I really do need just to paint the damn car. It's all the wrong shade but that silver looks so much better than the faded matte on the rest of the body. It brings the shape out so well in the sun. Phil

Going to replace the electrolytic caps on the ECU to try get rid of the "slightly odd" quirks.

ECU time. Replaced all the electrolytic caps (long overdue) and the tantalum (because they have a habit of going off like firecrackers when they get old). Same component, small one better specifications, 35 years apart. Toothbrush for scale. Fitted it back in the car. Gone is the cough and sneeze on stabbing the throttle. Significantly more low end torque than before. Not running so rich, the exhaust smells better. Win win win. Good for another 20-odd years now. Phil

Phil Only 8 months late but I love the brightness of that silver! Sad thing is, as nice and bright as it was (original silver was similarly bright) the paint didn't care for drying in summertime heat and shrunk so now it's all full of crazed cracks. Phil

I am always astonished to see that you’re still slugging away at this. Full marks for doggedness.

Well, a bunch of stuff happened. Mostly the tornado that took the garage down. The other side wasn't hit too hard this time (last hurricane took the roof off the workshop). The debris buried the car in, so I dropped a couple liters of fresh fuel in the tank and gave it a jump start. Still looking the same as it did (crappy) with a few small dents and dings but nothing major. Interior is all mildew and mold. Yuk. Surprisingly, it ran just fine. Parked it up, switched it off and that's where it sits because the battery is so fubar it wont charge at all. However, it's out. I'll give it a wash when I can. Phil

Thanks for the update Phil.
Again a case of the like button not really reflecting my opinion.
Hopefully you can pick up a cheap/free battery somewhere.
Windows or doors open may help dry it out when the weather permits.
Good luck regardless.

Windows or doors open may help dry it out when the weather permits. Good luck regardless. Chieftain needs a new battery, so that'll get a replacement and the retired one will go in the Renault. I'm going to get a quick disconnect for it though, I left it connected because last time I tried to go do anything on it I got chased away by the bees and left it connected up. Mind you, it must've had a dead cell or two because it wasn't regulating voltage well. With the battery from the Chieftain connected on jump leads, I got a steady 14.5 volts on the dash so that's the issue on that one. Ic need to run it and put the aircon on to cycle it. That'll dry it out nicely too. Needs a jolly good clean inside too. Phil

I have been following this thread for 12 years. I think it was one of the first I looked at when I joined RR. I love this car, not for what it is as a vehicle (although it is cool) but more for it's stubborn survival abilities.
I know you have many headaches to deal with at the moment and I hope they pass in the foreseeable. When you get through this patch it would be great to see you put the final touch on this.

A local wrap company would surely knock that up quick smart It would never stick to the paint as it is. Though, given my luck with the silver, I might just throw a bunch more white on and then some yellow... For giggles. Phil

I think the tacky silver suits it quite nicely, brings out the lovely shapes of this 80's curse word box. Or slap some gunmetal grey on, might also work nicely.

Fleet rationalization time.
Renault is up for sale. It runs and drives but needs a few bits doing. Harmonic balancer has delaminated and needs replacing, steering rack leaks. Everything's sun-faded as y'all know and the paint is horrible. I do have the Zender body kit parts for it that are hard to source. Clean Louisiana title in my name.
$1200 obo.

Bought a new battery, car fired up second twist of the key. Ran and drove up and down the street. Still stops in a straight line. Aircon still works but needs some gas adding.
Replaced a bulb. It is still fun to drive. Need to free off the throttle stop motor though, that's jammed up.
