good project.. try to source a rear beam from a mk2 GT model, they're fitted with a stabiliser.. also use the front struts and trailing arms from a later model as they are a bit stiffer.. handling will improve a lot when you combine these with lowering.. I was going to use a gt beam (with the stabiliser) but had one fitted to a ranger I had. didnt realy feel any different and weighed a fair bit more so leaving that out... the front struts are staying mk1 as they are identical to mk2 items except the topcaps (which are no changed for mk3 items in order to accept lowering springs) I'm going to fit g lader blocks to the antirollbar. but may have to slice them to prevent damaging the track control arms or antirollbar when its lowered.....

Thought it was time i dragged this up from the depths with a bit of an update.... its been slowly taking shape , ive been awkward and refrained from using mk2 struts therefore leaving it harder to find some parts... I.e some mk2 caps and early tca's which a nice guy on mk1poloclub sold me The updates (there will be a few pics as the week progresses) *painted and fitted rear beam with new pivot bushes (vw part) *fitted mk2 rear brake backing plates meaning i can use later and more available cyls and shoes *fitted lowered springs and sports shocks to the rear *built one strut up and managed to fit a mk2 topmount bush *building the other and painting it today so should be finished tommorow *painting new tca's and antiroll bar although ill need to find a mk2 or 3 5 speed one soon.... For those of you that don't know this is what i started with:Which soon turned into this after one week it then ended up in the garage on standswhere some welding slowly took place and the front is now nearly finished..it now looks like this

Great project, I'll be watching this closely.
Every time I see one of these Polo's it reminds me of a trip to Simpsons salvage about 15 years ago, there was a mint orange one going for £40, it had something stupid like 35K miles on the clock, I was all over it (to the great amusement of my mate) and it was perfect, no rust anywhere at all, my buddy just looked at me blankly as I enthused about it's perfect condition.
It still pains me that I didn't buy it.

Considering yesterday it only had one front strut and even that wasnt bolted on, i think todays work speaks for itself don't worry, its going back up on weds to fit 18quids worth of bolts from volkswagen for the front and rear susp.... (to make it right) and then I'm budging it over and cutting the sills out

Right , ive had a good day. finished the inner and started fitting the outer sill.... ive decided also that I'm not going to update this thread until its nearer completion, as there just doesnt seem to be much love for it realy..... sorry for those of you that are interested , but lack of a decent amount of comments puts me in a kinda CBA mood realy..

To be fair, theyve made a good job of fabricating those patches before rivetting them on. I would have been tempted to keep the theme of "bodge repair" up and filled the sill with expanding builders foam!

I think you worry to much, Most people read the threads but just don't post comments, I read them all with interest but don't comment as I don't have anything that constructive to say. Why not instead of a daily update what about a fortnightly one, People will be able to see the progress being made much better then mate and might feel more keen to leave comments and praise! ;D Good luck BTW, She'll be a right beauty when all done!

i'm feeling the love for mk1 polo's a really clean shape that looks great 30 years on ,,,if your chopping away the sills though,,,,you need to avoid torsional forces on the body by jacking it up halfway between the front wheels, rather than offset to one side,,,,when i did my sills,i had to realign the A pillars after i'd jacked it up on one corner with no sills fitted,,as the front doors stopped closing properly (i jacked it on the other side to compensate,,,then supported it in the center of the front axle)

I love mk1 Polos, as with another reader above, I read posts all the time, but don't have much constructive to say usually, so tend to not bother! Thought I'd reply on this one, great to see another mk1 being saved. Will be worth it in the end.
