Out of curiosity has anyone ever swapped out an engine from a car thats of less capacity than the original engine? you know moved from a larger old tech engine to a slightly smaller but much better designed and with more tuning options? i have urge to at some point get rid of the iron block 2.5 straight 6 and move to a nice modern twincam 4cyl engine. is this an inherently stupid idea? ;D

Yup! Changed my kit-car's 1300cc x-flow for a 909cc honda in-line 4! Didn't notice much loss in performance... BB PS The 909cc engine was from a fireblade ;D

why not just swap it for a Nissan iron block 2.5 straight six.. with a huffer on the side? ;D RB25DET, better again, RB26DETT? mind you, if you want 4cyl, SR20DET should adequately kick some ass.

yeh I'm more a fan of naturally aspirated performance, and cutting back weight aswell.
but the sr20det has tempted me. since it seems like an engine that performs well above what it was designed to do.
a friend of mine has a rb20det and is putting a gtr crank in....RB24det...that would be interesting.
but i was thinkin more along the lines of 2.0 vauxhall xe or 2.0 duratec or if i had plentiful cash 2.3 duratec.

hows about a cheap as chips motor from the 2.3 or 2.9 Scorpio, or a 2.0 zetec from a mundano or escroat?

ive done both with the firenza first it was an 1800 82bhp then 2300 107bhp know 2000 with 180bhp without the turbo boost wound upwell worth the hassle off swapping, fast reliable and economical what more do you want?

i thought about the zetec, but if i was going for one of the ironblock 4cyls i think it would be the vauxhall XE. ideally i love the idea of a duratec since that would save about 80kgs up front. but still a XE is cheaper and only i think 20kg heavier than the duratec.
just love the idea of throttle bodies, less weight up front and a "proper" engine.

I can't beleive you want to put less cylinders in it.... Smaller capacity is just about OK if it produces more power. But less cylinders.... What about a BMW straight 6.......

Less cylinders = lighter ? "simplicate and add lightness" as a wiseman once said

But what about the sound... I'm all for more power (I wouldn't be here otherwise..) and lightness (we could all lose a pound or two) but It's got to sound right as well. What about a modern V6?

Alfa 4 cylinder boxer engine has one of the nicest noises of any engine ,.. but your right, I was just splitting hairs ,.. If you've got room for a 6,.. then V6,..

certainly is! 930cc up to 1300cc. And once turbocharged, about 40 times more powerful!
I love sticking hairdryers to things, turbo turbo turbo!

a bmw m3 3.0 straight 6 would be a good chopice my friend over at zoom motorsport specialises in that but.
what people seem to be missing here is, yes power is good but straight 6 bmw's (e30's for definate) arent exactly the masters of turn in, and you can definately feel the weight. sure straight 6 sounds nice its one of my favourite sounds in the world, but id trade that off for a 4cylinder with ITB's that handles better.
definately adding lightness.

remeber RPM that came out before PPC....remeber the article on the zetec in that.. someone had fitted one to a lamborghini urracco after the original V8 broke.....interesting but not as interesting as the guy who fitted a ford transit diesel into his daimler.
