isn't it easier to find a matching gearbox? or park it up a hill and do a rolling start every time? ;-) haha, I considered this - but only one of the bellhousing bolts lines up. From all the pictures on ebay, the linkage system for the compatible gearbox is completely different to the lupo gear linkage, and I think the driveshaft flanges are different too. All in all, its a massive ballache

FIXED IT. Got (yet) another ebay engine. Had a run up over the M62 to pick it up from bolton, bloody lovely motorway that, Highest in the UK and has some really beautiful views - Glad my mate was driving.
Got it fitted much quicker than I anticipated, its in the car and running lovely. Feels good to get my own car back. It feels slower than it was, but I put this down to my borrowed motor being quite fast! That said, It's nice to have round tyres (the 106 had a good 2cm of ovalness in the front drivers side after I smashed it off around Blyton), dampers that work (again, the 106 front damper shafts fell down into the strut with a clunk they were so knackered) Comfy seats - Firing myself into a bucket seat and clipping harnesses drove me mad.
What makes me most upset is the thing I missed most - I've constructed a remote central locking device which winds my windows up on the Lupo when I lock it on the key fob. Every time I got out of the 106 I would take the key out, get out of the car then realise I needed to get back in, stick the key back in and wind the windows back up. I'd have been better off with keep fit windows.
I'm sure after a week I'd have got used to it, but it drove me crackers. I remember when I first got the Lupo and it felt so odd for a few days til I got used to power steering and no power.
I've just sourced yet another set of new wheels for it, hope to have them on for RRG if I'm allowed on a stand!

Well, yesterday didn't go so well! Nipped out to get some heatshrink for a loom I'm converting, and was coasting down a hill when everything went wobbly and I lost drive - managed to get it off the road onto the grass in the middle, and found that my passenger side driveshaft had fallen clean off the gearbox - the bolts had all come out (I can remember doing them "tight" but didn't want to go mad because my spline bit is made of chocolate, and they weren't that tight to start with) In coming off, it had flapped about and bent the ends of two bolts over, which needed sawing off, then I could use the other 4 bolts to get me the 2 miles home. I phoned the RAC, explained exactly this. An hour later a bloke turns up, decides it needs towing and it won't go on his dolly. I said if he let me use his tools I'd fix the thing myself, or at least just give me a shove off the central reservation. Anyway, he disappears and says a flatbed is on its way. About 15 minutes later he comes back and tells me that the RAC want £100 for a specialist tow because my vehicle is modified. Obviously I wasn't happy about this, so asked him again if he could just lop those 2 bolts off and give me a shove off the central reservation (into a side road 20 yards away) He said no. So basically my options were pay £100 for a 2 mile tow home, or leave the car stuck in the central reservation and walk home, then ride my bike back down with a hacksaw and fix the thing myself in the road. I didn't want to leave it as I'm sure the police would have towed it themselves and it would have cost me a lot more than that, so I was forced to cough up £100 and get it towed home, and I've got it all stripped, just waiting for some motivation to kick in and I'll ride up to VW (just round the corner) for the new bolts and get it all reattached. All in all, I couldn't be much less happy with the RAC, When I get less angry I'll write a proper letter off to them voicing my distaste, asking to cancel my cover and try and get my £100 back!

Thats sucks, give them a call and say you would like to leave because of this and that you wish to swap to the AA. You should never be charged to be towed, whats the point in having cover? I got my old BMW taken to the garage by a man with van and that only cost me £30 for 2 miles. Cool car by the way

I HATE THE RAC!!!!!! same thing happened to me a couple years ago. changed the engine in my mk1 astra in yorkshire and was on my way down to santa pod for performance vauxhall. turns out the alternator on the new engine is dead and driving on the motoray with no lights and no street lights is a bit sketchy lol Pulled over phoned rac, they came out, I explained I had the old alternator in the boot and asked if he could just swap it over for me? No, he cant replace bits that arent bought from him. ok, can I have a mk1 astra alternator please? no I don't have one in my van. no thought not. can I borrow your tools and change it myself? no, cant lend tools out. grrr flatbed came out to take me home (not an rac flatbed, local company) I asked if he had any tools, he did and I could borrow them so I swapped it over in the services and was on my way! Learnt 2 lessons that day: 1. the RAC are sh*t 2. ALWAYS carry tools with you!

