I was sat in macdonalds on the high street in newbury (don't ask) when I saw (heard) a very nice, very low, beige beetle coming up the road. When he came up to the speed ramp, he drove the front wheels up onto it, stopped, wound down the window and peered down at the 1" gap between the bottom of the beetle and the speed ramp. He then (extremely slowly) drove the beetle up onto the ramp with a bit of a scrape, and stopped. By this time he had built up quite a queue and an audience. He then drove the front wheels down off the ramp, checked the clearance again out of the window, and drove off. All this took about 15 seconds.
The ramp is 5" tall at maximum. Was that beetle just TOO low?

hmm, mines gonna be too low, ive decided, i wont be able to take more than 2 people in it, i cant 'do' 5 at the moment, due to it curse word off everything, and with 4 i cant get up kurbs. so when ive dropped it another 75mm without hardening the back end, its not gonna be able to accept no one in the back, but anyhoo, itll look good

sump guard is all you need, chassis rails make excellent skids to slide off of speed bumps

Many years ago I changed my driving style to cope with rising fuel prices; I have now reached the stage where I am contemplating keeping my eyes shut in order to lower wind resistance.

you can never be too low, just got to drive your car in a slightly different way to normal and have an amazing memory of every bump and pothole in the whole of your area. and take speed bumps at an angle

i have to follow the same procedure as the guy with the beetle, in my benz. ive learnt where all the potholes are. as for going over at an angle, this doesnt work for me, as the front wheel goes up onto the ramp the opposite rear corner scrapes along the floor, then the underside scrapes anyway. so i just do it regular and p*ss off the traffic behind. ;D

My Amazon scrapes on some speedhumps, even though it's at its standard ride height. There's a particularly viscious one right next to where I live, and unless I drive off it VERY slowly, the rear silencer hits it as the suspension compresses. Too fast, and exhaust is pushed into the underside of the bumper, denting the top of the tail pipe :-(

I belive that technicaly no part of the car should be below the level of the wheel rims, so if you have a blow out nothing can 'dig in'
|
|
... the only injury I sustained was a bumped head when I let the seatbelt of without realizing the car was upside down and that's not really the car's fault.

I like long walks, especially when they're taken by people I don't like.

That's just part of the experience! Because my Volvo is long, I scrape on most speed bumps. But I don't care. It looks good. I'd very much like airbags to get it right down, then have a bit of practicality, but my wife knows how much they cost. So I'm stuffed!

there is no such thing as too low, its just down to how much you can live with. the blue shuv was properly low and i lived with no (well bout half inch) travel. but i always loved it when people stared as i scraped slowly over speed bumps.

in order fr nme to get my car low, I'm going to need to: buy sump/crossmember guard, for under the engine. remove the middle box maybe put in a diff tunnel pay someone to put in a drop curb for the drive buy lowering stuff for the suspension
all in all, about a grand

Lowered my Prelude too much, ended up bending the exhaust hanger on the drive and crimping the center box.

It's only too low if the chassis is dragging on the floor so much that you can't actually move.
