I think it's also a question of weight. I've run 185/70's on 7" rims on the back of a Minor with no problems, but Minor's are light on the back end. Some of the Cal-Look VW boys run 135's on 5.5" rims of the front of a Beetle, but beetle's are light at the front. I actually asked a tyre fitter about stretching tyres, and he said the optimum is tyre section of 1-2" more than rim width, but 185's on 7" rims are OK. Also, some tyres (e.g. Michelin's) have a more pliable sidewall, so can be stretched with less problems than others with stiffer sidewalls.

That's insane! 155/80s are stretched enough on 5.5x13s

I'd call rather than email...
Unfortunately, emails tend to be 'forgot' by a lot of companies.

It is funny that this has popped up , I emailed someone I know who works for a motorsport division of a major tyre maufacturer and he replied last night. he said " Oh my god are people really doing that are they F***ING mad ........ but it does look cool " he then went on to say " I will show them to the R&D people and see what they say , but I would think that they will say the same thing sidewalls are not designed to take that sort of stress and as for the bead actually staying in place , I dread to think of the consequences of it detaching even in a straight line , an insurance comapny would have a field day on construction and use regs alone." So looks cool BUT ........................................ The choice is yours
