working from home 'cos I don't want to be driving in the snow (which seemed worse than it probably is, meh) and my cars are like and So the view from my window is as I'm going about my business in the front bedroom-office and every now and then I hear a sound of a motor revving wierdly and the occasional "bang" of alloy wheel hitting kerb and sure as eggs is eggs its a BMW/Merc every time. Probably because they are the most common rear drivers round here. Bet they don't feel so "ultimate driving machine" now LOL. Always nice to have a front driver or two on the fleet for days like today

Yes couldn't agree more, fun when the weather is good, gash when it's not. As seen in the "cars and snow" thread i had to abandon ship last night and walk the last 10mins home, that'll learn me but it was still fun and worth it me thinks ;D

I have no idea why people cat drive RWD in the snow, i find it much easier, at least you can accelerate and steer at the same time, cant do that in a fwd in the snow, its one or the other, my mercs been fine, i reckon its more to do with the current rwd cars all being expensive and having wide low profiles on em not cos rwd is worse.

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.

A slightly lowered (but otherwise stock) Hillman Imp is awesome in the snow.
Not a chance of understeer, lots of traction from the rear engine. If you do want to play, it'll just drift gently and controllably - it hasn't enough power to really get you into trouble, unless you do something really stupid.
Stops OK too - brakes without servos or ABS FT Feel Win. Just remember to cadence brake.

Ah yes, "Working From Home". That old chestnut. Prob'ly explains why our car park is half empty today. At least I managed to struggle in, committed to keeping the company going despite the harshest conditions. You're a disgrace AK, and don't tell me you wouldn't be out doing donuts in that Sport Fury right now if it worked.

My ultimate driving machine and I made it from SE to SW London today for work. The traction control light was flashing for most of the journey.

Theres a lot of AA vans out today. Would I take the Sport Fury out in the snow? probably not. Mind you they don't even grit the roads round here so it wouldn't be a problem with salt. The problem is the other cars. I remember some time back having to do emergency manouers in my bro's Renner to avoid a Carlton which had got it wrong and was coming towards us using both sides of the road. So its not so much my driving I worry about its the other fools out there drifting in the snow intentionally or otherwise. When I were a lad I remember having to sit on the boot of my dad's W123 280E to get it moving at all out of school. I still occasionally need chiropractor to look at the injury which inevitably happened the day I misjudged the speed of the car... I've driven plenty of RWD stuff in the snow, Capris and Chrysler yank tanks and all sorts and never stacked one. I prefer FWD though. Its the one time that having all that weight up front over the drive wheels is a good thing...

I made 20 miles of a 60 mile journey in the 406 but got to brighton and was sliding everywhere so turned round and went back home , mate in the next workshop phoned and said there was about 8 inches of snow there and he had trouble down the backroads in his 4x4 explorer , meant to be worse tomorrow .

the cedric is staying put! not a massive fan of rwd on narrow snowy streets , even road camber can make you're twitch , don't get me wrong i rallied for years so i have done plenty of sideways driving , but not in a near 2 ton auto cedric with wide low profile tyres!! there is a time and place for it, still I'm out in the tranny van today thats manual and rwd , with lovely big ballon tyres and tools in the back , and my wife has a crv honda which is front wheel drive until wheelspin occurs then its $wd ,its really quite surefooted i have to say!

I was going to post a thread asking if Volvo really was Swedish, and whether they have all the snow they claim they do... 'cos our 940 is AWFUL. I have had and driven a few RWD cars in the snow, and usually think it's great fun (the Midget is surprisingly very capable). Have in teh past gone out specially to play But the 940 LPT is a nightmare - below 1500rpm about stalls, above that mass wheelspin as peak torque is at 2300. Pulled out the drive and made mistake of trying to go up the road instead of down, cue more sideways movement than forward, with the back end going UP the slope. Granted it's wearing 'summer' tyres, but they have good deep tread. It's even got my work equipment in for a bit of weight in the back, but no, for first time ever I was defeated and had to roll/slide back down a hill. Oh, and discovered that what I read about turbo 940's after 1993 coming with a locker diff is incorrect Guess in Sweden they just fit chains/studded tyres when the season changes.

Problem with the newer Mercs & BMWs is people haven't read the manuals on how to correctly use the various ESP, DSC, ABS and traction settings for snow use.
DSC on a BMW, for example, if left untouched, makes it virtually impossible to move off or climb up a a hill if it's snow or ice covered and ABS systems throw fits because you can lock various, or all, wheels, making it think you've stopped or are doing something decidedly odd!

When my mum had a 328i in the snow she turned all the ESP / TC / DSC off and floored it up our drive (100 metres of fairly steep hill). No problem.
My dads V6 mondeo however didn't make it past 20 metres!
The Impreza just strolls through, no problems whatsoever!
