Just reading classic american (pretty dull mag but I need something to read in my sick bed!). A guy is planning a 'jaguar XK120, complete with roof chop, Fifties hemi engine, barrel organ pipes and genuine knobbly ostrich skin interior' I'm all for unusual engine swaps but why bother with a Jag? Surely you can get enough power out of a jag engine. The roof chop should look awesome but make it pretty hard to see out of. From the pics and write up of his completed project one thing is certain, the workmanship will be amazing.

I can understand the reasoning behind putting a lighter engine in your BMW as they are pretty heavy but I wouldnt use a zetec or XE unless you were going to fit carbs or throttle bodies otherwise what you would gain in handling you would lose in performance. I have seen a few m3 (6 cylinder) engines on ebay for £750-1000 do you not fancy one of those ;D

m3 engines add another 20killos up front. and you seen how much the parts are for them. my friend fitted a 3.0 m3 engine to his his satin black e36 (if your familiar with drifting mr phoenixC I'm talkin about bon bon who used to rag the curse word e28 about) it cost hiom £1k for a supposedly good engine......got it fitted at zoom motorsport.....engine blew up a couple of weeks later. got another bottom end. that blew up. then he redid the shells in a gamble hoping to get it working again. seized again a day later. ovalled rods by the looks of it. and to rebuild its £900 for rods.
i don't like expensive top of the line stuff its hard to replace when you break it. at least with a XE, zetec or Duratec if i blew one up i could just get another one cheaply enough.
this is my thinking to, plus I'm a fan of revvier engines not much into havin bucketloads of low down torque. i like driving cars where you have to rev them. ideally i'd love an e30 m3 too pricey for me. or just the e30 m3 engine... too much work to get it fitting easy in a RHD car.

Xk120 was available as a fixed head coupe as well as drop head. Looks pretty good as it is to me.

can you not find a cheap iS engine, or even a cheap iS (good luck! - prices have gone bananas in the last 12 months).
Then slap one of these Mini superchargers on it. I'm liking the idea myself. Not too sure how to do it yet though.....

yeh man, tell me about it. i really fancied a is but the prices are definately on the rise, much more than i could afford. havent seen any IS engines up for sale and have no clue what price they go. that plan would make much more sense since its bmw and will fit. but i need a backup plan to.

What about an IS engine from an E36. I take it they are pretty much the same. There have been a few going through the salvage yards round here lately for around £200 all with back end bumps and bent rear suspension ;D.
Although like you said at the beginning of the thread you might be better of with a J turbo engine.

early e36 engines are the same. Later ones (post 94?) are not quite the same animal....

I think if you are gonna do an engine swap in your Beemer, something like a Perkins 4108 diesel would be a good practical choice. Just rob one from a nearby houseboat.

yeh ive thought about sticking V8 power in....but I'm not normally a fan of that, and I'm not looking for monster power, i really want screamy 4 pot power not looking for something thats going to be a straightline missile. somethin that goes a bit, but goes round bends much better than how the car currently does...obviously at some point the horrible issue of having to work out what route is going to rape my wallet the least is going to have to be brought up
