 400 yards to "check" for tax and mot. Then its black boxes to monitor your driving.
This country has got the whole driving thing seriously screwed.
They need to get their priorities straight.
Speed cameras were a bad enough start.

' The reasoning behind this is anti-terrorism and anti-crime reasons.' In the same way selling fish & chips in newspaper encourages terrorism? It's got sod all to do with terrorism, and that is just tagged on to get public support. Which really really really annoys me.

What i cant figure is the Ban of number plates like the one that was mentioned in your above post. Are the DVLA fecking dumb or something, because the last thing I remember is when you buy a Licence Plate some of that money goes to the DVLA. So thus banning personel ones is a loss of revenue, ok small but its still money.
I can see why they BAN the Use of German ones, and any other nation number plate on a car in this country, just on the ground that the police are fecking thick and don't understand them. As for Fancy lettered number plates, well in my view they are barry plates and you look like a complete NONCE with Them on in the first place.(hopefully nobody has them here lol)
I have black Pressed Steel ones on mine so I guess they will soon try and get rid of these whether you car was registered Pre 72 or not
Just a total waste of time if you ask me and another reason why the goverment want to take away our right to be individual as usual. Just guess if you wnat one your just going to have to move to Germany.

THAT is what is annoying, made all the worse by the "terrorist threat" angle. How is anyone ever going to enforce you to not put German plates on your car in your driveway or on private land (at a show)? They can’t ever police such a rule so no need to worry about that. If folk insist on doing that the coppers can’t stop them, simple as that. Don’t tell me that that is really your gripe though, the issue is that you have forked out £30 for some german plates, you’ve been driving round for a while with them on your car, and now you’re going to have to take them off/run an increased risk of being busted. I think their approach is anal and depressing too, and the ‘terrorism’ justification is totally absurd and offensive in itself, don’t get me wrong about that. But you can’t complain too loudly about the coppers cracking down on these plates getting used on the road, which is only what they’re doing in reality.

Surely you just keep two sets. Use the German ones til you get pulled. Apologise and when the policeman gives you the producer go down to the garage with the UK set on to prove you've changed them, then swap back to the German plates whenever you want. Same for the MOT.
Interesting that they can't be read by the spy cameras though. I reckon that would get you pulled over everytime you drove through the City of London. I don't think it'll prevent the speed cameras though as that's just a photo of the car.
And the new 'ban' is the old law. Plates must conform to a certain standard. Nothing's changed.
