After a lovely* 4am start, I went down to the car to see how the battery/charger was doing. It had taken a little bit of a charge, but seemed to not have liked charging at 2 Amps. I switched it to 6 Amp instead. I looked at the photo of the airbox from yesterday. It's all dirty on the lid in that picture, so I decided on something simple to do, so I cleaned it up with a toothbrush. 20140203_172253_W 107th St by renault9gta, on Flickr Nice and clean. It's not gonna stay that way, but eh Also decided to look underneath to see where the oil spot on the driveway was coming from I shouldn't have. The entire back of the sump is an oily dirty mess. Ugh. I need to find where that's coming from 20140203_172819_W 116th St by renault9gta, on Flickr Need to jack it up and get in there with a flashlight. Hopefully it's something simple like the sump seal has dried out and since running it up to hot has decided to curse word oil everywhere. Unfortunately it looks bit older than that, and I hope it's not coming from the crank pulley end... that's a horrible mass of seals and hylomar-type sealant (factory specified, not a bodge) which I don't want to have to pull apart again. --Phil

Welp, the old battery has well and truly had it. Unsurprisingly, charging it merely made it and the battery charger hot.
New battery when I can afford it then

Hopefully the fix for the oil issue is something simple. Or then just run it at least for one summer and add oil as needed, and fix it when you take it off the road again. More motivation when you have been able to already use it for some time? Just looking at the picture, the boot for the gear selector rod end (?) seems to have completely exploded, or is it just weird looking from the flash? Also, if jacking up the car, a quick application of some rust converter or Hammerite might do the trick for the orange parts? Heh, that red middle exhaust looks like a cherry bomb

Hopefully the fix for the oil issue is something simple. Or then just run it at least for one summer and add oil as needed, and fix it when you take it off the road again. More motivation when you have been able to already use it for some time? Possible, though it was leaving a 20cm patch after a single run up to hot. That's a bit much, even by my standards. Just looking at the picture, the boot for the gear selector rod end (?) seems to have completely exploded, or is it just weird looking from the flash? No, it exploded. I need a new one. Also, if jacking up the car, a quick application of some rust converter or Hammerite might do the trick for the orange parts? Thankfully that's just dirty from where the water pump was leaking before I owned it. I just never cleaned it off because it's currently on top of a layer of oil that's protecting it. Heh, that red middle exhaust looks like a cherry bomb Because it is --Phil

I really want to see this project roll rubber on a road. What's left to get it on the road Phil? Err Fix service brakes (fitted new master cylinder yesterday, need to bleed, possibly at the weekend) Fit new CV boot to driver's side (ugh) Fit new steering arms and balljoints Front end alignment ($90) Figure out why generator light now stays on Sort leaky header tank (glue/flames seem to be adequate) New battery ($120 i don't have right now) New tyres ($600 I don't have right now) Insurance ($66/mo or thereabouts) Tag ($15) Brake tag (MoT, $10) Tank of fuel ($55 or thereabouts) I think that's about it --Phil

So yeah. I had a real bad case of "meh" with life in general. Kicked myself metaphorically in the head and I'm getting back on with things lately. I bought a new master cylinder (this one came with a spec sheet and a new serial number) and fitted it yesterday evening after work. I need to bleed the system now, the old master cylinder, despite being a rebuild was showing signs of having been leaking past the seals. Ech. I have a new CV boot and the steering arms and also the front caliper seals if they continue to look wet. I can't see them improving by themselves. I was going to head down tonight but it's been threatening to rain and the wind got really cold so I decided against it, instead possibly at the weekend if the weather holds out.
Right now there's spaghetti cooking and I'm sorting out the electronics for my computer, listening to my rebuilt hi-fi system (Pioneer SX-650, 1973 for those interested) so life's good enough right now.

Just finished the daunting task of reading this entire thread. This is awesome. A tip for you, the overflow tank off a mid 80s jeep is the same one used on your GTA. They are fairly common and easy to come by in junk yards. I make it a habit to pick them up whenever I come across them. I have a few spares if you can't find one. My hat's off to you Phil, you have inspired me to get off my rear and into the garage to do some work. I have an 86 alliance convertible that I'm working on, lots of spare parts including 2 complete GTA engines and also a GTA transmission. I've owned alliances since 1983 and have been collecting parts the entire time. Let me know if you have any parts that you are in need of.

Steve, thanks. That's good to know. I was figuring it'd be something commonplace.
If I can't repair the crack satisfactorily with heat and plastic welding then I may have to hunt. The plastic has gone really nasty.
I'm on the lookout for a pair of gray interior cards for beside the rear seat. Mine have gone nasty.

I know I don't have anything in gray, I might have them in tan, could be painted, I've used interior paint before with very good results. I'll check to see what I have. I can always wrap em in plastic and throw them in the Mississippi, you can fish them out when they get to you...timing might be an issue though.
Started my convertible for the first time today. Fired right up but blowing smoke from somewhere around the TB, probably a hose, (I hope)

yes, if it dies I'll put one of my 2.0's in it. I have one that needs a rebuild and one with bad valve seals.

Thanks, Always good to have. I do have a fairly complete parts list for the Alliance, Encore, GTA that I picked up off ebay years ago. I'll see if I can scan it and get it to you somehow. I bought a Lot of Renault NOS parts 4 years ago or so, from a guy that restored AMCs, he had no use for the Renault parts, so I have a multitude of tiny itty bitty parts. I'll send you a list of those too.

Heh, thanks
Not much (read: nothing) happened to the car this weekend. Saturday I was ill, Sunday was hijacked by me getting really badly sunburned sorting out the late grandmother-in-law's yard which was beginning to look like a lost Amazonian jungle.
Maybe during the week, it's due to be a little warm though, around 30C

Great work going on here, love my French stuff and obviously these are like a super rare 9/11 type car. Keep up the good work.
Also if you ever find the efi inlet manifold off a 1.4 version let me know I'd like to get hold of one but they weren't ever available this side of the water
