I hate you! ive been fighting the urge to buy a bug for years give in to the urge, you know you want to! ;D you could always visit Paul Hamilton at VW Speedshop in Manchester - ask him to take you for a spin, I'm sure that would convince you! ;D and just think of opening your garage door to see a sweet bug sat next to a sweet sunbeam! I know i do after continuously seeing the pics of urs in ur signature!!

I will probably eventually but i need somthing really dull that i wont attempt to take apart and restore and update when I'm bored so i don't have to use the sunbeam daily

Sweet pics! Question (as i know nothing about the aircooled way of life), How, without going mad spaceframing ect, do you make a Beetle handle. A lot of them are just drag cars but how to you make a Beetle into a B road blaster? this is very cool, but what is the cannon shaped thing hanging off the side?

A lot of them are just drag cars but how to you make a Beetle into a B road blaster? this is very cool, but what is the cannon shaped thing hanging off the side? although its ancient technology its not that hard to get a beetle to handle well. With some decent shocks, a little lowering, some wider rims, and some decent rubber they handle like go-carts. My mates got a 1600 twin port on twin Dell 36 carbs and a few little tricks and it is one of the best handling cars ive ever been in! Or you buy a 1303 type model with McPherson strut suspension which is better performing from standard and more fine tunable. the canon shaped thing is an old air conditioning unit

the trick is not to go mad - a beetle tends to handle better (or certainly more consistently) when it's not slammed to the floor with mad camber on the rear. raise it up a bit, decent tyres always make a lot of difference, and proper named shocks.
if it's twisty stuff you like though, i'd also recommend a 1303. it was the 1972 attempt at updating the beetle mechanically with mcpherson strusts up front and IRS at the back. they may look a bit 'pregnant' but they're bloody amazing to drive, they don't handle like a 30 year old car should. also ripe for 'german look' modding - porsche carerra wheels, dechromed, drilled bits, dark solid colour, GET IN!!!

See orange example above ^ yeah that got posted whilst i was describing it, that's a brilliant example of a german looker. Volksworld years ago had a red 1303 on the cover.... drilled bumpers and door handles, porsche twists and some crazy big type4 motor. beautiful. was my inspiration for years until i scrapped my 1303 for terminal rot

theres always www.germanlook.com , and of course the shoptalk forums. generally i hate 1303's, i must admit. But that orange one is a nice example, as was the purple one featured in volksworld a while back. Although it only ran a 1600 it was a lovely car. the silver 1303 that was on the volksworld stall at the volksworld show 2 years ago (and featured in Ultra not that long ago) is the nicest 1303 ive seen.
