yeah . . in Switzerland you need a license for all boats with more than 8bhp or a sailboats with more than 15 square meter of sail surface . . with all the training lessons and the practical and theoretical test you'll spend close to 1200£ . . .

with all the training lessons and the practical and theoretical test you'll spend close to 1200£ . . . Wow!! Very expensive. For recreational boats here we only have a theory test. It gets more complicated if you want to drive boats commercially or drive anything really big.

well . . I do live in a very populated country . . so rules and tests are necessary for almost everything . . and it makes sense . . . there are a lot of boats on the lakes . . ppl should know how to drive . . not just theoretically but also in real . .

sorry to be an old stick in the mud but i think you will find that a few rule have changed since you were boating ,this mainly applies to inland use [and now the norkolk broads] all craft with an electrical/gas /or fuel system [ie engine] has to undergo a boat safety certificate of compliance examination [£130] all systems are pressure tested and have to comply with fairly strict guideines, to get a boat licence you have to show minimum 3rd party insurance , and boat safety certificate, some sea based harbours and slips will not launch you until an insurance cert is shown , there are less and less places available inland to go and hoon round in your speedboat , they are even now enforcing 'drink drive' penalties on some bladdered 'weekender' boaters it is all great fun but you are being watched more nowadays thanyou used to be!!

I thought The boat saftey certificate covers gas cookers and heating, not the fuel systems (or did anyway!)
I must admit though it has been a few years!

I'm a little curious now I've seen that little speed boat! I used to bloody hate boats, had many unhappy experiences in sailing boats and kajaks.
But the though of being at the helm of an outboard powered little speedboat sounds fantastic!
I havent read much on this 'mot' style test or licensing, but could you guys maybe outline the price of purchase ownership on a 'project' boat?
Or point me at a suitable site?
I do love that little Simms!

I still maintain that for the type of boat that I am talking about, you don't require anything in terms of a boat safety certificate.
On reflection, you may need insurance, but there is no MOT type thing and you don't need a license to run one.
As for price, I did mine for about £400 - 600. A budget of 1k would get you something nice and cool and fairly fast.

Cool boats, I've always wanted to get myself a little motor boat.
To me it'd be less about speed and more about getting away and relaxing.
To anyone considering it and going out onto the high seas I would reccomend doing some reading on the subject and investing in some proper safety gear. I work out in oceans on a ship and thats dangerous enough, let alone on some small craft.
One day...

you don't need a safty certificate for all powered boats i currently have a cargocraft with an outboard which is exempt, you do need insurance though which costs me £40 a year with a million pounds cover just incase i hit a tug and sink it! I have had loads of boats they are great fun if you are carefull.

cor time past I used to tow a 13' 6" shakespear with a 50hp mercury redband motor behind the SWB beach buggy, had good times at Winderemere and down at St Ives monst other places but there are very few places left where you can use a speedboat these days even the odd cruise down the river at night to a pub and return at high speed in the twighlight is out. sold the boat as it took up a fair bit of space for limited use, an associate had a 15' boat with a fiat 2L twin cam and stern drive fitted. seeing the thread about over engined we took an 8 ft spitfire down to aberporth with a johnson 40hp motor on it, sat still the washboard was level with the water so it had to be kept moving but it pulled a skier ok.

there's nothing like spending a few hours on the water on a sunny summer evening after a exhausting day at work . . . I recommend it 100% . . it's like a small vacation everytime! Seconded! Got a little boat myself, though nothing as fantasticly retro as the ones in this thread, little 15 foot aluminium one with 15hp motor, love it. can just park yourself in the middle of a lake and chill. or do a spot of fishing. I did borrow a 25hp 2 stroke for it ones though... fun but not exactly relaxing. damnit this thread has made me want to find and fix up another retro speedboat again!