The AA wont charge you for having a modified vehicle. I know Caddycol has had several of his cars recovered by the AA (mainly lowriders) and they've never even sniffed at them.

Lovely car that mate. Any chance of a 1680 by 1050 picture of it fraid not mate - don't own a camera good enough. Best I've got are in here: www.davidartschan.com/clpics/jan2009/Well, it gets worse with this thing! Woke up this morning unable to walk - if I go from laying down to standing up I go dizzy for 10 seconds and have to grab on to something or I'll collapse. Quite weird, I think it's cos I'm so congested due to hayfever which I've barely had til this year. Quite bad, but when you have to lay under a car smashing things with hammers it doesn't do you any favours! anyway. After doing some work, I walked to VW, bought some new bolts, then walked to the motor factors for threadlock and LM grease. Walked back and must have dropped the threadlock on the journey, then realised I have a big tub on LM grease in the garage. Bah. The driveshaft flapping about made a mess of the drive flange on the box - I tested it and the shaft wouldn't mate up properly, and was on a right squint. I took the flange off to clean the face up with the file, and found one of the taper bush inside to be broken into three pieces. Unlucky and lucky all at once I think. I've sourced a donor box (within 1 hour!) to swap the drive flange and bush over, which I'll do tomorrow. I've remembered how much I hate the smell of gearbox oil now. Horrible stuff -and all over the drive too. I'm going to get a right roasting for it and feel really bad, really tried my best to stop it - Massive polythene sheet with a 5 foot square of MDF on top, then drained it all into a tub. I wandered off, the flow slowed down and the wind blew it all over the place. Tried to clean it off with loads of washing up liquid, water and a wire brush, but it;s left huge marks where all the water dried I really hope this thing doesn't cost me any more money - I was skint with buying two engines, and then a nice set of wheels came up (Image splits) which I paid for 1 hour before the bloody car expired on me, stretched myself to the limit. I know I should plan finances better, but as someone once said "I spend 90% of my money on cars, girls and booze. the rest I waste" I'm banking on a few wiring jobs paying off to keep me afloat (If you need any custom electrickery doing get in touch - custom instrumentation, engine conversion looms etc get in touch!) but I should survive if nothing ELSE unexpected comes up, or I'll have to start selling things. I think being terminally broke is part of the hobby though.

I've been buying things I shouldn't have. I passed my exams and uni, so now I have a degree (2:1 in bEng Automotive Electronic Engineering) and I deserve a present to myself. They need splitting to change the rear dishes (I think) so I might paint them. Any ideas?

wow, they are COOOOLLLL!!! I think they look good as they are, but if you were to paint them, I would paint the inserts either gloss black or the same green as the car and keep the rims polished. Wicked little car.

Wicked little car. Cheers mate They need some work to get them on - Bolt holes enlarging, spacers on the front to clear caliper, and the dishes swapping about with smaller outers on the rear to turn them from 7.5s and 10s to 8s and 9s methinks. I was thinking similar colour wise, Or perhaps cream? When I sold my old Castallettes, I painted them cream for the buyer and tried one on the car, and they looked beautiful: But then again the same metalflake black as I've done the grille and badges in would also look nice. hmmm. Skint at moment though, but hoping to get them on for RRG

You can have the job of sorting the electrics in my Capri if you want.
You're going to have to pay for the flights yourself though.

I mixed some paint up at work (50% Lada Biege, 50% PM01 Green pearl) for the centres, and gave one of the wheels a going over. Also gave the dish 10 minutes with the Autosol. Turned out OK: Apologies for the curse word poor iPhone pics! The green pearl hasn't really come through as much as I wanted, but its a nice subtle tint when the sun hits it. A few coats of lacquer should bring it out a little more. I've got 1/4 a can of green which I'll try out on one of the others later on today, and some anthracite. See which I prefer!

I'm a poor man, and had to sell the wheels due to MOT issues - needed a full exhaust including cat, the old engine had killed the cat with smoking, and the rest of the system was porous and falling to bits. something I'd been putting off for ages. On the plus side, the wheels paid for a silly exhaust:
