You're getting closer and closer!! The car actually looks good, which is pretty amazing for something that's halfway between a Renault 9 and an 11 Huh?? No seriously I do like this. Nice job with the window winder. My friend just snapped mine couple of days ago. Not sure I will have the same amount of motivation as you to fix however as it's the passenger side. Goes down well with the winder but not up...

The sucks. The plastics on these cars seems to be somewhat biodegradeable.
I spent a while with folder clips and glue reassembling the broken bits of bodykit over the last few days. Need to get some rubber bungys to put in the holes for the pieces that go behind the rear windows and the bits that go behind the rear wheels have some equally broken sections where the pins go through the bodywork.
I'm tempted to make it bolt-in from inside the wheelarch, need to see what access is like in order to do that.

Had a brief moment this evening after work to go down and fettle the car a little, as a by-product of having to go to the house to reset the circuit breaker that tripped out. Fitted the bodykit that goes behind the rear window, and attached the piece from behind the rear wheel, though I didn't initially realise how the brackets were assembled and broke the glued piece. I need to drill a pop-rivet out before continuing. Even with it not sitting square, it looks better. 20130906_174728 by renault9gta, on Flickr That picture bleached out a little but does show the lines of the bodykit. Compare to where we left off last time: 20130826_180727 by renault9gta, on Flickr Closer inspection: 20130906_174741 by renault9gta, on Flickr I'm going to be painting the sections behind the windows satin black to match the rest of the accents on the car (rear lights, front grille). Brakes have improved having sat up. Strange. --Phil

That does look better, aren't plastics horrible to work with though? Novel with the brakes improving through lack of use. Having said that, the brakes on my Golf improved for being left alone until they were used a few times... turns out the front flexi pipes have collapsed internally and need replacing.

Having said that, the brakes on my Golf improved for being left alone until they were used a few times... turns out the front flexi pipes have collapsed internally and need replacing. The plastics are vile to work with on this. They fall apart. The brakes were all squidgy before. Pulling up on the handbrake results in Comical Squealing American Tires (TM) and now I can't stamp the brake pedal to the floor any more. the car now comes to a halt properly rather than not really stopping. Mildly perplexed on that one.. might just have kinda-sorta bled itself a little. Oh, and I've discovered that under load, the exhaust blows when in reverse. In a forward gear it doesn't. I'm guessing the spring-loaded joint is pulling apart enough to make it FRRRRTPPTTPPHHPPT because the exhaust has no flexi-section. It might get one. So, bodykit bits back home to be re-glued, possibly rubbed down and painted. Need to locate the little top-hats that go in the holes to hold on the bits behind the windows. The picture showed it held in with two, there are several. --Phil

I like the looks of the car. It looks far better than a regular Renault 9. I would buy the bodykit if it existed.

I have a R5, with a bodykit from Renault. It's so brittle that it breaks when you look at it.

The body kits were designed by Zender, I believe, who makes kits for Mercedes, BMW, VW, Alfa Romeo... I would guess it might be more the climate or care of the cars that result in damaged parts rather than the build quality. The only problem I've ever had with my two GTAs was the front air dam starting to become detached, probably because it spent a lot of winter months plowing up snow. I know of someone with three GTAs parked with I assume all of their kit still intact if anyone needs one. They're in eastern Ontario in Canada, so a bit of a drive and probably too expensive to ship.

Not too hard to ship if the shipper is willing to cross the border. I shipped an MG Midget top across the USA via Greyhound for about $50. Where in Ontario?

The guy was in the country near Russell Ontario. He had 3 GTAs, mostly intact, and a lot of Renault parts. That was 6 years ago by now, but he seemed to be in no hurry to get rid of them.

