add to that ^^^ (lewis' post not adams) most drivers havnt got a clue how to drive in snow anyway. ive had 27 rwd cars and 2 fwd cars and ive never got stuck where its been me. I have on occasion been brought to a halt by a few fwds as they try to drive up hills in 1st giving it 5k revs.

lol.. drove to the station this morning nice n steady in the mrs atoz.. there's a steep hill down to the station itself.. just took it very slowly (icey as hell) didn't slip or lose control.. then when we realised all trains were cancelled it was time to get back up the hill.. mx-5 tried first.. I've never seen someone get a car so sideways unintentionally.. we all waited at the bottom of the hill till he'd/she'd disappeared.. was swinging from one side of the road to the other... I just tootled back up it at 2 mph.. shopping trolley ftw.
(did make me wish my Deli hadn't been stolen though..)

my dad had a Volvo 264 GL back in the 70s and that was extra-abysmal in snow. I remember that getting stuck on a hill going to school and a mate nipping past us in their Renault 6! Another car which was dreadful in the snow was a mate's dad's Zephyr 6. I thought that car was well cool as a kid as it was an ex cop car and a bit ratty, matt black bonnet and probably checker tape stripes on it too.

FWD or RWD the trick is Proper snow tyres ;D Seriously, once you have tried them you will never go back to summer tyres through winter again I have them fitted to the Van (New shape Trafic) as they are hopeless in the Snow, especially with no weight in the back With snow tyres fitted it doesnt oversteer so much (Yes its FWD but it loses side grip in snow very quickly on summer tyres) and you can just drive through anything I Did Norfolk to Loughborough this morning no trouble.... over taking stuff struggling at 20mph while I`m driving along like I`m on wet tarmac..... just ace No good if you get collected in someone elses accident, or stopped by someone blocking a hill, but thats more often than not down to driver error and not knowing what to do in teh conditions

Guess in Sweden they just fit chains/studded tyres when the season changes. Winter rubber is compulsory between certain dates, makes a lot of sense.

My Lexus is RWD and has 18" lo pro combo.
Drove to work no problem, after scraping 3" of snow off it. The first part of my journey is on back roads which hadn't been cleared. The GS does have a 'snow' button which reduces power to the rear wheels.
The thing that grates me the most about driving in snow, is the fools that drive too close behind you, and the majority that clear their windows, and leave their lights obscured.

Sierra's been fine all day! Just how u drive em. Lorry has been a ton of agro with the traction control but once that it turned off that wasnt too bad either. Trailer swaps are dodgy tho!

best normal car i ever had in the snow was a mk2 granny 2.8i ghia S, manual box, LSD, enough weight to squash the tyres down through the snow, and absolutely no worries about damaging it or abandoning it if it got stuck, which it didn't, even towing my mates dead merc through 18" of snow from a lil viallge in the middle of nowhere. Feel the fear they felt seeing this coming at em sideways full of idiot looking blokes, note the CB arial nailed to the door and the damaged front from knocking over a large wall in Romford during a sledge towing incident.

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.

been stuck in the omega, but that had lots of power and wide tyres that needed replacing, and even then only got stuck on a super steep hill which was the only way home. Still got out after plenty of wheelspin though. slightest bit of camber sent the thing round to full lock sideways though and that was just trying to move forward. At idle. The Senator however is useless. Ive never known a car get stuck going downhill before, but it managed it! and that was on the standard balloons! Hate to think what it would be like now. Been driving the T5 (VW) al day today. Shes been ok, not stunning but never got stuck. As said, we just don't use snow tyres in this country, or chains much. The fact it virtually never snows doesnt exactly help though as most people just havent a clue what to do..... me included but I have been alright so far without any near misses.

Mazda is long, RWD, auto (with an over eager kickdown!) and has budget tyres on. Oh, and only weighs 1200kg, most of which being at the front. I left my house at 5.45 am and travelled the 5 miles to work at an average of 45mph. No dramas. I don't see what the problem is! Mind you, I'm a northerner (geordie) so I guess I'm more used to bad weather. Bunch of pansy southerners! lol.

Problem with the newer Mercs & BMWs is people haven't read the manuals on how to correctly use the various ESP, DSC, ABS and traction settings for snow use. DSC on a BMW, for example, if left untouched, makes it virtually impossible to move off or climb up a a hill if it's snow or ice covered and ABS systems throw fits because you can lock various, or all, wheels, making it think you've stopped or are doing something decidedly odd! nah, I drove the one on the right this morning, it's the 225 run flat tyres that cause the problems, with DSC disabled it just sits and spins, with the DSC you can get far enough to really get yourself in trouble.... ;D 270ftlb of turbo torque and 225 tyres do not make for a relaxed ice drive....

Drove to work smiling in a bone stock volvo 740 GL auto, no problems whatsoever. Except not wanting to go into work, such was the appeal of the massive empty car park outside.

I have to admit to sniggering earlier as a I watched some tit in a late model 316i make a total of driving up a very slight incline whilst others in lesser machinery (including an old dear in a Micra, and a friend of mine in a completely unladen RWD transit) sailed by. It may be the ultimate driving machine, and FWD may be for girls, but there's no point in having excellent chassis dynamics and perfect 50/50 weight distribution if you can't drive properly.

I had a similar moment this morning, overtaking a woman in a Porsche Cayenne on a hill with all four wheels churning at 200mph, going nowhere.
As I passed her going up the hill in my unladen 7.5 tonne Merc I made sure she clocked me steering one-handed, and drinking coffee with the other. ;D

What got me, was the numpties who hadn't bothered to get any snow off their cars except the front and back windows.
All I got today was snow flying off peoples cars towards me and big chunks splatting against the road.
I also wished for rwd today, been having a play you see and fwd just ain't as fun.
Though I did get stuck in a big muddy mess of wheelspinnage when trying to turn around in a feild gate XD

My Lexus is RWD and has 18" lo pro combo. Hmmm, today i found out that V8, auto and big wheels with 275 profile really do not mix at all. Some scary shizz. The empty car parks at 1am were fun though, if totally un-controlable.

A couple of inches of the white stuff and the country seems to go to the dogs! Mind you - I'm saying this because I've been blatting around in the Delica. 4WD + Mickey Thompson MT tyres ftmfw... All those anti 4x4/green party types weren't hating my car last night while I was pulling them up ice covered hills - there is no justice, but I've still got plenty of good Karma to share around. More snow please....Delica + snow were made for each other. Having said that - I wouldn't want to take the 'sloth' out in this....it's twitchy enough in the dry!
