Having saw Boogiemans new boat, and having scanned in a load of pics of my old boats last night I thought i would throw them up. Not a huge amount of pictures, Didn't have a digital camera 10 years ago!!! The first boat is a Simms, but i never found out what model. It was the pre Super V model. It had a Johnson 33 hp two cylinder two stroke. Hit about 35 mph one up and felt pritty fast. I got it as a bare shell basically. I repainted it two tone black top, white bottom. I retrimmed the interior with white fake leather and black carpet. Took it for a few holidays, the best one being at Lake Windermere! I think it was a late 70's or very early 80's boat, but if anyone recognises it and has more info, I would be greatful! The other boat i had was a Metzler inflatable with a 15 hp johnson outboard. That went like stink, and was scarey fast for a small boat. It inflicted a brused rib on me once! not pleasant! Moored up with my parents boat in Helford, cornwall! I will see what others I have in a second

that first one is the nuts!!!! how much them things weigh? I'm thinking of getting one after the polo is done., so that might need to pull it lol although if it ever had to (doubtfull) it wud only be to the local river. (hamble) thats the perfect size and look that i want of a lil oldskool boat

Thanks mate.
The boat without engine could be lifted by two strong blokes, and the engine must have weighed around 50 - 60 kg!
boat and engine together can't have weighed more than 200kg!
As for a polo, it would pull it, but not sure i would want a long journey.
Also getting it in and out of the water is where you need some power and grip. fwd doesn't tend to work well!

Indeed, you get a great sense of speed with small boats!
The bloke who owned the boat before me had a 60 hp mercury engine on the back... mental!

Both of those boats are amazing! The first one is very beautiful (and retro) and makes me want to own something similar very much. The inflatable, on the other hand, leaves me in some awe of your bravery as a helmsman! Having driven one of those outboards on a 3.7m tinny (aluminium hull dinghy) I can say that on an inflatable it would be somewhat terrifying! Especially as that inflatable doesn't seem to have any rigid structure at all, is that right?! Anyway, a nice pair of boats.

Thanks waveman
The Simms (black boat) was great, and all in, remarkably cheep.
The storey goes, that my partents actually bought the boat on the trailer because they wanted the trailer. The boat and trailer was only £200 (10 years ago).
My parents used the trailer to haul their boat (the white one) and the simm sat on the grass in our front drive.
I asked my parents if I could have it, and they said yes, so i set about working on it.
I stripped it all out, sorted all the mechanics that were on the boat, i.e. the steering which was a bit stiff, and the throttle. The boat came with no engine, so i actually bought that johnson from a local boat chandlery. It was an old engine then, i seam to remember it was a 60s unit.
The engine and fuel tank with a few other bits cost me £200. I had to by a new drive shaft because the engine came as a long shaft unit. i.e. there was an exention installed onto the leg to move the prop furer down into the water, which would have been done so it would fit on a larger boat.
So i took the extension piece back out and managed to find a short shaft drive shaft and fitted that. That cost about £50 all in with some new gearbox oil
I fitted that engine to the boat and all connected up.
I retrimmed the interior as i mentioned, and fitted a few saftey devices like a kill switch on a strap that connected to my life jacket, and a key switch that added a little to security (not much though). that lot cost me about £50 in new foam, the same again in fake leather, and a free offcut of carpet from a local huge carpet warehouse.
I got the speedo working, which was a cool feature. it used water pressure to gauge speed.
Repainted for about £50.
So all in the boat was free, and all the other bits cost me around £400!
Waveman - the inflatable had a wooden structure inside. It had three large 22 mm thick ply floor plates (front, middle and back), and a ply transom with stiffeners. The transom was braced with metal struts to the floor. Once it was inflated, it was really rigid and stiff. As an unusal feature, it also had an inflatable rim under the floor that made a keel at the bottom, so instead of it beaing flat, it had a ridge. this helped massively with speed and stability.
It was silly fast for a small boat. It must have done about 35 mph as well, which is scarey fast in an 8ft missile!
It was really stable though, as the inflatable sides went back past the transom with boards on the bottom. this helped to prevent the boat flipping over backwards at speed, you still had to hang off the front when going flat out to keep the nose down though.

Found a couple more that is the inside of the boat. You can see the speedo to the right of the wheel. The engine on the boat Note how long it looks. If you look carefully you can see an infill section above the propeller. I removed that taking about 10 inches off the length of the leg Packed up ready for some fun you might be able to see the leg is shorter in this pic down on the river thames 10 points to anyone who recognises where this picture is taken. Another shot of it on the drive Another picture of my inflatable. This picture was taken in southampton... about an hour after this picture was taken, the tide and wind changed and really kicked up a chop. I was jumping it off waves when i got it a bit wrong and slammed into the water hard, shooting me forwards into the wooden dash. Bruised rib ahoy! A pic of my parents boat a few days after we bought it. We got it lifted out of the water at the boat yard (before we had a trailer for it)

land lubber alert!! can you just go and plop the boat in a river, lake or the sea and have a blast about, or do you have to have licences and permits?

You need a river licence or lake licence/permit
but they are cheep.
A river licence for the black boat for the Thames was about £100 pa, and the lake permit for lake windermere for two weeks over the summer was about £30.
You don't need insurance, or a driving licence.
As for the sea..... its free!!! just dunk and go, but be careful!!!

Oh the other thing, is you don't need any form of mot or sva or anything.
So just get a boat, and a HUGE outboard, and scare yourself stupid!
Most boats are rated for hp, but you can always push the boundaries a bit.
I knew someone with a little rib (a bit like my inflatable but with a fiberglass lower hull) which was rated to 25 hp. He put the lightest 40 hp he could find on it and it held up ok. It was too fast really, but mental none the less.

cant see me ever owning a boat, i was just wondering about the regs. nearest i get is hiring a rowing boat and having a nice relaxing row up and down the river wear at durham. i am also partial to hiring a boat and having a float around on derwent water when I'm in the lake district. havn't done either for a couple of years though.

Interesting that you don't need a licence to drive a boat in the UK. Here in Australia you need a licence for anything with an engine, boats powered by sail or rowing are fair game. I've just got my recreational boat operators licence, costs Au$63 and never needs to be renewed!!