Been a while. Haven't gotten very far with anything much lately on the car, but this weekend was supposed to be a bust, with Hurricane Karen headed this way. Welp, Hurricane Karen turned into Tropical Storm Karen, then Tropical Depression Karen, then fell apart and became The Cluster Of Rainclouds formerly known as Karen. Opened the door yesterday, watching the weather reports... saw this: 20131005_092804 by renault9gta, on Flickr Expected the worst for today. It just plain didn't happen. 86F/30C with 90% humidity. Felt like a sauna. Bright sunshine. After everything was said and done with lunch, charity benefit, talking to the olds etc, headed down to put a bit of time in on the car. I'd run it on Friday and the expansion tank had sprouted a beautiful fountain of green coolant. Decided to see if the plastic would take any heat or not, with my trusty BBQ lighter. It did, and now merely dribbles. The engine got up to temperature and held pressure. Mostly. 20131006_160143 by renault9gta, on Flickr Next up was the usual. Empty half a can of Raid around the vehicle. This was up inside my wheelarch, by the A pillar. Was doused and removed with extreme prejudice: 20131006_160128 by renault9gta, on Flickr Made a repair* to the damp-course membrane on both doors with duct tape. Getting to be more tape than vinyl but eh. Whatever works. 20131006_160157 by renault9gta, on Flickr Put the door card back on. Bonus points for getting duct tape past where the door card finishes. 20131006_160532 by renault9gta, on Flickr Phone refused to focus because it was so sunny behind the door. Same on the other side: 20131006_161842 by renault9gta, on Flickr Bolted everything back in to do with the seatbelts and put the rear seat back in. Finally. It's only been sat in a pile in the back for three years now. 20131006_164508 by renault9gta, on Flickr Yes, yes, yes... one of the rear trim panels is all torn and broken. I know. I'd just forgotten about it. It's back on the to-do list. Packed up and went home, stopping in for beer and a frappuccino for the wife. Know I'm in the south. Local beer named after a road, and Starbucks coffee with their slogan for the place that sells it here. 1381100369066 by renault9gta, on Flickr Brakes have improved a little but still don't inspire confidence. List shortens. Major structural rust on my windscreen wipers too.. --Phil

That interior looks very comfortable, and I like the design of the door cards a fair bit. For the door membrane, I found that a bin bag cut open to be a flat sheet and fixed to the door with double-sided carpet tape worked a treat on the Polo and was just about the cheapest solution.
What are those bugs? I don't recognise them, they look a bit locust-y. I find the nest structure pretty fascinating.

I figured I'd re-use the plastic as it's nice and thick, and in most places still flexible and not prone to breaking. It's about the same as what you'd put over vegetables in the wintertime. The seats are comfy, in the way the French seem to make them. Even with the front bolsters, the car is comfortable to drive. The bugs are, from what I can tell, polistes annularis, a variant of paper wasps. They are vicious, will swarm and chase you if the feel threatened. Their sting is unpleasant too. --Phil

I notice you have a French car disguised as an American one, and your beer is the opposite. Beware Keep at it mate, only a few niggles left now!

20% of the work taking 80% of the time.
Doesn't help that the car is stored miles away. I'd probably have gotten more done if it were closer, but I have no hardstanding by the house.
I need to get my pressure-washer running again (carb issues) so I can blitz the bugs off the steering and suspension; then I can re-bleed the brakes.
The rest just boils down to dollars right now.

Nice seats. The front seats seem similar to the ones on R9/R11 but with much better trim. And I do like the black door card / red line. Should have been like that on my black R11 which had a red bumper strip. For the money issue, just loose the pickup and use this as the daily

To stop using the pickup is the eventual goal- keep the miles down on it. Unfortunately, until about February I might as well drive it- if I lay it up I'm still paying the bank monthly for the privelige... that doesn't go away magically --Phil

Spurred on by reading about cars, drove down to the Renault this evening. Pushed it out into the late afternoon sunshine. Familiar sight. 20131011_171750 by renault9gta, on Flickr The old heap of junk isn't aging gracefully. Tried to remove the strip under the rear window and was greeted by CRUNCH Mmmh, the corner of my window has turned into bran flakes. Need something to halt that, then .. ideally get that removed and a new bit welded in. That'll be fun. 20131011_171805 by renault9gta, on Flickr Oh well. Turned my attention to the paint. Again, the reason for the original respray- the factory paint has cracked up and gone porous. Looks like a dried up riverbed close up. 20131011_171731 by renault9gta, on Flickr Began to rub it back with 800-grit and a constant stream of water from the hosepipe. Discovered a miniature ding in the corner, so small it doesn't show up on the camera. I only noticed it because the paint rubbed back and left an O of primer in a sea of bare metal. 20131011_172239 by renault9gta, on Flickr Some lovely* bodyshop person has marked it for repair by scratching through it with a screwdriver, or possibly a machete.
