This isn't something that has been done directly by me, but I have been very closely involved with this project from right back at the start and have had a major influence over the direction it was headed. I ride BMX and have lived in a quiet little village for the past 18 years (I'm 22 now). There is nothing to ride in the village and whenever we do build something we always get moaned at and the local residents are up in arms about hooligan kids tearing around on bikes. I have sent a few letters to the local parish council years ago (Think I was 13) asking for something to be done, but it always fell on deaf ears. More recently, some of the younger riders also sent a letter into the council and were invited along to a meeting where they put across an excellent presentation. This seemed to do the trick and the council started looking into the possibility of a skatepark. My old dear is on the council and told me about the presentation and that a skatepark working group was being put together. I knew that unless some of us riders got involved we would end up with some curse word metal ramps, so I asked if I could help out. They let me and a few of the lads on the working group and we told the councilors exactly the sort of thing we were after. We gave them the details of some decent skatepark builders and got in touch with them for quotes. Unknown to us, there was £30k put aside by the council years ago for a skatepark, but it never got off the ground. We found some more funding that said they would match what we had already, instant £60k! There were also a couple of other grants that we got too, some another few grand for the cause! We recieved quotes from 3 of the companies we were most interested in and had a meeting to discuss which one to go with. We decided on a company called wheelscape in the end, because they could do the best design for the money we had to spend. We then sent off the final design to our funders for final approval and thats where we are now. Its expected to take two weeks for them to give us the word, then we can give wheelscape the nod to begin building. Hopefully they can start early October. Heres the 3D drawings of what we will hopefully be getting. Most of the hard work has been done now, convincing the council, finding funding, battles with local residents ect so we are just waiting to hear back from the funding source. When they start building, I'll be up there everyday with the camera to update this! Woah, sorry for the major essay! Edd

pretty cool! We (me and a few mates) got involved in this kinda thing With Walsall Council many years ago when we were doing out GCSE's. Went along to an open day, laid out a few designs, spoke to a few folk. Sorted out a skate park. Ironicly we'd all grown up and left for college by the time it got built so to this day (9 years later) i aint set foot on the skate park! Full of chavs anyway of an evening since the local sk8ing craze died out I see your from Dunstable! I'll have to pay it a visit when I'm down the inlaws on my scoots. Looks like a proper one! Ours was just metal tatty ramps. Dan

I had thought that I might loose interest in bmx by the time its built, but I have been riding on and off for most of my life and I always come back to it, so I think its in me for life. Cool, always up for a meet. Message me if your ever down this way. You can come and have a session in the park, lol. Edd

Will do! I'm a little very rusty. It's been many years and i've put on much weight since. I've always fancied BMX'ing. I could never manage the sk8 board hence why i use scoots ;D

Its going to be in Eaton Bray, small village just outside Dumpstable. Yeah, After Dark is far far worse than Ikon ever was and Cubes is being turned into a community church. Great.

Is that a board that you sorta twist your ankles on each half and it propels it? Got one in my garage similar.BTW I'm 56 and can still (gently)ride a skateboard! Started way back when I was about 10 ,after building one .I copied the idea from a MONKEES episode! Thought they were really cool ,don't think anyone had them over here then ,so always got funny looks when riding (or trying to ) ride it! Then moved to another locality in London in about '65 and there were a couple of guys with homemade boards . We all got together ,and terrorised the passers by on any sloped /hilly smooth road we could find .God I feel old!! Sorry to thread jack....!

Small Update on this. WREN, the people that are supplying the funding got back to us. They said yes! ;D We have placed the order with Wheelscape and they started moving equipment in yesterday. This is the area where is going to be built. I'm going to keep a photo diary. Everyday I will take a photo from exactly the same spot, so at the end I will be able to put them all together in a stop motion type filmy thing. They start building today

Heres Thursdays pic: They had scraped back the topsoil and layed the coping out. They had made a start on welding the sections together. Heres todays pic: They have raised the coping up to its finished height and finished welding it all together. They have also started digging down and building up the soil around the edges. The workers have been on it for 3 days and the travellers have already broken into the containers to try and have the mini digger and dumper away! They are now taking the machines back to their depot everyday, which is going to add a week onto the build time!

I'm going out to (some club I've forgotten the name of) in a couple weeks with some friends from my sister lab in Dunstable. I shall have to go have a peek at this. I always wanted a proper bowl and skate park in my local town, but we got MDF ramps from Argos that have since been torn down for (more) houses.
Need new trucks for my board. Unfortunately spending all my money on cars all the time means I've needed new trucks for about 2 years lol.

Cheers for the comments guys. Its in School Lane Rec, in Eaton Bray.
Whyme: Theres another park up the village which is just grass. No-one used to use the grass here anyway. The dog walkers are the only people that use it, and they walk around the edges!
