Been doing a few things here and there with the car. Rebuilt the old CV joints, discovered the reason I had removed it because the tripod is worn and clicks.
This afternoon spent a bit of time with the DA sander and took the boot lid down to smooth good primer/bare and put etch and high build primer back on. Hopefully tomorrow I'm going to be able to put another coat of high build on then rub that flat and put on a couple coats of silver, flat that back, possibly another coat then clear coat, flat, cut and polish.
I want to see if I can viably lay down a decent coat of silver paint without mottles, tiger stripes or generally weird looking bits.
If I can, I have decided against the Acropolis rally colors and want to put the car back to smart, shiny silver. It was a rare color to begin with, so might as well stand out for that sake rather than eye-popping race colors. Particularly as it's not been race prepped. The CV joints see to it not ever being a race car...

Insurance cancelled, plate turned in, currently sitting up in the car port possibly pending sale. A genuine enthusiast has expressed interest. It broke one last time, the straw that broke the camel's back, as it were. There's a replacement sitting in the garage, but it's not a Renault. Phil

Replacement is in my signature- '51 Pontiac Chieftain.
Renault has been sat up since about November. It had vines growing up through the wheels and is covered in a thick layer of dirt.
Pulled the plants off, opened the door, switched on the ignition.. was greeted with a dash full of lights. Twisted the key and the damn thing started straight up, engine didn't turn over more than three times before it caught.
It went up the drive (with comedy flat tire), the aircon blows cold still, brakes work.
Backed it up and parked it again.
It's still here. Don't know if it'll sell.

Yup. I don't like painting silver still.

So, what’s the current plan?

Were those imported from Renault or assembled here/USA?

Current plan... It's sitting up under cover. It gets started occasionally. It needs a new intake top hat bimetallic valve- that's probably a standard Renault/Volvo item but I've not found a cross reference. Power steering rack needs to come out and be rebuilt. Engine really needs to come out for that so it'll be at least until the Chieftain is roadworthy before I do that. At the same time the driveshaft gaiters need doing and the harmonic balancer, which is the source of the shrieking belt. There's a rusty hole opened up in the back of each back window. It was crunchy before. I ignored it and it didn't go away. The glass needs to come out to fix it and frankly I'm afraid of trying to do that for fear of busting the glass. Front screen is cracked (not to the extent it falls inspection but it's pretty crummy), good luck finding a replacement here easily. So, under cover it sits.
It was built in Wisconsin at the AMC plant in Kenosha, gearbox was imported from France, as was the engine block and a few other odds and ends they had the tooling for. But overall, it's an American built vehicle.

Hmm.
I know that you’ve had it a long time, and that it has taken up a whole load of blood, sweat and tears, but maybe it’s time to pass it on to someone else?
My mum had a Renault 11 around the time I first started driving, and I have fond memories of ragging the bejesus out of it, but they really were built with a finite life in mind. Not sure I’d want to take on a good one these days, let alone a neglected one.

It's been offered with no takers.
It's also not in my way.

Well, if it’s not draining resources that are better used elsewhere, and it’s not in the way, then it’ll give you something to play with once the Pontiac is done. 😃

Maybe, if not it'll just sit there it's at. It's costing me nothing to store so that's good enough for now. Once the Pontiac is in a run/drive situation I can more easily busy the garage removing the engine from the Renault. It'll be nice to have a proper roof and engine hoist this time.
Only problem is I had evicted all the spiders and bugs- they've since taken up residence again.
Might even paint it properly when it's indoors. Who knows.

You could used the engine in the trunk of the Pontiac as an APU to run the proposed A/C system.
OK, I won't say anything else now.

Gosh darn you all. Put it on charge, took it out, ran it to temperature and gave it a wash. Sensors are a bit dicky, it cut out a few times and I think the fuel in the tank is bad. Added a couple gallons to dilute the curse word and it picked up a bit but the exhaust has that peppery smell of old damp gasoline. Parked it back up and put the battery on charge. It's fun to drive but the steering rack and pump have had it. Phil

My mum’s Renault 11 was a humble 1.4; a 1986 D plate GTL (with a carb I imagine), but it had five gears and was extremely nimble. I’m amazed that I never smashed it up given how hard I used to drive it.

Yup. This has the JB3 gearbox with the same gears. It is similarly nimble but with a 2.0 it has a fair bit more torque. It goes okay, considering. For a European hot hatch(ish) it's pretty good, by American standards it's dog slow. Renault didn't do their market research. Or, they did and WE IN THE BOARD ROOM KNOW BEST.
I guess that's why they aren't selling cars here any more.
