swaymar heads were pretty much polished and ported us spec heads with a modified inlet. I used to run a set on my old mk3 2door. my mk3 when it was running the swaymar heads : but if you were building a big budget cologne back in the day you couldn't go much better than the rs2600 based 3.0 weslake with its unique alloy high port 3 port heads and throttle body mechanical injection these would regularly see over 350bhp the heads were radically different from the swaymar ones

Fibresports called it an X pack... FS called it a "Zakspeed X-pack", and they called the nosecone/tailcone version a "XX-Pack". We're a FS dealer, and we have both types in inventory. But Ford never called it that. They called it a "Zakspeed Turbo" kit, as fitted to the German street edition of the same name. And to my knowledge, Swaymar had nothing to do with the bodykits whatsoever. That's my understanding.

swaymar heads were pretty much polished and ported us spec heads with a modified inlet. That is my understanding as well, NM. The Cologne heads with the third furnace brazed exhaust port cut in and ported, was done by Weslake for Jeff Uren and other dealers of theirs back in the 1970's. but if you were building a big budget cologne back in the day you couldn't go much better than the rs2600 based 3.0 weslake with its unique alloy high port 3 port heads and throttle body mechanical injection these would regularly see over 350bhp the heads were radically different from the swaymar ones You mean like these two engines sitting in my shop? ;D

I guess they added the X pack name to carry on the tradition then, but as fibresports made the kits anyway and you could order mk3's direct from RS dealers with the kits on and diferent chassis numbers to show it I reckon they still qualify as x packs, after all Ford stuck the RS badge on plenty of non rally bred cars and are happy to change XR to ST when its conveniant, they are still part of the tradition.

Those wide bodys are commonly known as mk3 X-packs now anyway, even if Ford didn't call them that at the time (and it probably wouldn't have been something of importance or consistancy to them back then either, different dealers might have even called it different things). To split hairs too, there was no Mk3 anyway, if you want to go that way.

Whatever, I wanted (and still do I guess) a set of those SWAYMAR valve covers they used to do for the Essex. When I was a wee lad my dream was a 3.1 Essex with tripple webbers and the Swaymar heads and most importantly the Swaymar valve covers. I did often wonder what happened to them. Oh and if we are being pedantic, no such thing as a Mk5 Cortina either...

According to this the swaymar heads where not US spec heads but UK spec they cut a bloody great lump out the rear of the head and bonded in a 2 port section? Fibresports sold an "X pack" and a "XX pack" the XX pack had the nose cone the X pack didn't and was as in the seiries X brochure and had the RS logo on the lowwer rear of the front wings, the X pack was made for ford. I believe the name X pack was simply a shortend version of "series X package" but not sure just a guess ? Here's a Mk2 with the zackspeed supplyed kit.

Fantastic stuff, Borty and Poppy!
That's what I wanted to see: something with a Mk3 and X-Pack and official Fordness washed over them. You've done it, and I know something today that I didn't know yesterday thanks to you gents. What had thrown me was Ford's insistence in calling the quite-obviously-facelifted Mk2 (which we all call a "Mk3") a "Mk2"! Thus my earlier insistence I'd never heard of a "Mk3" X-pack offering from Ford (only FS, whom I represent in the USA).
That's a very telling brochure, Poppy!
Now, on the Swaymar, that's even less impressive with the cold-weld goo and 3 bolts holding the chunk on. Harry Weslake's firm in Rye had done 3-port iron Cologne head conversions 10 years earlier back in the 70's for Jeff Uren and Ford Werkes (yes, and they did full race ally heads too, see my photos).
The Weslake 3-port iron Cologne heads (of which my 4WD Ferguson Pro Rally Capri is equipped) were properly FURNACE BRAZED to their new exhaust port chunks.
I still have stacks of 3-port 2.8 V6 heads, and they flow great without all the aggro of either glueing or furnace-brazing extra chunks of grafted head.
Great articles. Disagree with some of the tech claims in the engine article, but that's OK. (Especially the comments about header design, which are 180-degrees wrong.... journalists, what can you do about them? Love and nurture is all.... ;D)

Norm, do you know if Weslake's were doing this work whilst Harry was still at the helm? I know someone who worked there (but left when / soon after Harry died, to set up on his own) who might be able to provide some more info. He also has an all alloy version of the Ford V6 (can't remember if it's Cologne or Essex derived) that dates from around that time.

If you google you will find a lot of information about that M-99 company suggesting them to be a big fat con.
if anyone has dealt with them I'd be very interested to hear from them.
