Take the bottom covers off (pry out gently) below the switches on either side of the bottom of the dash.
Several screws at the top under the sun screen.
Remove the steering wheel- pull the rubber center off and undo the hex bolts holding it to the boss.
Remove the steering column cowlings, top and bottom.
Pull the top of the surround out, lift upward toward the top of the rear screen. Vent pipes pull undone inside.
Unplug the clock.
Gauges are held in with a couple screws.
Pull out gently a little, reach behind. You cannot pull the cluster out far without breaking the speedo cable plastic. It twists then pulls off, thinking counterclockwise.
Take care removing the wiring harnesses, the plugs by now will likely take the copper strips of the pcb with them.
Ditto the bulbs in the holders when you undo them.
Do not tighten the screws up much, the plastic has the strength of chocolate.

No real updates, car is off the road still, cracked windscreen and it ingested the thermovalve for the hot air intake damper in the airbox.

Replaced a headlight today and washed all the bird poop off the car. Scraped the pine sap off the windows and took it for a quick drive. A few misfires bit it has cleared up now.
Gotta do the passenger side CV boot because the rubber has split (crappy Chinese rubber) and fling it in for brake tag. The brakes are now better but really need to be bled again. Ramp at work is OOS so that is awkward to do on gravel.

Yeah, still plodding along. Still got a plate on it so it isn't a lost cause yet.
Looks a bit better for having had a wash, it's parked up at the front of the driveway now, rather than gathering acorns and moss round the back of the house.

"and it ingested the thermovalve for the hot air intake damper in the airbox." Is that that stupid valve that routes air to the intake over the exhaust manifold when the engine is cold? I never knew what to call it really. Yeah that has a nasty habit of jamming on the hot side only which is fine under ~40F but increases your fuel consumption in the summer. I ripped it out (very forcibly) of the airbox in both the R19 (with EFI) and the R11 (when I swapped the engine). In theory it must help the engine warm up faster but it was built with the loving indifference of Renault (or in your case AMC) so it never works.

Yup, that is the one.
It did work just fine until the valve fell apart and got drawn imto the engine.
I have the vacuum line blocked off for now. Fou d it runs a lot smoother when cold with the intake warm, which makes sense.
With the damper flap on hot, it will easily heat the airbox to 50C+. I am just annoyed that it was designed upstream of the air filter.

Congratulations! Is this it's first inspection in years? If so, I know the feeling! My Renault's NCT expired in mid 2012 but so many little bits to sort out first.
Also about the valve, interesting that there is a difference in the running seeing as it only heats the air going to the intake after the manifold is good and hot. I would have thought that the EFI would compensate plenty for that and only aid in warming it up. It's been so long since I had one, I can't even remember the difference. Maybe I'll keep an eye out for one now...

No, last test expired in October.
The manifold is hot enough to heat the intake in about ten seconds of running. When the intake manifold is cold, it does make a fair difference but that is because this is TBI, not MPI. I think with MPI the intake charge isn't that critical as there is less place for the fuel to pool.

Again, a long pause and not much to report. GTA is broken again (duff crank sensor after replacing ignition amp) and it now has its own garage. It has leaked gearbox oil and power steering fluid onto the floor, so I guess the place belongs to it now. Phil

Hi Phil, Not sure if you are on here much anymore, but seems some of the pics (many) have been replaced by ads. Any way we could get those back? Great build, I love it, and am about to start working on mine.

I started on trying to rescue the potatobucket pictures the other day, life and other commitments like work got in the way. Going to try fix that this weekend.

I second that, Phil. Your tenacity with this car is an inspiration. Keep working on it, and keep posting. Oh, and congrats on your new garage!

I was thinking that 'New Home' meant it had been sold/passed on but good to see it's got its own hanger now. My '88 R21 is our everyday family ride now.

Yeah I got stung by that photobucket fiasco as well. There's a plugin/extension for Google Chrome (possibly firefox too now) called something along the lines of photobucket P500 fix I think. It basically shows the pictures behind the ad. It's temperamental and you have to rehost your photos and then go and edit the posts one by one and replace the links but at least you'll see what photo you're to replace rather than guessing. Painstaking is an understatement. I put it off for months and finally spent a couple of hours doing it. You have a report ten times as long as mine though!!! Good luck! Next time I'm down south I must give the GTA a little visit haha. If only the Audi's exhaust hadn't snapped for the third time this year already!

Great to see an update. Garage storage? That’s great. Love this thread, orphan cars need love too.

Well, nothing's happened to it. I took it out for a drive a couple months ago want the right hand cv joint started squealing.
It's been in the garage since. I just hadn't had the enthusiasm/time/patience to pull the suspension apart again to fix it.
