So, went out on the beers last night in Bourton on the Water, very nice. Anyway, went to retrieve the Mondeo this morning, jumped in a went to turn around at the bottom of the lane. I grumbled to myself about the poor placement of the skip, but then I didn't mind so much because I layed my eyes on this.... ....pretty eh? I did the moral thing and asked around to see if it was cool to take it. In the end a little old lady explained it origins and said she was thrilled that I wanted it. So, in the car it went! It's really interesting, it has gears, a weird cantilever front suspension set up and rear suspension via shocks in the rear seat posts. It's complete and apart form the seat, it's never been buggered about with. It truly is a thing of beauty. Apparently it was hiding at the back of an antique shop for years, only to end up in the skip when it came time for the shop to be renovated. I'm sure someone else would have recued it too, but I'm glad it was me. It needs to be fully restored, new brakes and tyres etc. As I don't have the facilities I'm going to take it to my Dads and he'll do it. So, what are the plans? Well, cut it up and weld bits to it of course.... ....I'm kidding. It'll be fully restored and then we'll keep it safe until my little girl is big enough for it, it'll be a cool cruiser for her. So, there you go, a free Schwinn. I'll keep you posted once I get it to my Dad's. EDIT!!! After doing some research it would appear it's a Schwinn Krate (?) and as such it's missing it's gear selector. It's 1970's too, not 60's.

Well, having delved deeper it would appear that it's a Schwinn Krate 'Pea Picker' although it's diffuclt to confirm as the name has been painted over, but by going off the colour etc I'd say that's what it is.
Interestingly though, they seem to hover around the $500-1000 mark in good condition! And this was in a skip! Bloody hell!

Lovely bicycle, great find. Bang some tyres and a chain on it and roll it. You can't buy patina like that.

That is one cool bike! Seems to have a big following as well. Found one from 1970 that sold for £600 on ebay.com but there's none over here so must be worth £200+ here even in that condtition, What a find!

Thats cool
it stopped raining and dried up here. I thought I would go ride one of my bikes. This thread directed my attention to my Bratz Lowrider. I went for a hilly 5 miles on it.

what a result ;D the frame number is under the bottom bracket and you can date the bike from that (I had one which I was able to date as an early 70's one via an American enthusiasts forum. It still had the dealer sticker from a shop in San Francisco on the frame. A google search should point you in the right direction. Think yours may be an 80's one as the earlier ones had an enamel Schwinn badge on the headset I think. You have done well with that one....

Currently driving a '68 Karmann Ghia as my daily. Don't ask about previous cars - there have been way too many and I stopped counting at 160!

Can you be a bit more specific with the location of the frame number? I can't see anything on it at all. Thanks, Chris

Killer find! That's a very interesting and unusual bike.
Also, I like patina as much as the next guy, but I don't see the big problem with restoring it, especially if it's one day intended for his daughter.

With a bocephus sticker on his 442, he'd light 'em up just for fun

a very nice find
you will find a couple of these kicking around in the UK , I had one back in the early 90's which I brought back from the USA and from memory it was an orange one. I'm pretty sure there are a couple on the VW circuit somewhere too.
original & restored ones do go for silly money in the USA
I have a feeling Schwinn did a release of a similer Bike possibly without gears , just like Raleigh did with the Chopper.
