You need to stitch weld the seams (usually 1" of weld, 1" gap, 1" weld etc) to stop cracks propagating. A full cage is the only way to fully stiffen it really. You could weld a rear strut brace in, then run bars down to the floor.
What about running a bar across the A pillars then bars out to the front strut tops. Not sure how much strength this would add though?

I'd find a race series that uses or used the cars you are modifying and go look at one and see whats been done, no point adding weight where its not needed and it is possible to make a shell to stiff and it'll damage itself on the road if theres no flex at all.

many moons ago I had a ford rs catalogue and one of the sections was shell stiffening and for a mk 1/2 escort it was stitch weld the chassis rails to the floor and the main part was stitching all the parts of the strut towers together and also to the inner wing and finally a triangular section was added to brace the front chassis to the bulkhead, so possibly this may give you a few ideas, also a friend was involved with a few race cars and something they did was to brace from the strut towers to the full cage with bars through the bulkhead . ttfn glenn ps the rs book did say that shell stiffening wasnt needed for road and track just rallying

a simple cage will do the trick nicely. for an old polo a rear strut brace won't make masses of difference but on very hard cornering will help a little. Stitch weld the chassis rails and strut towers not much else needs it. front upper and lower braces will help.

About the stitch welding. I once read something somewhere about it doing real bad things to a shell.I can't remember any details but I think it said the shell would warp as a result?
Kickin myself here for not saving the link. Anyone conform this or maybe add some input??

only if you do complete welds along all seams. do as stealthstylz said and you should be fine.

I seem to remeber someone welding a tube in between the end of the chassis leg and the front panel on a mk3 Polo as there is a hefty gap, and this supposedly helped???
Not really a subject I know much about but that was just something i'd seen done before.

a frame may be a bit over the top but a front lower brace is really helpful for getting round corners

yeah I'm thinking upper and lower braces on the front, and maybe stitch weld the rear.... if i don't like that i can allways add to it... whereas if i find it doesnt need a rear brace its going to be a pig to get rid of
and i thought you would like that mk1 pic KEE
