...I don't think we've ever really talked about these much: Such a sharp-looking motor. X1/9 inspired, undoubtedly. Not too many of them left now (in the UK at least), aren't they powered by the same lump as the Corolla GTI and the AE86? Quite tuneable? Anyone any experience of them? Any pics of tastefully modded ones?

I don't tend to go for these type of wheels, but they're the right era for the car and not too OTT.

There's a VERY cool A/C VW motored one in Japan with matt blue paint but I can't find any pictures on the 'net. I suppose I'll have to scan it in.

Good car. Fairly nippy. Good handling.
Yes they are the 4age engine good power as standard and it is possibly to get 220bhp out of those engines if your wallets big enough. But because toyota/lotus did such a good job it ends up been quite expensive to tune.
Never seen a one that looks any better than a standard one though.
Still lots left, for sale anyway but not that many in regular use.

MR2 MK1 ...the best version ever. Toyota model code AW111 (I think). There are two body versions refered to as A & B, 'A' ran from 1985-ish to 1987ish and 'B' ran from 1988 to 1990. B version has more plastic body trim/body kit. Available with sunroof or T top (which now leaks due to age). Powered by Toyota's superb 4AGE 1600 engine (which as we all know is a Japanese copy on the classic Lotus Twin Cam engine; in fact Lotus did help with development) also used in the 1984 - 87 Corolla GT fwd (AE82), 1983 - 88 Corolla GT rwd (AE86) and 1987 -1992 Corolla GTi (and also used in Corolla 'Truneo coupe' which we never got in UK). Round where I live many MR2 mk1's are still in everyday use, although a little rusty ;D. Which brings us to the main problem of these lovely little machines.....RUST. Infact ALL the 4AGE powered Toyota family (Corolla GT, GTi and MR2 MK1) can suffer bad. With the MR2 all for wheel arches rust/rot terrible due to foam lining on the inner part. Also the body kit can hide terrible nasties. One case I know of in the Toyota Enthusiasts club was a MR2's front end literally braking off from the top of the wheel arches forwards due to corrosion (still driveable as not all suspension points had gone but headlights pods/ front end etc. was lying as a unit on the tarmac !)! The other main problem point is the rear disc brakes ...they need regular maintenance thanks to the handbrake set up on the rear caliper. Seizing rear calipers is a major fault (as it is on the Corolla GT and GTi). Personnally I think the MR2 is a great car and is now the next cheep affordable fun sports car in the same way as MGB GT's, TR7's and Fiat X19's became. Round my neck of the woods an MR2 with about 10 months MOT and in tidy conditon (fillered up arches accepted ;D) goes for about £500 to £800. Buy now before they all rust to oblivion

I have always wanted one since first seeing the 'must-have' matchbox model in '86 or whenever it was. I cant think of a 'good' reason why i never tried to buy one. Damn!

Why has that guy binned off his 4-AGE motor in favour of a turbo’d beetle lump? Yuck.

Why has that guy binned off his 4-AGE motor in favour of a turbo’d beetle lump? Yuck. Mmm... my sentiments too I once drove my mate's MK1 MR2 - my lasting impression was how 'tight' and direct everything felt despite its age (this one was a D reg example) It felt like it would be really chuckable and good fun once you got used to it - I didn't want to push it too hard since it was my friend's car and I'm not familiar with how a mid engined car reacts. Would have liked to have spent a bit more time getting to know it. I loved the very mechanical raw sound of the engine just behind your ear - the variable intake crossover point being especially noticable ;D This car was dark metallic blue with the obligitory fillered-in arches, but looked quite fresh on some 15" rims from a late model JDM Civic. BTW, the same mate is a bit of a fan of quirky sporty 80s Japanese cars having owned a Charade GTTi, MK1 CRX the MR2 and now owns a nice MX5

I'd like to see a white 'Panda'd' like a Trueno by doing the bodykit and lower half black. Maybe a carbon boot lid too.
I also would like to see one with the trim removed as there seems to be a squared off MX5 under there somewhere.
