Err. the car still exists.
If I stick a battery in it, it'll probably start.
Progress may resume come February/March.
Watch this space (as it drops back down the pages again).

Alrighty then... *deep breath* .. where were we? Oh yeah. Somewhere last year. I stuck the interior in it and threw a bit of paint on. Now there's progress. The weather's suitably wibblepoo today. 20140128_102913_W 107th St by renault9gta, on Flickr What better day, off work because the roads are going to freeze (I don't think Southern Louisiana even owns a gritter truck) so went check on mother-in-law's house and decided to see if the car would spin over. 20140128_103730_W 107th St by renault9gta, on Flickr Got it all opened up, fluids checked.. Greeted by Angry Cold Lizard in the the door jamb. 20140128_103133_W 107th St by renault9gta, on Flickr Engine's still there. My photograph skillz* are still most excellent also. (I was shivering with the cold, the wind chill was about -5) 20140128_103433_W 107th St by renault9gta, on Flickr Forgot that I'd not disconnected the battery. It was dead flat. 20140128_103447_W 107th St by renault9gta, on Flickr Primed the fuel system by jumpering the fuel pump relay contacts. Whatever greb was in the lines, coupled with air etc should in theory pump back to the tank and mingle with the year-old fuel. 20140128_104333_W 107th St by renault9gta, on Flickr With the relay removed... I shot a little video. Not bad, really. To prove it, I drove to the end of the driveway. 20140128_105552_W 107th St by renault9gta, on Flickr Heater still works also, really very well. The where-the-air-goes flaps seem to have decided to stop working properly though. Another thing to look at on the list. Locked up, tucked away but not forgotten about, again. Hopefully work resumes shortly this year. The fact it starts and runs and drives and steers and kinda stops fills me with confidence* that it should be good to drive about in. --Phil

Angry Lizard stayed put right there. Closed the door back and he was back in his hidey-hole. Those ones are essentially harmless. That's probably one of the warmer places he will find locally.

Bonkers! Thank you for reviving this thread, it give me enough joy to read that I will completely overlook your whinging at -5 windchill when it is -35 windchill here -

Luckily I've had a $0 rent place to keep it for the last year. My toolbox has gone all rusty in the interim, along with some of my tools SWMBO agreed I'd not nagged about the vehicle at all last year so hopefully this year's looking a little less bleak. My intention is to (legally) break down drive places in it. --Phil

Good revival! One thing to remember, is that even though these things might have their issues, my R11s have never broke down in such a way that I couldn't get to my destination (and back home). I've had the rear axle torsion bar snap, the exhaust pipe fall off, wipers stopped working, lights blown from one side of the car...

Good point, they were carbs. On the other hand, I've been told many times that I would get a lot more reliability if converting the Renault from the current 1.7 carb (F2N) to the 1.8 16V EFI (F7P) of the Clio. But, I'm going on a tangent here, less of me and more of the awesome GTA

I had a thought on the lumpy running- I'm going to go take the idle speed adjuster off and pull it apart again and free it up. It likes to jam when it's not been used.
Also, I have the bimetallic bit that the pipe goes on to for the little hot/cold flap in the airbox. It's currently sucking in cold only, so drawing in warm from around the manifold should also assist it starting up. That and the EGR valve is fubar. But that's spendy.

Had a brief moment this evening to do things, so drove down to mother-in-law's whilst bread dough was rising. Unfortunately, it was also dark. Impromptu spotlights: 20140130_181230_W 107th St by renault9gta, on Flickr Grabbed the 8mm and the 10mm spanners (I'm surprised at my memory sometimes) and pulled the idle stop motor and the intake lid off: 20140130_181240_W 107th St by renault9gta, on Flickr The throttle stop had jammed due to inactivity, the intake hat thing has a small bimetallic strip device valve thingy which operates the hot-cold flap (oo-err) inside the airbox. I purchased a spare one. That left dangling wires and a gaping hole, so I need to bring that back tomorrow before the engine fills up with lizards. 20140130_181255_Louisiana 3235 by renault9gta, on Flickr Brought that lot home and took the idle stop motor apart to inspect for problems. Grease was still all good from when I'd sorted it last time. Motor had jammed up though and freed off with a small SNAP when I twisted it with my pliers. 20140130_184041_W 25th St by renault9gta, on Flickr Reassembled and put it onto a 12V power supply. It now.. moves. In a slightly disconcerting way. Replaced the piece with the broken off pipe: 20140130_185753_W 25th St by renault9gta, on Flickr ...and as an afterthought checked that the "foot off the gas" switch was still working. Hold thing, hold camera, and SHAKE WHILST PRESSING SHUTTER BUTTON 20140130_190446_W 21st St by renault9gta, on Flickr Yup, just under one-fifth of an Ohm. That'll work. Tomorrow, refit, if all goes well. Hopefully before the sun goes down. --Phil

