Don’t tell me that that is really your gripe though, the issue is that you have forked out £30 for some german plates, you’ve been driving round for a while with them on your car, and now you’re going to have to take them off/run an increased risk of being busted. Not me - mine were on the car when I bought it, and I've got a spare set of UK plates in the boot, made up without any dealer name on or anything When I finally get it back on the road, I probably WILL put the UK plates on. Not sure yet... I seem to get a lot of hassle at petrol stations and motorway services from people asking "how come your car is german but the wheel is on the wrong side?" and "Excuse me, are you German? Whereabouts are you from?"... I've had at least four or five actual Germans come up to me asking for directions, auf Deutsch also...

This country is going down the pan.
Why do they like making criminals of us drivers and car enthusiasts so much ?

Why do they like making criminals of us drivers and car enthusiasts so much ? I agree with Mr.B on this ,.. people running German plates were already criminals (effectively) ,.. they are just enforcing a law, because now not enforcing it interferes with another law. They can't enforce it for show use as the car is off the road, that would be like clamping and crushing cars in museums because they don't have license plates and tax. I do think the reasoning is way off, if the terrorist thing is what they said and not something dubmeister tacked onto their post.

mine actually look so german, that the police think that the car is german, so i spose if you go all out then youve got more chance of blagging it (touch wood etc etc) ive been running them since ed38 and nothing been said, and thats 30-40 miles a day, ive been followed for like 5 miles by a t5 and although i was thouroughly bricking it nothing happened. ive got a spare pair in the boot tho, but i refuse to take them off just yet. nice to know that in london i don't need to pay congestion charges ;D ;D ;D

Of course it's all to do with congestion charging and speed cameras etc, it's the British government we're talking about, all they want is your cash! And I love (sarcasm you understand! ;D) how the government stops dissent by explaining everything as "to stop terrorists". Yes because the guys at Al Quieda(tm) love nothing more than to drive around in a retro car with german numberplates on their way to cause mass destruction. By explaining it this way, anyone who tries to stand up to them can instantly be branded a terrorist sympathiser, that way they won't have to come up with a rational explanation for what they're doing, just do what GW Bush has been doing for a few years now and say "Anyone who doesn't agree with me is a terrorist and a supporter of the Axis of Evil", just as they've been explaining that we must let them lock people up for ninety days at a time, at a whim and with no evidence, by saying that anyone who doesn't want to surrender their rights is aiding terrorism. I this what's become of British politics? I think I'll move to Venezuala, their president likes commie scum like me! ;D ;D

Balls to them, I live at the other end of the country and will continue to roll with black-and-silvers.
I'm giving serious thought to my mate's offer of a job and place to stay in Mexico.
He has a great time, owns a porsche-transaxle-and-HUGE-V8 can-am-esque kitcar and a manx-style beach buggy amongst other things and gets no bother.

Of course it's all to do with congestion charging and speed cameras etc, it's the British government we're talking about, all they want is your cash! As the transport minister pointed out yesterday the income from speed cameras is pretty minimal in government terms. Congestion charging I'm not so sure about, but I have to say having lived in London for 25 years and then moved away before congestion charging came in I am always pleasently suprised by how easy it is to get around during the day .... of course it's done nothing for the air quality as most of that is diesel particles...

I worry about how much this will begin to affect me even though I'm within the law! My plates aren't show plates - they're Japanese size plates. They're different from the norm because usual plates on Japanese imports are the more square ones with full size letters. Whereas mine are rectangular with motorbike plate size letters - both types are legal on the correct cars. These non-usual plates are illegal on most things that aren't imports. Obviously faked registration there. Now - due to an obscure loophole, despite being an officially UK-sold car I am allowed to have these plates. It's something to do with the car not having EU-type approval and being a V type "low volume import" I believe, not sure on the specifics. However, I see a load of silly UK Puntos/Saxos etc. sporting these non-standard plates (which they're certainly not allowed to do) and expect there to be a crack down on these shortly. When this happens, I expect to be stopped absolutely loads by the more jobsworth coppers, and I'll have to explain to them each time that I can and will have these numberplates. Can't wait!

someone told me that those 'specs' registration-reading speed cameras that they put up at roadworks, cannot read these 'square' plates, they can only read plates where the digits are all in a straight line. Could be true - could be total b@lls.
Anyway your story sounds pretty plausible - if you get a wise-guy copper i'm sure he'll struggle to prove otherwise.

Terrorist reasons??? b*ll*cks. how? i cant see a way they can support that? and to be honest the 'terrorist threat' thing has been too over used and lost its meaning... boy who cried wolf kinda thing. as for the plates, what about black and silver ones? going to ban those so 1000s of classic owners cars become illegal over night? hmm, well hopefull ill have the vote in the next election... and u voted blair into power B0LL0CKS TO BLAIR.

Not true - I looked into this once and it's a bit of an urban myth I'm afraid Same with 'offset' plates like on an Alfa 156... The thing with SPECS is that any that can't automatically be read are checked by a human operator anyway. I do my bit by having the number plate on the Golf angled back, just enough so that at normal head height you can read the plate, but from up above (like an ANPR camera on a motorway bridge or SPECS) you can't see it Took me ages to do, bending the plate back in a car park, and running up two flights of stairs to see out the window if the plate was readable or not It's not like they couldn't read the back plate, or rewind the tape and zoom in when I'm further away or anything, but I like to give them a bit more to do

Oops! What will they think of my [just ordered] Japanese plates!
That said, mine are definitely 'show only', especially as they don't have my actual registration number on them! ;D

I'm after some Japanese plates, can find some dodgy cheap fake ones and also some real used ones but they're not the kind I need. Anyone sees yellow Japanese plates let me know and you'll get err..... my old horn, or maybe a fetching set of blank VHS tape labels?
