Hello all
Got a great Suffolk Punch petrol mower from Grizz last year and now I'm trying to get it started. Does anyone know owt about them? When I pull the starting cord it feels pretty stiff - all suggestions gratefully received!

I have one somewhere. Very simple sidevalve engine, not a huge amount to go wrong. I've seen another that was a bit stiff to turn in the past, in that case it was simply because it had stood for ages and needed a bit of freeing off. Dismantling and reassembling is about as simple as it gets with any engine.

These are great engines, very simple. But don't do what i did and run one on pure alcohol and shoot your knee cap with the exhaust ;D. Seriously i would put a little diesel down the bore for a few days and just keep turning it over slowly, thats worked for me in the past.

probably just s bit stuck.... as said some diesel and maybe try heating the engine up and drain the oil.... refill it.. chuck some 3 in 1 down the plug hole and stuff a new plug in there... clean the carb out and give it a go.... as said very very simple engine... just needs some care

Thanks for all your help so far - the other thing is I'm concerned there's no spark at the plug.

Richard, go look for the stationary motor forums.
The guys and gals there are massively helpful.

Longdog - thanks for the offer and I'll be back to you in the next day or two.
Retro - ta for that: work continues tomorrow and I'll get on to those pesky magnets.
Big thanks to all who've responded: just wait 'til I start asking about the Bantam!

Well, I was back on the mower yesterday afternoon, and ended up perplexed.... But luckily Mark from next door came round and we ended up getting much of the Punch dismantled

Well, it's not yet running, but what's needed on these (they all do that sir) is a major clean-up of the points - then it should, according to the local expert, run. Here's hoping...

they have magneto's within the flywheel,,,,contact breakers and condensors give the most trouble and as ive had previously the oil seal on the crank is prone to letting oil seap onto the points there is an inspection window in the flywheel that allows you to check the points gap and general condition
also the peeshooter zenith carb mixture screw down on the side will damage the jet if its screwed in too tight from memory the lower mixture screw has to be 1.5 turns from fully in and the upper air bleed has to be 3/4 turns from fully in

is there anyone on here who hasn't dragged one of these home from the local dump and had a fiddle with it LOL I used to be on about two a week when I were a lad. The Suffolks I rated were the first ones, all cast iron and chains, no belts. clean them points. And don't break the aluminium flywheel when you are tryin to dismout it from the crank.

They do have something of the "My first engine" about them, I'm pretty sure a Suffolk Punch was the first engine I owned that ran

hi, were moving house soon and need to get rid of our lawn mower. when moving it i noticed it was a suffolk (although slightly newer than these ones), do you know if there is a bit of a following for them? or is it worth saving myself the hassle and flogging it for £20 or so?
cheers
(and il go grab a pic in a bit)

"clean them points. And don't break the aluminium flywheel when you are tryin to dismout it from the crank."
Currently i am dismantling a punch, and i managed to break three fins of the flywheel? Have i destroyed the engine now. They are on opposite sides.

Nah, they're fairly resilient, and if the vanes are broken off on opposite sides then it'll still be more or less in balance... as well as a single-cylinder engine can be.
Seems everyone's having fun with non-sparking suffolk engines lately. they're fun engines to cut your teeth on.
