Evening all.....
So I recently scored a new bike for the boy. His first bike had done him well, about a year on and off of riding with stablizers, then a year of him riding the wheels off it after he learned to ride without assistance.
Well he managed to wear though the main crank bearings. I was unable to source a new set (odd size and it was a cheepy kiddy bike anyway) so got him a new bike.
Having seen other bike modification posts on here I decided to have a crack myself.
He his help (granted limited help, he won't go within 20 feet of the angle grinder) I started to carve it up.
First thing was first, so I removed the front end.
the back end
My tool of choice... I have cut cars up with this baby.. never let me down
So I had a set of door bars for a roll cage for a skoda felicia, so I looked to see how one of them would work out.
As luck would have it, the thinner bars of the bike frame slide neatly inside, and the larger ones fit over the outside of the tubing.
I trimmed a few bits off the the back section tubing
and then slid that into the tubing (which had been trimmed a little)
There we go
I threw the front at it to see where we were at
Got the boy to stand next to it for scale and reach of bars
Hmm... not bad, but it is very long. I then extended the bars using the seat post
It was better but still a little tooo long of a reach. I am also worried about getting it into my car or anything like that If I decide to take it anywhere.
I am a little worried about the junction of the rear section to the spine tube. the spine tube will not bend, but the thin areas around the 'trinagle' of the back might bend under load. I though thought about adding extras to strengthen
or maybe
I also looked at shortening the front. I could cut and shut a couple of bends to shorten the front a little.
So that is where I am at.
I have a few conceptual sketches I have done. I will take a scan or picture later.
Any ideas, comments design ideas or inspiration would be greatfully recieved.
The boy likes it, but then he tends to like anything really. He is quite keen on a medium to dark red for the main colour though.
