Okay Keith and I have been discussing this and bounced a few ideas around the place, we'd like your input too.
The Aim : Stop people driving their cars in the campsite after dark/when drunk.
How can we achieve this? : We have a number of options
1) Big old sign post as you drive in with a speed limit and a warning not to drive after 10pm (Pros : It is easy to do and treats people like adults, Cons : People forget things....)
2) A car park area as you come into the camp site there can be an area where you can park your car which we can rope off at a certain time. (Pros : Easy to sort out, simple to follow. Cons : People may want to sleep next to their cars for various reasons)
3) Collect peoples car keys, give them a numbered ticket in return and they can collect them in the morning. (Pros : Absolutely great at limiting movement. Cons : Extra work and a bit heavy handed.)
4) Slash the tyres of anyone found moving around the campsite after 10pm (Pros : Works a treat, Cons : Police involvement).
We'd like to hear your thoughts on this, it is our only big worry from our previous experience of doing these shows. The majority of people are great so we don't want to penalise them or treat them badly. However every year we've done this we've had at least one if not more people driving like an idiot through the campsite after dark (most likely a bit drunk). One poor decision and it'll be through someones tent and we've got a whole lot more to worry about than a car show.
So.... thoughts? Reactions? Ideas??

collecting keys is a good idea however most will only have small tents so may need to get stuff out of the car for some reason.
number 2 is a bad idea for the reasons stated.
its difficult really, maybe a warning if this does happen they will be kicked out the campsite and not allowed in the show?

I'm a definite fan of having my car and tent next to each other, but I'm also a fan of not being run over while I'm sleeping. I reckon option one is the best, relying on people to follow the rules and knowing the reasons for it. I won't be drinking (alcohol) at any point over the weekend so you can count on me helping to police that rule assuming I see post 10pm driving and am awake at the time.  |

You could split the campsite up , a quite family area and a get drunk area , people driving around a campsite would be dodgy and an outright ban after say 10 or 11 pm would be reasonable for safety and stopping serious law suits , put a one way system in place , helps at our nationals

Options 1 and 4 together I think is the best way.
I want to sleep next to my car, and I may need to get in and out of it at some point so 2 and 3 won't really work.
Anyone got access to a police stinger? failing that a roll of carpet and some nails (TG style)

Option 1 is the best to be honest.
I like to camp near my car for the fact I keep stuff in it over night, also I would not hand my keys to anyone as what stops that box or whatever getting nicked no matter how say you think it maybe.
TBH do like most car venues, if your caught driving after 10pm your gone escort them to the gate then ring the coppers if they appempt to drive drunk.

Hmm, it's a tough one. Personally, my car doubles as a storage cupboard / cool box when camping, so I don't really fancy having no access to it of an evening.
I think splitting the camp into "family" and "party" sections might aid other camping issues like noise, but I'm pretty sure that people in the "party" section (like me) would not wish to be run over just as much as anyone else.
I think Option 1 is best, with the penalty of being barred from the show if found braking the rules. Maybe a flyer dished out to everyone entering the site, as well as a big sign? (Just a cheap photocopied thing...)

I wouldnt want to hand my keys in, it also leaves u wide open for things like "Well it was in my car when i handed the keys in" type things with satnavs, phones, laptops etc etc etc.
As for drunks, or even those just over the limit driving around is hard to police during the day, How many poeple the next morning will move their cars from the camp to the stands will still be over the limit? If they've had a good night the night before good chance a lot will be!
Lastly what will the AM limit be? No drivng after xxpm but before ??am ? I was hoping to sneek out saturday night to go to racenight in Cheddar but that finishes late so either A) i don't go to racenight, or B) I find somewhere else for the night.

Suggestion No.1 has to be a must (from an organisers point of view) but as you quite rightly say not all people can be treated as adults otherwise we wouldn´t be having this discussion. I personally like BC´s bucket idea, however i think more important is that everyone knows that as soon as they step out of line words will be had On a pure personal note and this has nothing to do with the forum or Hotwire or the Gathering team (of which i am not a member) and I don´t care what people think ... ..if i catch anyone doing donuts anywhere near my family & friends on the camping site then i will personally make sure they won´t be able to do it again.... that is not a threat or a promise just a friendly warning from someone who has seen these antics go wrong! |

It's a toughie, but I think you have to rely on a, people being adult enough not to drink/drive (which as OB says is not always a reliable method) and b, that the rest of us are adult enough to step in and point out the error of their ways if they can't abide by rule a^^ I think a ban on the forum would work for members, and a ban from the show there and then and for the future for non members is also an option. Happy to help police it as I don't really drink that much anymore! though I'm only little |

I have my family with me and wont be drinking, i also have a range rover to defend my pitch with and bearing in mind the weather if you upset me you may find yourself the only car left stuck in a muddy field when everyone else has been towed out. I think option 1 is the only really feasable one but it maye be a good idea to put all us family campers in one place, we can circle the wagons around us then and keep all you injuns on the outside.  |

Option 1 works for me too. Can always move on to confiscating keys/extreme violence if someone does ignore the rules. Mrs S is prepared to join the lynch mob, if OB wants to start a rolling list Some notes about fire/bbq safety might not go amiss either  |

We're all adults. Make sure people know that driving (At all) once you've had a drink is frowned upon and it will be enough - Warn people that they WILL be booted out, and unable to drive home and generally have their evening ruined.
I, and I'm sure a lot of people want to keep their car keys on them at all times. I would be very unhappy to have to be babysat by handing them over, and I intend to camp next to my car, so I'll be in and out of it for stuff (beer!) quite often.
Option 1 is the best by far IMHO, with scaryoldcortina providing the violence where required.
