Found out about low profile tires being curse word in the snow last time I went snowboarding.
Was driving my daily, Mitsi Colt CZ3 with 205/45/16's... terrible, had to put the chains on way before I thought I'd need to. Remember driving my 1.8 Sierra Estate fitted with the standard steelies and balloon tires thru snow around the north east without a problem.

My Lexus is RWD and has 18" lo pro combo. Hmmm, today I found out that V8, auto and big wheels with 275 profile really do not mix at all. Some scary shizz. Gayer...

Drove to work smiling in a bone stock volvo 740 GL auto, no problems whatsoever. Except not wanting to go into work, such was the appeal of the massive empty car park outside. Likewise, 'cept Sven has a manual box ;D Had to go to the Arnison centre to do some shopping and they had a big empty carpark

I'd love to go out and mess about in the snow but where I live it's not feasible, or safe. Ho hum

Warning: The following post is not meant to be taken incredibly seriously, so don't get hysterical! Cheers.
Work sounded vaguely disappointed that I'm not turning up today. Sadly, there's a deeply complex equation involving perceived car value, perceived job value, importance of job and sliding scales of risk/time/effort. Regrettably it did not fall in their favour.
To be honest, if all people with non-essential jobs didn't attempt to turn up to work in conditions like these it would greatly ease the problems for the Highways Agency and emergency services, meaning people that do need help receive it. Yes, the country will ground to a halt, but it's not like we get extreme weather very often. It's not feasible for us to have snow ploughs just in case the weather goes mental for a few days, we should just declare them "chill out" days and relax until conditions approve. Bits of the US have to close down because of storms, tornadoes, etc. and they seem to manage. You don't even have to do anything with snow, it melts itself.
However, my gesture of community spirit will probably be met by a stern telling off when I get back to work. I didn't choose to be a hero, but that's something I'll just have to live with! Time to ease the pain with a delicious fry-up.

I made it into the office yesturday in the FWD modern with low profiles.
It was all good until i got to the slight hill that my work lives on. I ended up going up it in reverse! all good though, but got sent back home almost straight away!
One of the directors span his BMW and almost curse word a brick! haha!
I really wish though my estelle was in road legal order. Would have been ACE! but allas!

Had no problems in York yesterday, even though only the main roads were gritted.
Probably because I was riding a mountain bike with experimental studded tyres (butchered some well worn fatties with a pop-riveter and several rolls of insulation tape - worked surprisingly well)
Although I do remember we had snow a few years ago and for some reason the roads hadn't been gritted, the Midget performed admirably and didn't go sideways any more than in the wet. Good laugh driving past the numpties who were presumably re-enacting scenes from The Fast and The Furious (the Slow and the Spurious perhaps) in all their 'put it into first and floor it' glory. I had the top down too.

Had no real trouble in the MR2 this week - despite short wheelbase and rear-weight bias (and balloon tyres!). Whole-heartedly agree with the comment re. people driving with lights obscured. Went past a chap in a new civic on Monday - all windows still snow covered, all lights covered, nothing but a small circle cleared on the windscreen directly in front of the driver. I tried signalling him to make him aware of the idiocy - but he couldn't see me

The MX-5 was awful, a combination of low weight, rwd, lsd and low profile tyres made it almost impossible to even pull off, let along attempt a corner! Still made it the 12 miles to work though, most scary thing was attacking the a38, could feel the rear fish-tailing at 70...

Had no real trouble in the MR2 this week - despite short wheelbase and rear-weight bias (and balloon tyres!). MR2's FTW in this weather! The light overall weight combined with the weight it does have being over the driven wheels makes really controllable. It's a billion times better than my BMW 330 in the snow. When the snow came down on Sunday evening, I really really struggled to get it home in one piece. Hence, I've stuck to the g/f's MR2 since then, it's dead easy to drive in the snow!

"Did you switch your wipers on with your windscreen covered in snow?" ....Cue sheepish silence and hanging of head

But you'll have studded or winter tyres, generally most parts of the UK don't get bad enough winters for those...that compunded with the fact some people simply can't drive...
I used to have a set of Colway M+S tyres on my old saab 99, unstoppable in winter. No problems in my Merc 190 either...

But one thing to think about, when it comes to "bad tyres"... Any car, wheter it is f, r or awd, will have equally bad brake grip in slippery conditions...
