Wrote to PPC to ask about LT28 box ratios a lil while back as I want an audi straight 5 in it instead. If the purists hate ian elliot's (blue) car they'll want me shot Ah well

no, you are not mad, everyone on here is sane ;D A lot of the body panels can still be purchased from the BMW dealers (though i am not sure about the touring specific parts); a touring is very rare and i'd restore it... the blue one is also a very inspiring car ...

Not to downhearten you, but that shell *looks* in the pictures like it needs alot more work that just a few panels! Be wary!

I hate to be negative but I'd say unless he is literally giving it away I'd walk. The front clip looks shot and as for doors... well, skins are available but a proper pita the weld correctly and hanging the buggers itself is a days job! If the panels need that much work you can pretty much be sure that you will need to do the sills and inner wings etc. It gets mighty expensive. Also if it has stood for 11 years (looking at the tax) it will need the brakes rebuilding and the engine will need a lot of tlc to sort. If you can, have a look about (maybe on bmw2002.co.uk) and see what's in budget. If I had to do it all again I would spend more than the £400 mine cost me on a better car and then yog the other cash I have on mods instead of filler and panels. I'm only just getting to the stage where the car can actually be modded safely - to date repairs have been the priority! Having said that, if the price is VERY low and you want to just learn to weld, ignore me. Getting them up to "show Queen" standards is a proper mission though. Jesus... I am a moany b'stard arent I! Ok, so this isn't the smae car as that which started this thread; it's actually my second 02 (the one above was beyond saving). It's a racing car to cut a long story short and I wanted to get the thread resurrected, as this will be seeing regular updates. She's a tad rusty on the underbelly so the only thing for her was to roll her over....which is exactly what we did: FG door off and out the way: Roll over you schlaaaaaaag: Much more efficient use of a 9x16x10 bay when she's on her side! Next job (in a week's time) is to get grinding/cutting ready for the weldathon ;D PS - this is what she used to look like 10+ years ago:

oli - yes, and even have the moulds for all wings and splitter which is pretty sweet. There's a race tank in the back that I didn't realise hadn't been removed plus a nice dinky ali catch tank that got thrown in the car, too. 427 - here's a picture of the worst of the sills on this[/] one so you should be able to appreciate how wibblepoo the last one was to force me to have it crushed (after salvaging some parts):

Managed a couple of hours yesterday and a couple of hours today cutting and grinding away at the near side front corner and, I have to say, it's worse than a patchwork quilt! Whomever has been tasked with repairing it in the past obviously hasn't hear of butt welding and so it's just overlap after overlap etc. Anyway, I think I can now move rearwards..... Would people normally weld an area at a time or just keep going on the whole side? I was thinking keep going with the grinder along the whole side as it may impact on my repair options: I was thinking of (trying to) weld in a length of box section where the sill used to be and then join that to the floorpan with some sheet - do people think that's a good idea? Or would you be trying to use pattern parts? I have not idea if the cost of the latter would be daft/prohibitive but I thought the previosu suggestion would be fairly straight forward... Thanks in advance for any suggestions, Matt

So Russ dropped in on thursday night and instantly broke out the mig. I'd been shopping and netted two 2m lengths of box section for about £16, plus some sheet steel that would prove rather necessary. The aim before going home (to the pub) was to get the box cut to the right length and tacked in place ready for friday's weldathon: We got started about 10:30 and before long realised we didn't have a few bits n bobs, so I went out on errands. When I came back I found that rather than gravitate toward the nearest pie outlet Russ had just been soldiering on like a good-un, with some hefty patchwork: Soon it really was time for lunch, although that didn't stop Mr C. Can you spot the difference in the following pics? Not the usual post-prandial activity for pieminister's most wanted, but nevertheless the penetrator lived up to his name: Much as he protested the only way into the car was to crawl head-first through the back of the cage. I've yet to fully investigate how much spatter's on the windscreen but for now it's staying put. I cut out some subframe mount supports from the remaining box section which Russ then welded in: FInal welds of the day were capping off the sills and aforementioned support. Gratuitous beemers included: All in all a good day-and-a-bit's progress - massive thanks to russ for making the effort to come and help.

Went to the ELC today. My first weld: Had a bash at finishing the front end of the left side with some help from a lad at work: Turned out alright I think, and an ambition I've had for the last few years fulfilld - yay Paint on that side next me thinks
