Did a bit more work on the wiring tonight - I now have all the lights working AND the wiring is neat and tidy both wings now have clip connectors on the wires, so taking them off will be easy. The only odd thing is that the indicators only seem to work properly when the engine is running - but the battery could be a bit flat - it hasn't been charged in months still lots of things to do, but it's looking like a car again

difficult to photo, but you get the idea nearly back together: next job is the bleed the brakes, so I can get it mobile.

finished the (rather pointless ) heater wiring tonight. I now have a three speed fan amusingly, the computer fan I have to keep air moving over the resistors is louder and probably moves more air than the fan in the heater unit wiring needs a tidy, but doesn't it always Also made a start on putting the wings back on, but before I knew it, it was 10pm, so time to pack up

Wings and bonnet back on tonight - the panel gaps on the bonnet are terrible, but I'm not sure if thats me, or the factory.
Also, very annoyingly, noticed that the drivers side caliper is leaking a small amount of brake fluid from -somewhere-. This is the second one I've fitted as the previous one was leaking like a tap, looks like this one is faulty somehow too. Curiously nothing comes out if I stamp on the brake pedal, so have no idea where the fluid is actually coming from.

Panel gaps on MG bonnets are usually horrible, if they weren't already from factory then they will be after the bonnet has been open on its single stand for a while.

yesterdays update - got home early from work and put all the wheels back on the car, started it and drove round the garden to warm it up to check for leaks - found a few on the hoses where the clips were a bit loose, but the engine is still running at a very high idle - 2500-3000 so there is a possible air leak somewhere, or a timing issue, or a fueling issue, or something else. It also -really- runs on when switched off, so that will need investigating too. The most dissapointing thing though is the crank pully is leaking oil, and the engine needs to come out to get access to that. That means the rad has to come out (which is full of nice new coolant) and the clutch will need bleeding again, which isn't fun, and the prop and exhaust has to come off again. ah well. anyway, some pics of it in my garden

I love it!
If it runs on after switching the ignition off you probably have the timing set all wrong, hopefully that'll sort the idling issue also! When I put the "new" engine in my 309 without setting the timing it was so far off hat the engine would actually go up in revs after switching the ignition off ;-)

Nice to see it outside Is it the front crank seal that's leaking? Do you really need to take the engine out for that? If there's any underlying cause for the running on it will be strengthened by the high idling speed. I'd look at trying to solve that first and then see if its still running on. Set the timing obviously in any case.

Set the timing obviously in any case. yeah, the front crank. the front crossmember is about 1mm away from it, so you have to raise the engine up to get a socket on it. except you can't as the gearbox then hits the trans tunnel, so you have to then disconnect the prop and so on and on My next job is to strip and clean the carb manifolds and carbs, fit all new gaskets with a skim of hylomar and go from there

It's weird that you couldn't find the timing marks on the pulley. I didn't have much trouble with my dad's MGB, as lying on the ground in front of the car you can get a good look at the pulley (obviously you might need to turn over the engine before the mark comes in sight). But anyway, as said you should probably sort the high idling first. It would have been nice if both problems would be sorted by the timing, but that was sort of wishful thinking anyway problem is that as long as your engine is idling so hard you're vacuum advance will be advancing the timing to much to set it.

I can see the marks on the pulley, I just can't see the little tab on the timing cover that shows the degrees. I know it's there, theres just bits of car and engine in the way

MGB ones are nice and clear from clutter though, Even the 1500 Midget has curse word in the way.

Ah now I see. I should buy a Midget so that I can stop being so badly informed ;-) it turns out I just wasn't looking hard enough you need to crouch down at the front of the car and peek up under the bumper to just above the front crossmember - the little bracket with the timing marks is then 'clearly' visible the angle is tight, but you can just about shine a timing light on it though, as always, its never that simple I reused the pulley off the Marina engine, but have fitted the timing cover from the MG engine - the two do not share the same timing marks job for tomorrow is work out TDC on cylinder 1 and mark the pulley

been a bit subdued with the car lately - it's running, but badly. I've checked everything at least twice and still no joy, so I'm going to have to strip and clean the carbs I think. But in the mean time I picked these two things up from my parents loft: one is an unused Tonneau cover: the other is an unused hood cover: they go with these brace bars: and the tonneau looks like this when fitted : cheered me up a bit
