A lot of pattern parts like that really don't meet expectation these days 😄 i have had to change track rod ends and ball joints between mot's lately. Car does a lot of mile though but doesnt justify 12 months of use 👎 It really is bad nowadays , most pattern part stuff is rubbish , i even bought some genuine crankcase breather hoses for my E30 from BWW - One cracked after 18 months

Just read this from the beginning. What a lovely little car it is. I like your approach to adding sensible modern updates to make it more usable on today's roads. Your thread brings back happy memories of my first car (a 1965 Singer Chamios!)

Thanks for reading and the kind words . i think in the modern world that updating for safety is really a must , keeping cars as factory that compromise yours and others safety is quite frankly stupid unless they are museum pieces and never get used . Decent Chamois are hard to find now esp. MK1 ones like this one and your first car . Have you got any pictures of it please , id love to see it

Did the Lyn valley classic car show over the weekend . 158.8 miles there and back with some pretty steep hills to go up and down giving the engine and brakes a real workout . Singer ran superbly other than a brief massive miss fire which was my fault as i forgot to turn the fuel pump back on after a stop . Used a cup full of oil and no coolant , revved really clean , in fact it was bloody brilliant . Temp was fine and that was with the heater off on the whole journey Did a plug colour check after getting there - seems fine . Some pics . I don't generally sleep well but one bonus of this is superb sunrises

Way back in Nov 16 I rebuilt the twin SU carbs on this , then in March one had a sticky piston which i sorted quickly . Anyway a mate at work has given me a Gunsons C/O meter so to test it i tried it on here as i tune this by ear so thought it would be good to see how good my ear actually is . According to the Gunson it was slightly low at 3.5% ( ears not that bad then ) so I richened it up slightly to just over 4.0% . Then to check the Gunson I popped to my local friendly MOT garage i use and with a bit of bribery used their pro mega expensive calibrated C/O meter , The result was 4.4% so the free Gunson is only a fraction under reading - not bad for a home use bit of kit . Singers running slightly better on the new richer setting so all in all a success

Need to get my nova down to mates to use his old Gunson!
We tested it on the forklift and it still works after lying dormant for over a decade!

They say you never stop learning Had a play with the CO meter again today , as its over reading by 0.4 ive reset the mixture so its bang on 4 using my meter ( reading 3.6 ) not the garages thereby having a reference for future use . Two things i noticed . Having deliberately tested the CO with the engine cold ( but off choke ) I noted they run much weaker until fully warmed up , hence why it wont start without said choke . The Singers engine lid vibrates slightly when its up and the mixtures not bang on - an easy way for me to tell if its moved at all. Every days a learning day

Some of you might remember way back in April I was experimenting with another alternator stator - well finally its built and working as i want it - Took three attempts in the end , first one the wire wouldnt even fit , second the output wasnt what I was after ( over 50A hot ) and this one i did in April has just been waiting its turn Its a right mix of bits , Brise alternator with a Denso rotor , my OTT upgraded winding , flexi anti vibration stator leads , top spec bearings , top spec insulation etc etc . For the technical here the stator passed the earth test at greater than 100,000 GOHM at 2000V. Guess its not earthed then 🤣 Cut in was at 960RPM , output was 55A hot , just over 60A cold . Hopefully il get it on here the weekend for some proper trials.

That looks suitably impressive but I am surprised at the seemingly small "wrap" or contact area of the drive belt with the pulley - does it run at a higher tension?

You and me both , it runs quite slack really and has never come off or slipped - id like more wrap but even the original dynamo was the same , strange idea really

Wow, when are you going to take orders for these alternators? I'll take one!
You could put an idler/tensioner on the starboard side and use a longer belt, this would give more wrap.

Ive mulled on an idle tensioner and it is an option should there be a problem although its been running like this for decades . Alternator in its standard factory spec is available here but they arnt cheap - rewound by me adds about £150 as its 5+ hours extra work . www.brise.co.uk/Brise-50A-Motorsport-Alternator-4Si-50.html

I only had the car for about 10 day's as when going around a bend (enthusiastically it must be said) the front suspension collapsed due to excessive corrosion and spun me off the road knocking out a telephone junction box, crashing through some iron railings and landing on the roof of a Ford Anglia parked in a street on a lower level behind the railings! Still can't help but having a soft spot for them and all imp variants though. Keep up the great work and updates please.

So the Singers wiper motor was making strange noises and this was tracked down to a worn armature shaft . No probs as we might have some at work and after much hunting found a S/H one with a near perfect shaft , winding was shot thats no issue . Also they have been a tad slow , wether due to the shaft wear or something else I'm not sure however every test I did came up with nothing , no stiff wheelboxes or cable , voltage fine etc etc . Anyway as the armature needed a rewind and having got the original winding spec I altered it in the hope of more speed . And it worked rather well , nice to have decent wipers at last One very worn Shaft , its replacement was perfect ,this image is after the rewind obviously As it was , engine off Much Better , same as above , engine off - background noise is my neighbour who decided just at the wrong time to pressure wash his car And finally --- wipers that wipe at a decent rate
