Anyone building Raleigh Twentys/Shopper bikes?

I am in New Zealand and picked up some Denims. A Raleigh Denim and a Morrison Denim. Boith are made by Morrison Industries in New Zealanbd due to a Government decree that imported bicycles had to have local imput of about 45 % or thereabouts.

I also have a 2 speed R 'Twenty' with swan motif chainwheel. Entering that in the Raleigh tweenty Races at Oamaru, Otago, NZ in November 2010. First prize mens over $450.00. Just search it for contact and entry details.

I have some R 20 wrecks . a 77 ornage 3 speed and similar blue model. A gold 2 speed with concentric ring chainwheel [ has swaged seat post tube and head neck has subtle swaging too..unusual? Not as extreme as an eska but deteactable by eye and pleasing too. The orange and gold one don't have all the wheels but I am finding them gradually.

Will try to get pics shortly. My 2 speed is on flicker under searching raleigh_20_gold + Octagon'and I had a 3 speed green ice one and it is found by searching 'Raleigh 20 + North Ground Dunedin'.

I prefer the 2 speeds all around as the 3 speed are too dependent on cables and the gearing does not alsways suit and having to flick the lever manually is n iot the same as a more naturaly inclined coaster brake action to shift up or down..and it works rain hail and shine which we have had a lot of lately here ( :

Alec, it would be quite easy if you can get access to a mill with a rotary table (sometimes it's a dividing head). You can just mount it up in the chuck, turn the handle the right number of degrees round and drill, rinse and repeat x 36.

I would say that doubling the number of spokes will be quite easy because you can just drill equally in between the existing holes. Going to a number that's not a multiple of the existing number of spokes will give you problems though, because you're going to hit existing holes unless you get very clever with a protractor. Alternatively, if there's enough meat on the hub you might be able to drill a new ring of holes on a dfferent diameter. You can get spokes in all sorts of lengths so that side of things shouldn't be a problem.

;DI got another length of the shiny red outer casing. Also got a couple of 2 metre long inner brake wires, from ebay.
So yesterday I set to assembling the white bike. I filed the holes in the frame for the cables a bit. As these red cables have a clear plastic coating on them. So a bit thicker than black or white cables. I used the long wheel nut and gear rod thing, from my SA dyno hub. I'll have to build that hub into a wheel sometime.
I taped up the bars with Raleigh bar tape. Its kind of rubbish. not padded and really dificult to wrap. No wonder it was still in the shop after all these years.
Its a nice day today. So took the bike along the seafront

Thats the bars. Dia compe bar end brake levers. With the trigger shifter mounted on the stem. I'm wanting that plastic tunnel guide thing that goes under the bar tape on racers. I don't know what its called.

Was it Muddy Fox who had an Advert back in the 80s of a bike standing on the river. Well my white bike can stand up by itself.
I had picked up a rock to put under the sidestand. but didnt need it. Still had it in my jacket pocket when I got home. I thought it was a funny looking rock. I managed to bend it with my fingers. Big lump of tar.

I'm thinking of getting red tyres. Will fit a computer. Was planning on fitting it to the top tube, like a Vektar. But that would be too far away to see the numbers

Does the pictures show? It showed on my home PC. But not on the Libraries PC. Do I have to spend another 2 hours trying to get a good enough signal on my rubbish O2 mobile internet plug. So I can upload them onto here.

Is there a reliable, fast, easy to use photo website?
I'm sick of Photobucket. It just take so long to not get to my page. Flickr is slightly better. But its got a limit to how many pics there can be. And I cant get it to work on my laptop.

That bike looks really good.

My laptop that Ive only had a few months wont start windows. I had installed Nortons 360 on it last week. It didnt see any viruses or problems. So will see what the shop says.

I fitted a Kellogs computer. Its a big white lump that looks like an Ipod. Its got thin numbers. You have to start the speedo. And it wont show the time when displaying the speed. Kind of rubbish. Also. It says I'm not going 50mph. I was sure I was belting along. :/

thats the style of shopper I was wanting when I got my white bike. They had a Hawk, thats similar. But it had Shimano hub. Was wanting a Sturmey Archer

a 68 dated RSW and a 77 dated TWENTY.. both with dynamo hubs... ;D

Rode the rsw a couple of times today but the three speed cable snapped. Whipped it off the twenty and its ready to go again atm but as the lights arnt wired up I don't fancy gettin pulled by the plod in the dark....

Ive been in the huff with white bike. A new set of BMX brakes. But can hardly stop. :/

I did some adjustments. removed a pad then adjusted the cables. Made them closer to the rims when pad squeezed back in. I angled the bars back a bit. As steering was very twitchy.

was out on thursday to Broughty Ferry. A town 5 miles away. flew along the bike path. Seen 15mph on computer. Got there in about 40 minutes. had stopped for a few pics. Will have my laptop back on monday. So hopefully get some photos on here.
I was sitting on the bike in a car park space. Behind me, a wide pavement for people to cross the main shopping street. I heard the woman of a middle aged couple say to him. We should get bikes like that. Then she walked right in front of me. Even tho I was ready to go on the road. And she should have been on the wide pavement instead of the road. GRRR

I seen 18.5mph coming back along the bike path. On a stretch where its right beside the railway line. slight incline.

Ordered some more stainless bolts for it

It's in bits at the moment as I consider options for losing some weight - ie lose the curse word susp forks and going back to the nice larger 451 wheels. In the meantime - here's some pix of my 'other' non folding twenty;

With a bit of angle grinding action you can supersize to 24" (iso 520) wheels and have a little pocket racing rocket on your hands. Much fun. Need to get rear bridges brazed and some proper paint (I want do to blue/grey/yellow/black like original Space Lego). Or Red/yellow.
