thought id spend a day (maybe 2 tops!) replacing the scabby arch on the back of my merc before deva- before. after i cut out all the rust, filler, carbon fibre sheeting(!), seam sealer, mesh and prevous patching ive still got the remove all the scraggy inner arch yet too! at least i got the new outer half-fitted look how much curse word there is on the floor, that 2 hours previously was the back half of my car! ;D

That's weird - looks exactly like my Benz when I attacked the rear arches! Except I forgot to remove the contents of the boot when I cut the old metal out and hacked through a load of stuff with the grinder, including spare wheel! ;D

Good work! I would NEVER have got as far as even the third pic, I'd just be sat there, staring at it wishing it would fix itself...

Doesn't look like you're wearing safety goggles.........!
Good work though - are you going to leave the new arches black for the complete 'rat' look, or are you going to spray them up?

how can you tell about the safety goggles!
I trust you’re not one of these turkeys who writes to practical classics EVERY FREAKIN MONTH saying ‘last month on page X you showed someone welding without a mask/cutting without gloves/under a car when the axle stand was not visible, this is very dangerous and irresponsible, I should know as I am a health and safety representative at my local bridge club etc etc etc’

I never wear the bloody things, which is why I've got 4 major scrathes on my left cornea, and a burn patch on my right retina....

I can't remember if it was in Practical Classics or Classic Cars, but I saw a letter from someone complaining that a car on the cover (Anglia I think) had an old IAM badge on the grille, yet the driver had their elbow out the window IN DIRECT CONTRAVENTION OF IAM GUIDELINES! OH THE HUMANITY!

Ah,It's not funny to get a peice of steel in your eyes ,you guys are young and will live forever,I'm not young and can sense my own motallity so i 'll have the usual ol' fart rant here... Over the years i have had untold amounts of curse word in my eyes and beleive me i am now paying for it as my eyesight is Shithouse. Arc flash exposure etc has meant that i can no longer see things under a car if the light is at all poor and i have to use a double halogen light set up. So think about wearing a good pair of safety glasses, the best you can afford with polycarbonate lenses that won't scratch and when you are the wrong side of 49 you will be able to drive your car (if we are still allowed them...) at night and not have to squint etc and wear dopey coke bottle glasses like some sort of geriatric harry potter. ...and get a bloody hair cut.... ;D ;D

Many years ago I changed my driving style to cope with rising fuel prices; I have now reached the stage where I am contemplating keeping my eyes shut in order to lower wind resistance.

Good work! I would NEVER have got as far as even the third pic, I'd just be sat there, staring at it wishing it would fix itself... I used to be like this, terrified of doing any major jobs for fear of arseing it up hard. These days I'm alot more confident in what I'm doing, and much more keen to get stuck in. And it's all thanks to RETRO-RIDES!!!

theres propper pukka peltor ear defenders and polycarbonate saftey glasses going on under all that hair it not looks like this- ive not had the hammer and dollies round it yet to get it straight, and there no filler on it, just a bit of rattle can to protect it. itll be black primer for a while to all repairs are done and the car is 100% straight- then I'm gunna cut it up again before i get round to painting it

i know someone would pick me up on that inner arch isnt finished- i tried starting it but figured i couldnt get it fitting right until the outer skin was on and in the right place to work to. all the curse word is cut out and the arch cleaned up, just gotts get inside the wheelarch to weld it in, thatll be fun!!

normally when confronted with something like that I would end up buying two arches and using one (invariably hacked about) to fix the inner and one to fix the outer. I hate doing wheelarches, it's a real ball-ache! give me a crusty outer sill any day!

ive actually got a repop innner arch, must be a common bit to go if they do em. as usual tho its not quite right, itll be going in in 3 sections to get it fitting spot-on. gotta get it fitted and then swop the front wing before the MOT, i don't think theyll appreciate it being held on with gaffer tape
