Nice to see Jeremy Clarkson getting stuck in with the shovelling - my great grandad was a fireman, would love to have a go as a one off, but for a career it was immensely hard work. Will try and scan some photos of him, he still had arms like tree trunks in his late 70s lol.

34 minutes to load coal? I don't think so 9 tons of coal and 5000 gallons of water are a fair size load to hustle aboard, they'd be pumping at almost 3 gallons/second to brim it in that time and shovelling at 265kgs/min i never argue with a specifications man

In case anyone blinked and missed the 1 second glimpse of a roadside 340: A Volvo 340 on Top Gear? I KNEW our day would come. ;D I had to rewind cause for about half a second I thought it was yours. Remembered the stickers on the boot n was like NOWAI! Rewound n was wrong stickers though, boo! Ha Ha. I didnt even spot the Volvo at real speed. our lass screamed out: 'ITS A THNIGY!' Nearly died. Thought she'd spotted a big hairy spider on my back or something.

I know next to nothing about trains but am I right in thinking that there's some kind of conveyor system to keep the coal available at that hole where you shovel it from? Yes? So why don't they make the conveyor chute about 6 feet longer so it reaches the boiler and then you don't have to shovel, or is it just to do with Victorian work-ethics or something?

They did eventually, but this is a reproduction of a 1940's designed loco. AKAIK, 71000 "Duke of Gloucester" (a semi-experimental BR steam loco) had a mechanical stoker because the firing rate was so high, and recent tests put its max Hp at somewhere around 3,250Hp with a continuous Hp at 2,700-ish. Not bad for some old 'kettle'!

Just watched it. Amazing camera work and impressive programme as always. The train would surely have had a pretty close timetable to keep by as seemed to be the case what with time to arrive/depart at each stop being mentioned by the other engineers. Not sure I could have predicted a 60 year old car beating it cruising up a lot of single lane roads. Agreed - great viewing, and good to see older machinery being treated nicely by TG Tbh though, that Jag would have more than held its own in modern traffic, and would have got there just as quickly as any modern car provided that both drivers were obeying the speed limits. I still wouldn't have expected any legally driven car to beat the train though.

Are they nice to the marina or horrible? Does it matter? As discussed on this forum after the last Marina "accident" if they bought it they can do what they like with it, none of us would like the rest of the world telling us what to do with OUR cars now would we?

To be honest, not sure how it pans out, though I'm guessing it's going to hit stuff... And it does matter. Buying a car and doing what you like with it is fair enough but they know how much upset its causing, and they do it specifically to wind up that crowd. THAT'S what I find upsetting - the fact that they make it seem perfectly acceptable to do that to people.

TopGear aren't stealing these classics they destroy, they are purchasing them fairly and legally in an open market. If the enthusiasts care about them so much they should buy these cars when they come up for sale.
It is cruel to deliberately upset people but in the case of the Marina owners they picked a bit of a personal fight with Clarkson.
You can't police the use of certain cars just because you have some personal interest in them.

I'm going to buy up every Marina to stop Top Gear getting their hands on it. To be fair, it's quite nice to see some BL bilge on the TV.

"Richard Hammond, Jeremy Clarkson and James May try to find the perfect car for 17-year-olds, negotiating insurance companies, accident repairs and a muddy music festival car park in the process. Richard also visits Abu Dhabi to test the new Lamborghini Murcielago SV and stages a race between the 1000hp Bugatti Veyron and the McLaren F1. If someone doesn't like JC or TG, why do they watch it? for the same reason mary whitehouse watched hardcore pr0n. so they can be shocked and then take the moral high ground, and winge on to everyone else, and eventually stop free thinking people from making decisions about what they watch.

Something tells me that Clarkson will pick a brand new massive SUV or similar overpriced uninsurable tin for the 17 year old section...
