Just done a little cosmetic stuff with this recently. I have a day off on thursday set for gearbox and clutch fitting so thought I'd crack on with some other stuff.
Last thursday had a day off and plan was to head down to Area52, catch up with Bruce for a bit and call in at Pro-tech shocks to change my shocks.
Arrived at ProTech late morning and popped in to explain the problem.
I'd basically taken the wrong measurement on my rear shocks... by some way! I'd measured them closed at 13", when I should have taken the open measurement.... 26"... so they were only half too short haha!
They got cracking on converting the shocks straight away as they'd just cleared the mornings deliveries.
It's quite a workshop they've got there, with some very clever tech to improve the shocks and their adjustment.
The bodies are very quickly changed round to 26" retaining the top and bottom eyes. They even let me put some of the parts together. The adjuster at the bottom is an ingenius little mechanism, changing the shock compression and rebound.
In about 20minutes we had these done!
Sleeves are there to be slipped on the top. A quick dip in hot water eased their application...
...leaving!
Just fantastic!! They'll look amazing on the car!
Had a quick chat with the guys once they were all done and they've said in the future (probably over winter when it can be taken off the road) they'll re-do my DIY front struts to a good professional standard, with complete and independently adjustable compression and rebound shocks. Can't wait!
Trip back to Area52 and catch up with Bruce doing an incredible job repairing a moped exhaust that is absolutely shot to hell. Welding in some patches. It looks good!
Drop off at a good friends in Bradley Stoke who's just had his RX-7 rebuilt with a few new body panels (vented bonnet, spoilerless boot etc) Looks fab! I love these cars and this one sounds amazing!! He's got 100miles to go until the rebuilt engine is run in and he can get it all compression checked and remapped.
Engine out, time to rebuild
Engine coming together, time to stick it back in, inclding£1000 clutch.....
Plan is to go candy red I believe... should look smart!
Got home and next morning had some good new acquisitions
Thanks very much to Bruce for letting me have a pair and lending me a pair of ramps! This should make running the fuel system a hell of a lot easier for starters, but will also help gearbox and clutch work, so thank you very much again
I'll give the ramps a shotblast and quick refurb to say thanks. My local shot blasters have had so much work from me over this car they tend to blast things for me for next to nothing. Some POR15 after that should make some much more presentable and a good thank you.
These came too! I was very disappointed that they weren't zinc yellow as they were described on the website but at least some new jubilee clips will look smarter.
Ready to go on!
I had to swap the other leaf spring over but getting off the bottom plate was a nightmare. The washers I'd used fitted just a little too well and were too thin I think and basically had gotten jammed up in the threads. Nightmare to remove.
Had to do a Jeremy Clarkson and whack it with a hammer.
Anyway came off and lesson learnt! Use a thicker washer next time!
Here's the difference in the springs. They sit perfectly straight once under load which is I'm guessing perfect.
All on... here's the adjuster. I turned it up a couple of clicks.
Turn my attention to some more cosmetics bits ready for thursday when I can get the gearbox and clutch dropped in.
Wanted to spruce the gearbox up a little so needs must; I ended up here.
Worst thing for me about coming to Halfrauds is this cabinet!
Nightmare to resist! So I left with some Mitsubishi (yes, keeping even the paint on the gearbox in the family) Silver and .... a 3/8" rachet and a set of 1/2" deep reach sockets.
Looking smarter.
Gave the rocker cover some etch and also the filler cap which I'd welded up and smoothed off
Had a look at the engine and started popping some parts off to clean as they really are a mess there.
Now you see them....
Now you don't...
Taped up and started to clean.
The seals that sit on the throttle body that seal the two injectors I'm thinking about replacing, obviously possibly a nightmare to source anywhere other than a Mitsi dealer. But is this necessary. Are they a one use only seal or replace when perished?
This is where it's at at the minute. Thursday should be a good day! Hope the weather holds out for me. Clutch pedal to be modded, bulkhead drilled.
When I'm plumbing the new hydraulic clutch in, do I hard pipe it all the way or just in and out of the master/slave cylinders and braided pipe the rest? What grade hose should I use for this level of hydraulics?
Thanks anyway guys, you're all being a great help with knowledge and experience.
Catch u all thursday
Chris!