It never really left. It just went into stasis.
I'm saving a little on driving the van to and from work (1 mile) so I can drive to the car (8 mile) and work on it.. Go figure.
Either way, once it's mobile it'll be easier to work on, as it'll be at my house.

Went down after work today because sunshine and pleasant weather. Car assumed the position again: 20140131_170621_W 107th St by renault9gta, on Flickr Started reassembling the various odds and ends. I had blocked one of the vacuum pipes off with a rubber bungy. Cheap chinese rubber, every one of these things I bought has split. curse word stuff. No wonder China's population is expanding so damn quickly. 20140131_173004_W 107th St by renault9gta, on Flickr Connected everything up to the new, unbroken widget. Assembled and reconnected the idle stop mechanism. 20140131_173015_W 107th St by renault9gta, on Flickr I think I've gotten the pipes right. It makes sense to me.. the two pipes make sense. The top one is connected to the intake flap. the bottom one is connected to one of the vacuum ports on the throttle body. Block the top one and the flap goes to hot. Unblock it and it moves to cold. Heat the strip and it bends away from the top port, opening the cold vent. However, the bottom one has a little thing on it that sucks the strip back in when there's vacuum present.. so, at idle, under high vacuum it pulls the valve shut and draws hot air to help vaporize the fuel at low flow rates. Open the throttle, lose vacuum, if the air is warm, it'll close the hot air flap and draw more dense, cold air in to help with power and torque. Makes sense? I think so. Emissions fun Started the compressor and put some air in the tyre that had gone flat. 20140131_173338_W 107th St by renault9gta, on Flickr More lizards in the door.. it's 20C out, so the have gone light brown and move quickly now. 20140131_173632_W 107th St by renault9gta, on Flickr Opened the airbox. ...Yeah, it's filthy in the bottom. I just don't want to pull it out and clean it because I'm lazy and it's held in with bolts that are hard to get to. Checked the flap operates. To HOT: 20140131_174506_W 107th St by renault9gta, on Flickr To COLD. Huzzah! 20140131_174528_W 107th St by renault9gta, on Flickr Closed everything up and took it for a run up and down the drive to exercise the steering and brakes a little. Idled it, the fan cut in at the last white line before red and cooled it down rapidly to the previous line and switched off. Parked up, switched off, locked up. One down, fewer things to go. --Phil

For cleaning the filter box, get some kitchen or specific engine degreaser that's safe for use on plastics and give it a good squirt in there. Allow to soak for a little while and wipe out with paper towels. Repeat until clean. It'll take a while but it beats getting to wherever the bolts have been hidden.

This post for Vulgalour, because I got an inkling that the inbox on my car was a distressing sight. Today started slightly foggy. Tumble dryers were involved. 20140202_101558_W Main St by renault9gta, on Flickr Went to the auto parts store. Had a 4am start today. I think the most I'll be attempting today will be to go check see how well (if at all) the battery took charge. It's been on overnight.
Ran the wire outside, the charger's in the car, suspended off the carpet on a couple rolls of duct tape to allow for ventilation.. I don't want to ruin that charger! It was expensive, more so than the fully automatic ones, by about four dollars. Go figure.
Either way, the battery is toast, but it may accept enough charge to get the thing going, at least. I put it onto 2A float charge before I left (it had been on 6A) so we may have progress.

Oh, and something I'd forgotten.. the interior heater flaps do work, when I'd tried them there wasn't enough vacuum in the system and they were merely sluggish. After running a couple minutes it had built up and they move positively to the places they are meant to. Win.
