OK people
Class A - Normally Aspirated up to 1500cc
Highlights
After Adams last run of the day (and end of the event I was able to tell him his last two runs times - both identical at 50.04 secs) His reply was "well I guess that's as fast as it'll go then......"
Lowlights
foggyjames Skoda retiring after the first run with driveshaft failure one of the very few retirements in the day - I'm pretty sure they got it patched up bbut we won't find out if they got home OK till later tonight
Class B - Normally Aspirated up to 3000cc
Highlights
The battle for top positions in a very competative class. I'll play it out as I saw it as best as I can
All morning times set by everyone were falling and it was certainly close at the top (please don't feel offended if you were in this class and haven't got a personal mention in what follows
Trannyman and phoenixescort were on track in several sessions and so very close to each other - it was turning into a good spirited battle however neither broke below the 50 mark before lunch. (sneaking a look at the timing sheets when they could )
Lunch break
Declan's first run (demonstration - timed in the lunch break was 47 secs dead, cold tyres and engine just up to operating temperature) so I knew someone would break into the 40's
Declans following runs were slower but as I've often said to Colon Elk the quickest way round a corner isn't sideways - yeah I know it's fun ;D
Anyway I got a few runs on the bounce at the lunch break and huge thanks to Bill for agreeing to a crash course in how to work the timing gear - after each run he told me the time and I said once I did a run that was slower than the previous that was it for me. It wasn't as nice as being in a group and getting a real buzz from everyone but it was as quick as the old bus would go.
Lunch break over
A lovely MG Midget (s2000 engine I think) turned up having been built recently and just 150 miles since being put on the road and had two ragged runs (first one was 3 laps due to a wrong turn) 79 secs for 3 laps sheesh then he started to get it all together and did a final run of 49.29 first car under 50 secs I caught up with John after the session (track stopped for the awards) and told him his times (he wasn't planning on doing any more runs but asked him not to reveal to anyone)
Reason for this was I didn't want any of the top runners to do anything silly on their last runs that came next we'd had a safe day with just a couple of breakdowns and only one car damaged to see either of the cars damaged on the last session would have ruined the day for myself as well as the car owner
Both phoenixescort and trannyman were struggling with traction off the line all day but on the last runs of the day
phoenixescort finally broke into the 40's with a 49.39 (deliberately coming in way too hot and losing it between the finishing beams to gain that last fraction of a second - brave pills working well ;D
However not quite enough as trannyman on the run before had finally got a decent launch with some small chirps as he left the line and you could see he was much quicker by the first corner, rest of the laps were as smooth as previous ones but final time was a 48.56
Haynes unfortunately couldn't allow us to use the timing display board and so all the spectators on the bank had no idea of the drama being played out in that final session (or throughout the day) - it was truely epic
Lowlight was also a highlight in a way
The Sierra that nosed the armco at the bottom of the circuit - I was very sorry to see it happen but he patched it up and had his 2nd and 3rd runs - I caught him after and turns out he was going after the show to collect a wholem load of front end parts he'd bought so nothing that couldn't be fixed and he was really OK with it.
Class C - Normally Aspirated over 3000cc
Highlights
What can I say variety is the spice of life
A stock corvette does it's first run and then refuses to play any more finally it starts and it's owner pulls a 51.86 out of the box and then calls it a day (I offered him the chance to run again to make up for his missed run)
Bryn on a lowered Lpg only Rover 80 (landie) who was convinced he would be dead last - running round with apparently smoke coing from everywhere and it wasn't wheelspin - turned out a dry powder fire extinguisher worked loose and hey ho contents made a bid for freedom
Nightmares cortinarunning smoking around on spacesavers (wadda yer mean they weren't ;D) Also note the times for nightmares runs if they come up with a motosport event based on a time trial competed with the wheels spinning we have a world champion
That beautifull Healey who incidently is also placed 2 for the time for a three lap run He got quicker every time who knows how much quick that car would go round.
Bryn - You can take away "Second in class" as well as "fastest forum member in class" (glad I lured you in with my track delights ;D)
Lowlights
The orange capri - sounded awesome (as do all V8's) and promised so much but apparently having a lot of problems with smoke escaping form the wires - and with it goes the electrickery
Group D next
Class D - Forced induction under 1500cc
Highlights
Seeing James take the imp out - A car thread I've followed since I first joined RR - Obviously it made sense for him to go first as he helped to get the track laid out and make it all work and it had absolutely nothing to do with him running totally unsilenced (after all if Haynes were gonna bring out a db meter it wouldn't be till after his run ;D
Lowlights
none although it does make me wonder where all the pocket rocket turbo cars have gone - MG metro turbos haven't seen one for years
Class E - Forced Induction over 1500cc
Could be alternatively titled "the GTVSavior and Olbus car share pool"
Highlights
That poor poor 300ZX every time it tried to get out of another run water leaks were patched or push starts from other drivers and away it went again. Bill and I were both almost convinced that at one stage in order toi stop the water leaks they had drained it all!!!!
Other moments like when Oldbus arrives at the start with the T-bar tops missing and his safety helmet above the roof level were comedy gems.
Peaches was chased most of the day by a nice fella who wanted to run his modern saab 2.3T in this class and I had no problem with it - peaches last quip to him was "if you get beat we can all say ha ha" ;D Ooops he did get beat Old skool rules
No lowlights here it seems despite repeated attempts the 300ZX couldn't be broken
